Chereads / Prince of Sentinels / Chapter 17 - Magic Classes

Chapter 17 - Magic Classes

Emily and Silas swiftly made their way over to Glover, who was still standing amidst the charred remnants of the theater. Without hesitation, they approached their ally, offering a hand to assist him. They were ready to help him escape from the once-grand but now ruined venue.

As they exited the ruined theater, their path was abruptly blocked by a contingent of steampunk police officers. The officers, clad in their distinctive attire and armed with advanced steam-powered weaponry, formed a formidable barrier. Their faces were hidden behind brass masks and goggles, giving them an intimidating, mechanical appearance. The hiss of steam and the faint glow of arcane symbols on their gear hinted at the power they wielded.

The steampunk police officers, despite their imposing appearance, exhibited a hint of nervousness as they faced Emily, Silas, and Glover. Their fingers twitched near the triggers of their steam-powered weapons, and their eyes darted nervously from one member of the trio to the other. The circumstances of the battle within the theater had left them on edge, unsure of how to proceed.

After a tense standoff, a voice of reason prevailed among the officers, and a senior officer, whose brass mask bore the insignia of a cog with wings, stepped forward. They seemed to realize that these three individuals were not to be trifled with, given the magic and martial prowess displayed during the intense battle. With a terse nod, the senior officer signaled for the others to stand down. They stepped back, lowering their weapons, and allowed Emily, Silas, and Glover to continue on their way.

"You owe me, Glove," The senior officer declared.

"Yeah, yeah… whatever," Glover lightly smirked.

He may have been an underworld crime boss, but before that, he was something else. Something greater most would say. Although, that's a story for another time.

[Location: Chronotome Archive]

[Opening Time: 7 AM]

[Closing Time: 10 PM]

[Extended Description: This grand repository of knowledge defies the very laws of time and space, holding within its hallowed walls an eclectic collection of books, scrolls, and manuscripts from across dimensions and ages.

The library's exterior is a stunning blend of architectural styles, reflecting the mishmash of historical periods and cultures that converge in Paradoxia. Elegant marble columns reminiscent of ancient Greece support archways adorned with intricate steampunk gears and ornaments, while Gothic spires soar skyward beside futuristic glass domes.

As you step inside, you're greeted by the warm embrace of dimly lit, bronze-paneled corridors that stretch as far as the eye can see. Enormous bookshelves line the walls, containing everything from medieval tomes to scrolls filled with eldritch runes, each beckoning visitors with whispers of untold stories. The library's layout is a labyrinthine maze, and visitors can easily become lost among the endless stacks, transported from one era to another with each turn.

Natural light practically beams through the opened holes in the roof of this library, allowing you to read anything, anywhere, at any time. As long as there is moonlight, or sunlight, or any artificial light gunning through the ceiling, the absorption of information is possible.

A rich tapestry of scents fills the air, blending the comforting aroma of old leather-bound books with the subtle tang of machine oil and the mustiness of ancient scrolls. The ambient sounds within the library create a symphony of whispers as pages rustle, and the soft clinking of gears fills the background.

The staff of the library consists of scholars and librarians who possess a deep understanding of Paradoxia's temporal intricacies. They are responsible for maintaining the library's unique cataloging system, which sorts materials based on their connection to various dimensions and time periods.

The library holds an eclectic assortment of books, scrolls, and texts, each representing a specific era, civilization, or branch of knowledge. However, there's a unique twist – every piece of knowledge within the library is bound to the flow of time itself. The information within these texts is limited to the era or time period from which it originates.

For instance, you might find detailed treatises on ancient, lost technologies, but they will provide no insight into modern advancements. Visitors may peruse volumes on historical events, but they won't find predictions about the future. This time-locked content provides an unparalleled glimpse into various ages and eras, but it's impossible to access knowledge outside the specific timespan of each text.

This peculiar restriction serves as a reminder of the intricate fabric of time that weaves through Paradoxia, and it challenges the library's patrons to appreciate the knowledge they gain within the context of its temporal origins.]

"So… a regular library…" Silas muttered as he gazed past the information window and looked at the stunning arched entrance to the massive library. "Are there future gazing libraries?"

Shoving that thought to the back of his mind, he entered the library. The check-in was quick as all he had to do was pay a couple of bronze coins and the rows and columns of beautiful amber textbacks were his to enjoy.

In his casual steampunk outfit, Silas grabbed a few books and sat down at one of the various tables. He wore a leather aviator's cap with bronze goggles, an intricate waistcoat with cog designs, and a deep brown leather jacket adorned with brass accents. Underneath, a high-collared white dress shirt with lace jabot adds a dashing touch. His accessories include leather wristbands concealing small tools, a bronze pocket watch, and knee-high leather combat boots. All of this was specially tailored by a friend of Glover.

Silas pores over ancient tomes and scrolls, absorbing the intricate details of the world's unique magical systems. Illuminated by the natural sunlight pouring from outside, he discovers the secrets of steampunk technology intertwined with mystical glyphs and sigils.

As he reads, Silas begins to unravel the complex art of manipulating steam and gears, understanding how these components power not only the machinery but also the very magic of the realm.

What he read was practically a treasure trove of knowledge, home to a diverse array of magical classes that thrive at the intersection of steam-powered technology and spellcasting. Aquanots are masters of Hydromancy, harnessing steam technology to control water-focused glyphs, summon torrents, create ice constructs, and manipulate liquid. Steam technology allows them to precisely adjust the pressure and temperature of steam, enhancing the power of their water-based spells.

Infernicians excel in Pyronetics, utilizing steam technology to generate flames, fireballs, and fiery barriers. They use steam-casting gauntlets equipped with fire vents and fire crystals to superheat steam, creating intense blazes, and controlling the direction of fire-based spells.

Golemtogglers are experts in Cogwrought Conjuring, using steam technology to combine elemental and clockwork constructs. They manipulate steam to actuate gears and clockwork elements within their creations, often relying on specialized steam technology like clockwork blueprints and summoning circles.

Temporalkeepers practice Chronosteaming, manipulating time through steam technology. They control the flow of time using specialized time-tuned gears and steam core amulets, granting them the ability to foresee events and make tactical decisions based on their heightened foresight.

Avianalysts harness Aerothaumaturgy, employing steam technology to create gusts of wind, levitate objects, and achieve flight with steam-driven wings. They use mechanical, steam-enhanced wings to navigate the skies with ease.

Chimetransmitters specialize in Steamscry, using steam technology to configure Steamcaster devices with communication and divination glyphs. They can send and receive messages over long distances and gain insights into past, present, and future events, relying on steam-communicators and steam-focused devices.

Remedists are skilled in Vitasteamurgy, using steam technology to heal injuries, purify water, and restore vitality. They employ healing steam gauntlets with steam chambers filled with medicinal herbs and steam-enhanced crystals to direct healing steam to specific areas.

Glyphguards are experts in Gyromantic Warding, using steam technology to create protective steam barriers, force fields, and deflection mechanisms. They employ steam-casting shields and disruptors, releasing steam with precision to provide defense and interfere with enemy machinery.

Disruptionists specialize in Disruptech, using steam technology to interfere with enemy Mechamagic, disrupt spells, and counter rival Steamcasters. They utilize steam-casting gloves, steam cannons, and steam-infused ammunition to disrupt enemy mechanisms and spellwork.

Chemibrewers practice Alchasteam Infusion, blending alchemical concoctions with steam technology to amplify magical effects. They incorporate steam technology through alchemical vials containing steam-enhanced elixirs with dual chambers and pressure valves for controlled infusion.

Terragrafters are masters of Terravironcraft, using steam technology and earth or plant-based glyphs to control the growth of plants, alter terrain, and create natural barriers. They rely on portable steam-spreading devices equipped with steam-release valves and earth glyph arrays to shape the environment.

Wee… Woo… WEE… WOO…

Suddenly, the tranquil atmosphere was shattered by the blaring wail of police sirens outside. The sound cut through the serenity, echoing off the towering bookshelves and sending a jolt through those who sought knowledge within. One of those was Silas who immediately understood the situation.

Moments later, the heavy wooden doors swung open, and a few steampunk police officers stormed into the library. Their boots thudded against the polished marble floor as they entered, their uniforms adorned with brass badges and mechanical accessories. Each officer held a steam-powered gun, threatening the library's vast expanse, while the soft hiss of steam escaping from their gadgets filled the room. They scanned the surroundings with a mix of suspicion and determination, casting their watchful gazes upon the library's visitors and the knowledge seekers who sought refuge amidst the shelves.

Amidst the organized chaos of the library, one of the steampunk police officers caught a glimpse of Silas. The bright lighting of the library revealed his presence, and for a brief moment, their eyes locked. Recognition flashed in the officer's eyes as he took notice of Silas.

In an instant, the officer gave chase, barking orders to his comrades, and soon, the library was filled with the clamor of boots against the marble floor. Silas, however, was quick and agile. He expertly maneuvered through the labyrinthine shelves, his knowledge of the library aiding his escape. In a calculated series of moves, he outpaced the officers, his footsteps echoing down the echoing corridors.

Silas burst from the library's grand entrance, disappearing into the bustling, crowded streets of this puzzly city. Despite the police's best efforts, he easily melted into the sea of people, finally losing him amid the chaos.

'Silas, I got word the escorts found you. Where'd you even go?' Emily asked through the small intercom placed Silas' ears.

"To the library. I'm good though. Lost them pretty quick."

'Okay, well come back soon. Glover has a gig for you and the reward is pretty good. I wouldn't miss it for a drop of knowledge if I were you."
