Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 : The Beginning of A Journey

Life is pretty amazing. Being raised by a single father, this wasn't my thoughts about life in my childhood. It's always pained me when I saw others kid hanging out with their both parents. In addition to that, my father had amnesia, for which he doesn't even remember things happened before my birth. He doesn't even remember my mother, so I was raised without even had a single memory of my mother.

Though my father was very caring towards me despite being an amnesia patient. That's wasn't enough to make me cheerful about life in my childhood. I was always gloomy and liked to be isolated from other kids, for a simple reason that I was jealous.

During these times, I used to spent my times in the basement when my father was out for his work. When I entered there for the first time, I saw a mess of various books. There were many fantasy story books about ancient kings, wars, monsters and magics. Those were the only source of my enjoyment. The thing that always got my attention was the term magic.

As time passed, I became more addicted to those books. And I almost finished every book there in about 5 months. All the story has one thing in common, there was always a war, where it said that the last man standing got an ultimate wish turned into reality. But in the end none of them had won it for some reason. Another thing that got my attention was this war had happened once in every 200 years, which was kinda weird to me. Afterall, this war was called " The war of Heaven and Earth."

I often searched the term in internet but there was no information regarding this. So I begun to think it as fantasy, even though as a child I still wanted to believe that magic really does exist.

One day, I decided to clean the basement as I never really cleaned the mess during those five months. While fixing the books I had read already into the bookshelf, I noticed a unique box was kept hidden under the mess of all the books. It was made of an heavy metal which I didn't know and it has a shape like a Buddhist shrine. Fortunately for me, the box was unlocked. With curiosity, I buried my worries and slowly open the box. To my utter disappointment, there was only 3 cards in the box, nothing else. Though, I picked them up. But I saw there was signs of something else which was taken away from the box.

As I begun to connect the dots, I realized something. There must be robbery in this basement and someone must have stolen something from this box and books from the shelves. That was the first time in these time I felt feared. I observed my surroundings carefully, but there was no way a robber can secretly enter the basement as it has only one entrance, the staircase door.

I became very nervous there and was panicking thinking about that the basement was haunted. Suddenly I heard a sound of something falling. "Thud... "

I screamed loudly as I tried to run in panic, but stripped over the mess of the books and was about to fall on my head, but quickly tried to blocked that with my hands. The moment I was about to push my hand against the floor, one of the card that remained in my left hand begun to shine. The next thing I knew was that, I was floating at the height of those shelves. Within a second, I realized I was falling again, but this time, I was able to land on the floor on my feet , but with a huge impact, that made the floor shuddered as well as the books near that flew far away.

I was heavily breathing and thinking what was happening. But I was glad that I wasn't harmed. I begun to feel some extra power within me, as if my movements were getting boosted. I noticed the other two cards that was fall from my hands during my fall was unscathed. I was shocked at the durability of these cards.

Suddenly my hand begun to shine again like the time I was about to fall. But this time I noticed that the third card that was vanished, reappeared in my hand.

I looked at it in wonder.

"What just … happened here?" I begun to wondered.

But as soon as the card reappeared, I begun to feel tired. The extra power I was feeling was completely gone and it became so hard for me to even breath. It was as if my heart will shrink in to nothing. But I barely was holding myself on my knees and trying to catch some breath. After few minutes of struggle I managed to hold my self towards normal, but I was sure that the abnormal power I was granted before have to do something with those cards.

I then had a good look on the card in my hand. It was thin, but was very durable and was brown in color. I couldn't find out the material it was made of, but I was pretty sure, it wasn't any random earth thing. I got into my body when it suddenly shine like a light.

I noticed there was something on the card. A sign that I remembered from the books I had read in the past 5 months was on that card. There was also something written on the top of the card.

"Enhancement : HP 5%"

As a kid of six, I wasn't supposed to understand that. But due to being a book nerd for months, I realized that this card had boosted my physical attributes by 5%. At first it was like a dream to me. But it was reality. These cards really contains magic powers like in some of the books I had read.

In shock, I checked the other cards. Those cards also had the same design as the one I used before, but the words were different on the top. one had "Stealth skill : 10%" and the other one had "Speed up: HP 5%"

Those cards were full of surprise to me. But I didn't try them that day, afterall, I had got a clear idea how exhausting using them would be. Though that was the day I took over those cards and begun to feel like I was special.

Since that day, I begun to do research in the basement to find more about those cards, though there wasn't any books which may describe these cards. So I try to learn about them as much I can from the history books, which I thought was fluke fantasy books in my childhood. throughout a few years, I realized that I had to build my body in order to handle the power of these cards.

But I also found out that these cards are made of mana, a magical particles which combined to create magic and for a non mage person, these cards were useless. But I could use them. So I was sure that I was a mage, even though my father is completely manaless. As for my mother, I don't know who she was. But I had a hunch that she was the reason I had mana circulation in my body.

Ever since then to now, I had trained myself to get used to those cards. As my body got compatible with those cards, I gained more confidence. My jealousy towards other kids also calm down. It turned into a feeling of superiority over them as I am a mage, but they weren't. Though when I told my father about my ability, he warned me not to get mixed in the world of magus. I wondered why though, after all little did I knew that time, that he was a pretty smart liar.

As I become a second year high schooler, I was already a perfect student in my high school with these magic skills in my arsenal. Though I don't know anything about the world of mages, I am confident enough to face them any time. All I have to do now is to wait, wait for the time that will reveal me to the world of mages. And only then, the story of mine, Kirei Reiss's journey as a mage will finally start.
