Chapter 15: Shadows of Allegiance

In the dimly lit chambers of the clandestine lair of Regon's followers, a palpable tension hung in the air. The failed assassination attempt still echoed through their minds. The High Priest, a figure draped in dark robes, stood at the head of the room, his stern countenance betraying no emotion.

"My brethren," he began, his voice echoing through the chamber, "our Lord Regon has granted us forgiveness for our failure in carrying out the assassination. However, our debt to him remains unpaid. We must offer him 20 young souls as sacrifices."

Murmurs of concern and apprehension rippled through the assembly. The followers knew this would be no easy task, for abducting 20 young ones would bring unwanted attention and perilous consequences. Yet, they were bound by their allegiance and fear of the wrath of Regon.

Meanwhile, in a chariot bound for the Church of Regon, Emily's mother, Mrs. Thompson, voiced her discontent. "James, you need to do something about that wretched wine shop! It's an eyesore and a thorn in our side. We can't let it stand any longer."

James, her husband and a council member, sighed. "Honey, it's not that simple. The wine shop is under the protection of Mr. Lu. He's part of the council, and we can't just act against his interests without repercussions."

Mrs. Thompson huffed, "Repercussions? What about our family's standing in this city? We are much more important than that old shop and the old man who runs it."

James shook his head, "It's not about being important. It's about maintaining peace and order in the city. Let it be, and stop being so foolish. Mr. Lu has his reasons for supporting the wine shop."

At the city gates, the air was charged with anticipation as Old Lark awaited the arrival of the wine supply for the upcoming Midnight Gala. The gates were guarded by the formidable City Guards, an elite force trained to protect the city and its interests. They were a well-organized group, each member skilled in various disciplines, from the might of the knights to the precision of the sharpshooters and the arcane powers of mages.

As the supply convoy approached, a familiar face emerged from the ranks of the City Guards. It was the Head of the City Guards, a grown man who had once served under Old Lark's command during their days in the battalion.

The man saluted Old Lark, a grin on his face. "Old Lark, it's been too long! I'm now the Head of the City Guards, but seeing you, I'm reminded of our time in the battalion."

Old Lark smiled, reciprocating the salute. "Indeed, it has been a while. Congratulations on your new position. I'm proud to see how far you've come."

The Head of the City Guards turned to the junior officers beside him and scolded, "Salute! Show respect to this great man!"

The junior officers quickly saluted, their faces red with embarrassment. Old Lark chuckled, "No need for formalities. Carry on, and if you have the time later, you can find me at Glimmering Brews. Secretly, of course."

As the supply was unloaded and the convoy moved inside the city, Old Lark couldn't help but ponder the delicate balance of power in Lunar City, with the Regans and the City Guards playing significant roles. He knew that in the shadows of this bustling city, ancient rivalries and secrets still simmered, waiting for the opportune moment to reveal themselves. In the heart of Lunar City, the Church of Regon stood tall and imposing, a structure crafted from dark stone, its architecture invoking an air of mystery and malevolence. The council members, including Mr. Lu and Emily's parents, arrived for a meeting.Within the depths of the church, the High Priest revealed his plans for the sacrifices. The council members exchanged uneasy glances, their thoughts conflicted between their allegiance to Regon and their moral compass.Yet, they knew that in this intricate dance of power, they had little choice but to obey. The fate of Lunar City and its inhabitants hung in a delicate balance, and the shadows of allegiance threatened to engulf them all.In the depths of the Church of Regon, shadows danced across the cold stone walls, and flickering torchlight created an eerie ambiance. The High Priest continued, his voice echoing in the dim chamber, "Our master's will must be done, without hesitation. The sacrifice must occur at midnight on the night of the eclipse, three moons from now."

Council members, including Mr. Lu and Emily's parents, listened attentively, their faces taut with the gravity of the situation. Their conflicting emotions gnawed at them, but years of devotion to Regon suppressed any outward signs of dissent.

Emily's mother, Mrs. Thompson, struggled to reconcile her conscience with the demands of her allegiance. The thought of sacrificing innocent lives weighed heavily on her heart, but she knew defiance could have dire consequences for her family.

In the bustling heart of Lunar City, the streets were alive with activity as the day unfurled into the late afternoon. Merchants peddled their wares, entertainers mesmerized the crowds, and a sense of celebration wafted through the air. The Moonlight Gala was just days away, and the city was alive with preparations.

At Glimmering Brews, Hendrix played with Snow while Old Lark attended to customers. The news of the failed assassination attempt had reached their ears, leaving Old Lark with a nagging sense of unease. He knew that the shadows of the past were inching closer, threatening the tranquility he had found in Lunar City.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of crimson and gold, Old Lark stood outside the wine store, watching the last rays of light vanish. A soft breeze ruffled his graying hair, and he contemplated the turn of events in recent days.

A familiar figure approached from the shadows, the Head of the City Guards. He spoke in a hushed tone, "Old Lark, it's good to see you again. I've been keeping an eye on Lunar City, and I'm aware of the tension brewing."

Old Lark nodded, acknowledging the unspoken complexities. "The balance of power in this city has always been delicate. We must be cautious."

The City Guard continued, "I remember our days in the battalion, the battles we fought, the camaraderie we shared. I owe you a great deal, and if you ever need my help, know that I'm here."

"I appreciate that," Old Lark replied, grateful for the gesture. "Keep watch, my friend. The shadows may be hiding more than we can imagine."

With a solemn nod, the City Guard melted back into the shadows, leaving Old Lark lost in thought. The memories of the war, the alliances forged, and the enmities buried, all seemed to converge in this city once more.

In the heart of Lunar City, the council members left the Church of Regon, their faces masked in a facade of obedience. Emily's mother, Mrs. Thompson, clutched her husband's arm, her eyes troubled. "James, we cannot let this happen. Innocent lives should not be sacrificed for such dark purposes."

James glanced around, ensuring they were not being observed, and whispered, "I agree, my dear. But we are in too deep. Regon's followers are powerful and ruthless. We must tread carefully, find a way to thwart their plans without jeopardizing our family."

With a determined resolve, they ventured into the night, aware that their allegiance to Regon had plunged them into a perilous game, one where the stakes were higher than they could have ever imagined.
