Chapter 1
KAYLA'S POV
I walked into the cafè, the cold coming from the air conditioner, hit my bare
skin making me shiver.
The popular café in town was filled to the brim with people as usual. There was never a time the cafe was found empty.
My eyes scanned the place, finally landing on my boyfriend, Austin. He was on his phone typing away with a cup of coffee on his table.
I walked to him, pulled out a chair and sat down. He looked up, his gray eyes landing on me, a smile found its way to his lips.
"Hey baby," he smiled, taking my hands into his.
I blushed shyly. "Hey."
He looked stunned for a while, his eyes never left my face. "You look beautiful today. What's the secret?" He teased me. He brought his face closer and placed a kiss on my lips that was covered in lip gloss.
"No secret, I'm just happy seeing you." I said and he smiled.
"Coffee?" I nodded . He called the attention of a waitress that passed by. She walked up to our table, a tray placed under her armpit, and a tiny book in her hand.
She flashed Austin a smile, earning an eye roll from me. "What would you love to have?" She asked in a seductive voice. She was not facing me, but Austin who had an amused smile on his face. I scrunch my nose up at her.
"I'd love a cup of iced coffee." I shot her a smile of satisfaction. She snorted and walked away.
Austin breaks into a laugh. I shrugged, completely ignoring him. My coffee arrived shortly and I took a big sip from it.
"You said you wanted to see me." I said facing him. He had called me when I was helping my mum at the little bakery. Since I am jobless, and have nothing to do, I helped her out at the bakery.
He shrugged. "I missed you."
"Are you for real? I was busy when you called." I frowned at him, clearly annoyed.
I slapped his hands off me when he tried to reach out to me.
"Come on baby doll, did you not miss me?"
"I do". He pouted, making me giggle.
I haven't gotten over the fact that he is my boyfriend. Everyday he made me feel excited, causing a warm feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I never wanted that feeling to stop.
A sigh escaped my lips, I relaxed on the chair, closing my eyes. I felt Austin's hand on my lap, causing me to have a tingling feeling.
"What's wrong baby doll?" He asked
I exhaled and snapped my eyes open. "My job search has been a waste of time. I want to support my mum and send my brother to college."
"Is it possible I can help?" I shook my head in disagreement. He always wanted to help, but always got the no from me. I wanted to be an independent lady, not the type that depended on her boyfriend at every little problem that occurs.
"You cannot always help every time."
"I could." I laughed.
Speak of a caring boyfriend.
He sat down properly on his chair, and took a sip from his black coffee. "I may have talked to my cousin about you."
My ear perked up immediately. Austin's cousin is one of the richest businessmen in New York City and getting a job with him was a win win for me. I only heard of him, but haven't met him before.
Tears welled up in my eyes immediately. I stood up from my chair and pulled Austin into a tight hug. I ignored the stares people threw at us.
"Thank you so much Austin."
He laughed it off with a wave and a smug smile on his lips. "You still have to be interviewed."
"I'll work on it." I said excitedly. I returned back to my seat, smiling. "Thank you, this means a lot to me."
"Seeing you happy is all I want. I'm happy I'm the reason you're happy."
"I love you." I meant with all my heart. I loved Austin so much.
"I love you too, baby doll."
•'•'•
I shrieked the moment I entered the house. I was still overjoyed after Austin broke the news to me.
It is great news for my family, except I will have to move to New York City. My mum always loved having me around because of her bakery.
My brother Liam was on the floor of our living room, his eyes fixated on the television watching his favorite show. He snapped his head towards me, shooting me a glare. I ran to him, a squeal escaped my mouth.
"Woah. Woah. Girl, what's the issue?" He asked in a rather irritating voice. He wasn't used to me being the noise maker.
I rolled my eyes at him. "Stop being an ass and let me share the goodness boy." I slapped his arm and he winced in pain. "Will you listen to me now?"
He scoffed, rubbing his arm. "It's not like I have a choice."
A satisfactory smile appeared on my face. I settled down beside him, snatching the remote and pausing the movie. "I have really great news." I announced excitedly.
"Get it over with already." Liam said grumpily.
"I got a job."
He snapped his half closed eyes open in shock. His eyes landed on me, a smile tugging at his lips.
"You're joking right?" He hit me playfully. I giggled and shook my head sideways.
"I haven't gotten it yet. Austin talked to his cousin."
Liam placed his fingers on my mouth, shutting me up. "When you mean his cousin, you mean his billionaire cousin?" He asked and I nodded in affirmation.
His face turned into a frown immediately. "Isn't that like in New York? Tell me you ain't going there."
I sighed heavily. This is the touchy part I never wanted to go to. My family and I are glued together, never apart, ever.
Leaving will be hard but I have to leave for us.
"I have to, this is our only chance. You have to go to college and mum need to expand her bakery. We need to leave this place to a more comfortable place."
I turned to Liam, a sad look clouded his cute face. I felt bad too but I never show it. For the record, I always known to be the strong one.
"You'll have to tell mum about it first. When is the interview?"
"I don't know, I'll have to ask Austin." He nodded , shifting his attention back to the television.
I walked to my room, plopping myself down on my bed. A heavy frustrated sigh escaped my lips.
My phone rang, distracting my thoughts. I reached for it, and placed it on my left ear without looking at the caller ID.
"Baby doll, are you home yet?" He asked. I muttered a yes to him. "Tired from the small walk already?" He chuckled.
"No. My brother isn't happy about me doing the job." I said , after a few seconds of silence.
"It's for your own good baby doll. I'm hurt too, but I can't let you suffer, especially when you wouldn't let me help you with money."
I nodded in agreement. My family will have to let me go. We will all benefit from it.
The news was a good and bad one for mum. She tried to eat her dinner happily, but failed.
"It's for us. For a better life." I reminded her as we ate dinner.
She wiped her mouth with the napkin and faced me squarely. "How about Austin? How will he hold up?"
"He's good, I guess." The sadness was evident in my voice. Truly, I'll miss Austin and his cute face and lips that kept telling me how much he loves me with that smile on his face.
"He'll be fine." Liam shot me a grin from where he sat.
I nodded quietly as I ate my food, ignoring the stares mum and Liam shot me.
