"Sister…"
"… Ding… wan..."
"Huh? Is someone talking to me?"
He tried to open his eyes and adjust his vision but he couldn't make out any details; everything was just a blur. It angered him that he couldn't make out the identity of the figure before him but he could faintly hear some whispers. His eyes slowly opened and suddenly, both of his senses failed him since he could neither see nor hear what the person in front of him was saying.
"What are you saying?"
The figure kept mouthing something and an unpleasant coldness settled in his stomach and this made him very uncomfortable…
"… Ding? ... ke up!"
He threw the heavy feeling from his shoulder and covered himself up. Lily seeing this, shook her head in disbelief and pulled the beddings from his figure and he groggily sat up at this. His clothes were slightly wrinkled from sleep and there were a few small stains here and there. His hair was tousled, sticking out in different directions. His eyes, half-closed, blinked slowly as he adjusted to the light, a hint of sleep still lingering in them. His lips were slightly dry and he had a relaxed, open-mouthed expression.
"Are you still unwilling to get up?"
Moving slowly and sluggishly, he stretched his arms and arched his back slightly to relieve the stiffness from the sleep.
"Mmh? Who... you?"
As he spoke, his voice was husky and hoarse, with a groggy, sleepy tone. Lily chuckled amused by this, she raised two fingers in front of him and he tilted his head to the side, furrowed his brow and pout his lips.
"Do you think am blind?" he asked, fully awake now and Lily shrugged her shoulders.
"Breakfast is ready your highness," she stated teasingly and walked out of the room.
Ding flipped some hair from his eyes and leaned against the bed rest staring out the window onto the horizon which was covered with a lush carpet of green grass. The vibrant colour and soft texture of the grass created a serene and inviting landscape.
As he contemplated getting off the warm comfort of his bed, he heard a faint yet clear voice which aggressively shouted his name. From the tone, he could tell it was Lily and that she was not pleased. Hastily, he washed his face and dashed out the door and towards the dining hall where the kids were all seated as the waited for the very first meal of the day.
"Brother!"
"Good morning kids," he greeted them and took a seat," Did you have a good night sleep?"
"Yes!"
"Now kids, time to eat, you don't want to miss class right?"
At the mention of this, they all hungrily gobbled down their food and Lily chuckled.
"Carefully now."
Lian and Cole sat on the couch attentively watching a movie. With the remote in hand, Cole switched channels and Lian looked at him annoyed.
"Hey! That fantasy film was good. Why did you change it to the news?"
"Oh please Lian, aliens invading earth? How old are we… five? I'd rather watch something more believable than green monsters that don't even exist."
"Of course they don't exist silly. Those films are called 'fantasy' for a reason, they are purely fictional," he stated before bluntly adding," in short, they are not real."
Cole looked at him from the corner of his eye and rolled his eyes," When do you think Master Ding will be back?"
Lian lowered his gaze from the screen and nervously bit his lower lip," He's been gone for two whole days. Do you think something bad might have happened to him?"
"Something bad?"
"Yeah, I hate to admit it but am actually worried about him."
Cole blinked in surprise at this statement and grabbed Lian's shoulders completely catching him by surprise. He shook his body to and fro and Lian groaned.
"H, hey! Cut it out!"
Cole stopped shaking him and stared into his eyes," Why are you worried about a guy who is a MAFIA leader? Are you out of your freaking mind?"
"N, No! I… just…"
"You what?" he asked and leaned towards his ear before whispering," I know you and I share the same goal."
"Ah!"
Lian pushed him away and regretted acting so cautiously. Cole's face which was usually sweet and innocent turned into one filled with murderous intent and this alarmed him.
"You…"
Memories from their first encounter surfaced into his mind and finally, all the pieces came together. He took in a steady breathe and turned to Cole.
"You were captured because you miscalculated and missed to hide some evidence right?"
Cole crossed his arms over his chest an amused smirk on his lips," Oh? You're smart. I would expect nothing less from a police officer."
At the mention of this, Lian froze in place surprised rather than concerned.
"How did you…"
"How did I know about your identity though you are careful in your tracks?"
Lian did not want to adhere to his curiosity, not even one bit but failed this miserably. Random questions popped into his mind and he closed his eyes.
"Don't be so worked up. Like I said, you and I have the same goal in mind right?"
"What do you mean 'same goal'?"
Cole moved closer to him till their thighs were skin to skin. Lian could feel Cole's heat coursing through his skin even though they both had on some pants. He placed his hand on Lian's knee, completely catching him off guard and gave it a light pat.
"We both want Ding out of the picture right?"
"That's…"
"Do you want to know why am doing this?" he asked and Lian nibbled on his fingers.
Tempting as he may have sounded, Lian shook his head in refusal," That's highly confidential information."
"Confidential?" he asked and let out a sigh," sometimes I don't know if you are naturally naive or just an idiot."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Don't you think it's fair that we know more about each other since we will be working together?"
"Well…"
Lian painfully knew that if he wanted to succeed, he would need all the help he could get and what better person would suit the role than someone who has been with Ding and knows some information he didn't, not that he knew much apart from the personal information chief had handed to him on the very first day of his mission.
"Okay then. Why do you do this?"
"Well, it all began eight years ago..."
Lian sat and attentively listened as Cole narrated his story.
"No matter how many times I look at it, that's just so inhumane! How can such a person exist?"
"Right? So I'd advice you not to pity him. He's a murderer who doesn't deserve our pity. I believe you strongly fight for justice right?"
Lian turned his face away and Cole saw his fists clenched. It did not take him long to know he hit a jackpot. Gently, he placed his hands over his trembling fists and gave him a small smile.
"Don't worry, if we work together, am sure we'll both have what we so desire."
