Chapter 128 - Chapter 128: Chort's Last Stand

Lann raised his left hand, and the magic power on the panel was quickly consumed.

[Aard Sign]

The violent hurricane swept away the poisonous dust and revealed the Chort within. The monster had already absorbed the poisonous mist into its body, this action was to prevent the poisonous gas from hurting the allies.

"Follow me!"

Lann activated the Quen Sign and his body glowed with golden light. Black Wind became excited by Lann's movements and rushed towards the Chort at a terrifying speed.

"Haha, follow the Lion of Cintra!" Yarpen shouted excitedly, leading his group, running even faster than the armored knights.

Once near the Chort, Lann tried the [Axii Sign], even with a boost of hundreds of magic points, it only managed to make the monster move its head slightly. Then the flames created by the [Igni Sign] only managed to irritate him, although they burned his goat's beard, they failed to ignite his skin.

The magic resistance of the Relict class was truly exceptional.

Taking advantage of Black Wind's speed advantage, Lann circled around the Chort, occasionally attacking it. Using the Lady of the Lake Sword smeared with the Relict Oil, he opened several bloody wounds, and these wounds did not heal.

"Lann, step back, it's up to us to deal with such a big guy!" Yarpen shouted.

Yarpen's team was well organized, two with chains, two with nets, and the rest with heavy weapons such as axes and hammers, they clearly had experience in facing large creatures like this.

Lann twitched the corner of his mouth in dissatisfaction and then used the [Yrden Sign].

An hourglass-shaped magic circle appeared on the ground, a purple light instantly attached to the monster's body, making it visibly slower.

Although its duration was short, it gave the dwarves a crucial opportunity.

Yarpen was overjoyed when he saw this, and he kept praising the witcher. At this moment, the status of the lion in his heart surpassed that of the white wolf.

The dwarves took advantage of the time when the [Yrden Sign] was active, throwing the net over the Chort and securing it firmly, then more than a dozen dwarves surrounded the net with thick chains, before pulling hard.

With a dull sound, the Chort was knocked to the ground.

"Haha, this is the method we used to deal with the dragon! It's just that the net at that time was even bigger, and we also poisoned it!"

Lann pursed her lips, thinking that the dragons of this world were really not as imposing as they were made out to be.

A Temerian knight stood shakily, leaning on his sword. "This way of fighting... is not honorable at all."

With a sharp sound, an arrow flew across the battlefield and accurately stuck in the Chort's eye, followed by a second and third arrow.

The arrows could not cause large wounds to the monster's flesh, but even small wounds to the eyes could cause great damage.

The Chort began to fight with more intensity.

Yarpen and Zoltan took out two long hooks and pulled one of Chort's hind legs from two different directions. Then large axes struck that leg, followed by two heavy hammer blows against the back of the axe, pushing the ax head directly into the Chort's leg.

With a crunch, one of its hind legs snapped, and the Chort howled desperately.

Then, several dwarves threw claw-like hooks onto the Chort's back, with nails on the other end. The dwarves pulled on the chains until the nails sank into the ground, keeping the Chort firmly bound.

The Chort struggled savagely under the threat of death, but under the combined effect of the net, chains, and hooks, he was momentarily unable to free himself.

Lann was amazed by the way the dwarf team fought. For the first time, he felt that hunting monsters was so easy.

"Hehe." Yarpen smiled. "Master Witcher, I leave the final blow to you. Professional matters should be left to professionals."

Lann modestly responded: "Yarpen, you are the real professionals."

This time the monster hunting process was really too easy for him. Lann jumped on the shoulders of the Chort who barely had the strength to fight. He raised the sword above his head and began to gather power. The rune sword flashed slightly.

[Rend]!

With a sudden slash the Chort's head rolled on the ground making a thud, and then a large amount of blood gushed out like a fountain.

"What impressive strength!" Yarpen sighed sincerely as he watched Lann use a long sword to produce effects that even a heavy ax could not achieve.

Lann jumped off the still writhing corpse, stabbed the rune sword into the monster's neck, and began removing the sword. After a while, he took out a piece of blue and green bloody tissue that he placed in an alchemical vial.

This was one of the specific objectives for which he returned to confront the Chort: the 'Chort mutagen'.

If Lann gives it to Jerome, he would be able to prepare a 'Chort decoction'.

At this time, Lann finally had time to look back at the Temerian princess standing aside.

Looking at the still confused princess, Lann smiled slightly and said: "Your Highness Adda, we meet again."

Adda was shaking slightly because of fright, but she still stood up straight. Her face was pale, and Lann noticed that her hair was now sprinkled with silver strands.

Lann frowned. If he remembered correctly, Princess Adda would be cursed to turn back into a Striga, and the prelude to this change would be her red hair turning white.

Before, when he first saw her, she didn't have these streaks of color in her hair, was it because she was in mortal danger or because she encountered a Relict-class creature?

"Thank you for your help... Lannister. It seems that not only are you brave as a monster hunter, but your companions are also quite skilled."

The princess was unaware of her change, and thanked Lann with a dry throat. Meanwhile, the dwarves were busy discussing how to skin the Chort. When Yarpen and Zoltan saw the frightened princess, they strode over and saluted her.

"Foxy, you idiot, stand up, how long are you going to pass out?"

The tax collector appointed by the king slowly woke up. He was kicked hard by the princess twice in a daze and quickly got up. Then he looked around before he finally woke up.

"Take good care of these brave warriors!"

Adda pointed at the dwarves and the Cintra cavalry, then she turned her head to look at Lann, and her pale face gradually turned red.

"Lannister, you saved my life, just like the White Wolf before. I won't let you go so easily this time, how can I thank you?"

Then she looked around, trying to find the lord of White Orchard: "Where is Verrieres? Such a big thing happened in White Orchard, where is he, the lord?"

The biggest victims last night were the cattle at the White Orchard Lord's Mansion. Due to the previous incident, the herders here have resigned, giving Milva the opportunity to kill the cattle.

It is also for this reason that the Chort first appeared near the lord's mansion. In theory, Verrieres should be among the first group of people to encounter the monster.

The princess would stay in the largest house in the area, but the owner of the house was not there. At first, they thought he had been killed by the Chort, but inside the mansion they only found the body of the fat butler.

Everyone searched for Verrieres for a long time, in the end, Lann activated the witcher's senses and tracked him to the Verrieres family cemetery.

Zoltan crossed his arms. "Why...why did he run in here? Did he think that his ancestors would protect him from monsters?"

Yarpen was more direct. "He's a fool. He was probably scared and running around pointlessly. I'm sorry, Your Highness, I didn't mean to offend."

Adda's face turned even worse, not because of the dwarf's words, but because the tax collector sent by the king whispered a few words beside her: "The Verrieres family cemetery is said to be haunted, people avoid going near it."

Hearing the tax collector, the princess looked to Lann for help.

Lann nodded. "I have heard of this rumor. If my suspicions are correct, it is a type of monster called 'Wraith'. It is born from a person's lingering resentment after death or due to a curse."

"I'm very curious. How could the lord's family crypt spawn these Wraiths?"

Hearing Lann's judgment, Adda hesitated to speak. But the tax collector brightened and looked expectantly at Lann and the soldiers behind him. "Then I wonder if Lord Lannister can show mercy and remove this harm from White Orchard? The villagers of White Orchard will definitely sing praises of your grace."

Lann looked at the tax collector and, after waiting a moment without receiving a hunting mission notification, frowned.

Lann sneered: "Do you want me to get rid of this threat to White Orchard, or to you? You are very brave."

Seeing that Lann was upset, the princess looked at the tax collector disapprovingly and quickly said: "They have returned exhausted from the trip to help White Orchard."

"I think the dwarves will need time to deal with the monster's corpse. Why don't you stay and get some rest?"

After saying that, she approached Lann and changed her way of addressing him. "When I wanted to meet you at the palace, I really had something important to discuss with you, but you ran away. You can't be so rude this time, Lann."
