Chapter 57 - Simple nest

Locke held the sharp stone he used to kill the strange creature and walked towards the surrounding stones. Locke's body hadn't recovered yet, so he had to carry a weapon in his hand. The strange creature had an abnormal pincer, which left a deep impression on him on his arm.

Looking around, the small sharp stone he used to kill the creature was the only weapon he could use. Locke actually had another weapon, which was the dagger hidden in his boots. However, he didn't know how to use it. The strange creature's carapace was so hard that he wasn't sure if he could cut it with a dagger.

The stones around him didn't disappoint him. As soon as Locke turned one over, he saw two of the strange creatures stacked on top of each other and spitting out grey bubbles. The grayish-white creature was enjoying the cool under the stone when it was startled by the sudden appearance of Locke and the sunlight. It kicked its eight legs frantically and raised its pincer at Locke.

Locke, who was already experienced, avoided the raised pincer and smashed it down with the stone in his hand. Bang! Bang! Bang! After a few smashes, the two grayish-white creatures clung to each other and turned into two meat patties.

Locke panted and fell to the ground. He stretched his hand towards the carcasses of the two strange creatures and dug into them with his fingers, ignoring how disgusting it was. The half of the grayish-white creature he just ate wasn't even enough to fill his teeth. These two came just in time.

Eating raw food didn't feel good, but Locke still ate it with relish. These strange creatures weren't like other insects that had a sour or unpleasant smell. Other than the slightly astringent taste, Locke could accept everything else. This was much more delicious than the black bread in the camp. Locke didn't know if it was because he was hungry or because this thing really tasted good.

After finishing the food in his hand in two or three bites, Locke collected the shells, pincer, and eight legs of the two strange creatures that couldn't be eaten. Firstly, he felt that these things should be useful since they were so hard. Secondly, Locke had experienced camping in the wild more than once in the past four years of war. It was extremely unwise to expose the smell of blood and food residue in the wild. Locke still didn't know what was going on around him, so he didn't dare to be careless. Fortunately, Locke had eaten everything cleanly and didn't have to clean up much. He only had to put away the ones that he couldn't eat.

Ever since he started practising impetus, Locke's senses of his body had become much stronger. For example, he could clearly feel the food he'd just eaten reaching his stomach. The weak impetus in his body was slowly gathering in his stomach to aid in digestion. Because the impetus was too weak, Locke could only feel it, but he couldn't control it. Fortunately, it could run on its own, so he didn't have to worry about it.

After regaining some of his strength, he glanced at Angelina, who was still unconscious, and then at himself. He sighed and said, "I have to find a place to stay as soon as possible." The jungle was dangerous at night, and he couldn't guarantee that no creatures would come to this place at night. Although he had recovered some of his strength, he was still injured all over. A coyote could probably kill him.

Locke looked around and saw that the side of the lake was close to the cliff. There was a slightly concave inner wall. Although the space wasn't big, it should be no problem for the two of them to lie down. Locke first went over to take a look. After making sure there was nothing unusual, he went to the forest next to him to find some withered branches and leaves. Although most of the trees here were evergreen, there were still some that had withered and turned yellow in late autumn. Locke easily carried a large bundle back.

He took off his half-body armour. It was already broken and useless, so he was ready to dismantle it. In his opinion, the rubber bands, the remaining iron pieces, and the cloth were more useful than hanging there in a half-dead state.

He piled the dead branches together and placed them in the shape of a simple campfire. Locke wasn't deceived by the evergreen plants around him. He didn't forget that it was late autumn and there was no campfire at night. No matter how strong his body was, he would inevitably fall sick. In this deep mountain forest, sickness meant death, not to mention that Locke was injured at this time.

In addition to the dead branches for the fire, Locke went to the nearby area and tore a lot of turf. There wasn't enough cloth as a cushion, so he could only make up for it with grass. Unfortunately, most of the grass in the forest was relatively short. It took Locke a long time to tear enough for the two of them at night. As for the cover for sleeping, Locke looked at his tattered clothes and pants.

In the evening, the sun was setting. Perhaps because there were trees and cliffs on all sides, the sunlight disappeared very quickly. The temperature showed that it was late autumn at this time, and it soon became unbearably cold. Fortunately, Locke was prepared. He took a wooden stick and stuck it on the dead branch that he found earlier. He took out two belts that he removed from the half-body armour and wrapped them around the two ends of the stick. Locke grabbed one end with both hands and pulled quickly. The wooden stick rotated at a high speed. The dead branch that Locke chose was pine tree, which was rich in oil. The dead branch quickly caught fire.

It was rare to use such a primitive method of making fire. Fortunately, Locke didn't lose his skills. The fire on the dead branch gradually grew stronger. Locke hurriedly added a few sticks that he picked up. The dead branches alone were not enough to burn for a while.

While the sky was not completely dark, Locke went to the sandy beach by the lake and found a few stones. Bang! Bang! Bang! Locke, who had already gained a lot of experience, harvested four more of the grayish-white creatures. He carried two in each hand and ran back. This was the only food he could think of to replenish his water and calories at the moment. There was no pot, and Locke was too lazy to set up a grill. He wrapped the four strange creatures in mud and threw them directly into the fire.

After all this, Locke went to see Angelina. Locke carried her to the simple cave. It couldn't even be called a cave, because it was just a small area that was recessed into the cliff. The only thing it could bear was to help them shelter from the cool wind at night. But Locke was already very satisfied to be able to find such a place.

Angelina still hadn't woken up. If she hadn't unconsciously eaten something at noon, Locke doubted that she would be able to wake up. Thinking of the scene of Angelina sucking his finger at noon, Locke blushed and hurriedly dispelled this lingering fantasy.

She's a princess, she's a princess, Locke thought to himself.

Locke took off the clothes on his upper body and checked his injuries. There were scratches on his chest and back, probably caused by hitting something when he fell off the cliff. There were also a few cuts on his arms. Most of them were scratches like the rest. Only one wound was deeper, which was half an inch deep, caused by the grayish-white creature's pincers in the morning. This little thing was quite strong. Locke cursed, but it tasted good.

Because most of the wounds had already scabbed, Locke suffered a lot when he took off his clothes. Many of the scabs were still attached to his clothes, and when he took off his clothes, many of the wounds started bleeding again. Frowning, Locke used his clothes as a rag and wiped the blood off his body. Then, he took out a leg of the strange creature he had collected and drilled an eye with the tip of the dagger hidden under his boot. He passed a linen thread through the eye, and a simple needle was made.

The wound caused by the grayish-white creature was too deep, and Locke had to stitch it up. Otherwise, if he got tetanus, he wouldn't be far from death. On the battlefield, when soldiers were injured, most of them used a needle to stitch up their wounds. After that, they would be able to endure it and recover.

Although he had stitched himself countless times, Locke still grimaced in pain. Finally, he made a beautiful knot on his wound. Locke stretched his arm and found that it was very strong. Putting away the simple needle and thread, the smell of barbecued meat came from the fire. He found a stick and poked the "beggar's chicken" out of it. Locke blew a few times and gently punched it with his fist. The strange creature's carapace was very brittle from the fire. With a crack, it cracked, revealing the white and tender meat inside.

Locke took a deep breath of the fragrance, then began to eat the carapace. It was like roast chicken. Perhaps the method was based on the beggar's chicken, but Locke could taste the taste of roast chicken. After eating three in a row, Locke finally felt a little full. The meat was only the size of a palm, yet only three were enough to fill him up? Locke felt that his appetite had decreased a lot.

Locke took the remaining one and walked to Angelina. The "roast chicken" in his hand was still emitting a fragrance, but Angelina had no intention of waking up. Angelina, whose mental power was severely overdrawn, still needed a long time to rest before she could wake up.

Locke was in a dilemma. How could he feed her if she didn't even open her mouth? He couldn't eat her raw again. It was fine to eat her raw once, but eating too much would definitely spoil her stomach. Just as Locke was scratching his head and thinking about how to feed Angelina, her stomach growled softly. After running for a day and a night, Angelina, who hadn't eaten anything at all, was actually very hungry. She hadn't woken up yet, but her body honestly reflected it. Looking at Angelina's delicate face and moving lips, Locke suddenly thought of a trick.

After feeding Angelina, Locke hurriedly left to inspect the surroundings. If Angelina woke up at this time, it would be embarrassing. Angelina, who still had some saliva at the corner of her mouth, probably wouldn't know how this guy fed her just now.

Although there were no other creatures in the surroundings during the day, Locke still looked around worriedly. Water was generally an important resource for the survival of creatures in the forest. This lake was a rare saltwater lake, so it was normal that no animals came here to drink water. Locke and Angelina relied on the body fluids of the strange creature to replenish their water. There were limited stones on the sand around them, and it was estimated that there weren't many of those strange creatures living here. Locke had to plan ahead and find drinkable water.

Unfortunately, after walking around, there was only more forest. Coupled with the low visibility at night, Locke didn't find anything. Back in the simple cave, Locke pulled over a piece of turf and knitted. When he was young, his sister had knitted straw clothes for him to play with, and Locke knew a little about it. He was going to knit a turf quilt. It was too cold under the cliff, and the little heat provided by the fire was not enough.

Perhaps because he was too tired, Locke fell asleep halfway through knitting. Before falling asleep, he didn't forget to hug Angelina as a source of heat. Locke had completely let go of the princess. Whether or not the two of them could make it out was another matter, so he didn't care anymore.
