Chapter 11 - Dark Horse

Haha, I laughed as I shot a fireball at corrupted soul beasts running away.

"Why are you running?" I taunted as I activated my wind steps, "what happened to the majestic aura you were displaying back then?"

~Thud~ the corrupted soul beasts body fell as I pierced it heart with my dagger.

"Seems like my hard work didn't go to waste," I smiled as I glanced at my system screen.

For the past three months, I decided to hunt soul beasts for energy points and even though I couldn't sell the soul shards, I still didn't worry.

The soul shards could be converted to EXP, and the system still awarded me with system points and EXP for killing soul beasts so all in all, it was a win-win situation for me.

"Ah, I just need more time and I'll break through to the Expert stage," I muttered.

Initially I was attending all the classes but, after attending all those classes, I realized that most of the thing the teachers taught us wasn't going to really help me because of my system.

So instead of going to those classes, I used my energy points to get a basic attack ability and a movement type ability then, I joined the academy mission guild and got energy points from them by completing tasks and missions.

The mission guild is currently the most popular guild in both the main and outer academy, they assign quests to their members based on their capabilities and as for those who completes their missions, they get rewarded with energy points and improve their reputation within the guild while those who fail to complete their mission were going to be recommended less but, were still able to take up new tasks or missions.

"I better return as soon as possible, I still need to register for the annual competition," I muttered as I packed the body of the corrupted soul beast into my storage ring.

...

"Ah, Kai it's you. It has been a while since we last met," Melia said with a smile "or are you here to request for a new mission or update your current mission status."

Although I didn't really make friends or interact with a lot of people, Melia was one of the few exceptions. Or maybe it was because we had completed one or two missions together.

"I'm here to update my mission status," I replied as I placed the storage ring containing the corrupted soul beast on her desk.

"What's this for?" She asked with a confused look as she pointed at the storage ring I placed on her desk.

"It contains the body of the corrupted soul beast requested on my mission," I answered, "but why would anyone want the body of a soul beast? It's not like it can be used for anything."

"Seems like you cultivation dudes have no basic knowledge. The soul beast bodies are used to forge weapons and their strength varies depending on the materials used," she said, "the higher the rank of the soul beast, the better the quality of the weapons and if they are imbued with a soul beast soul core then their power would simply skyrocket."

"Anyway, I've updated your mission status so would you like to get a new one?"

"I don't think that would be necessary for now, I plan to participate in the annual competition between the main and outer academy," I said.

"That's really awesome, I wanted to also participate in the competition as well but, I'm still a Beginner stage cultivator so there's no way I can get a spot among the top 20," she said looking a bit downcast.

Although I wanted to cheer her up and help her, I didn't really think it would make a difference.

"Don't worry about it, you can just participate next year I'm sure you would have improved a lot by then," I said, "also, how many energy points did I get for completing the mission?"

"You have received a total of 205 points, the points allocated for this mission is 250 points, but the guild as deducted 45 energy points as their commission."

"Alright then, I'll be taking my leave," I said.

"Ok, goodbye."

...

"I'm here to register for the academy annual tournament," I said to the lady at the desk.

"Your name and class?"

"Kai Everette, I'm in Advance stage cultivators' class: outer academy," I replied.

"Wait, weren't you a mid-level Advance stage cultivator two months ago? How did you suddenly become a peak advance stage cultivator?" She asked as she failed to hide the surprise in her voice.

"I just got lucky," I said with a smile.

"Alright kid, here's your participation id make sure you keep it well or your spot will be given to someone else."

"Thank you," I replied before taking my leave.

"It seems we might have another dark horse this year, I'll be looking forward to your fights kid, you better not disappoint me."
