Chapter 13 - Through Another's Eyes

'Allister! Scan the Sovereign and please tell me it's dead.'

'Sure thing...do you want me to tell you that or do you want the truth?'

'Shit. Shit shit shit shit shit. OK. Can you tell what kind of condition it's in?'

'From my scan it appears to be in a half sleeping half comatose state. It is unlikely that it will wake up soon but I am not sure.'

'Thanks. Do we have anything that can kill or capture it?'

'The Calcium Cyanide you used previously was the only thing available in the shop that could potentially kill it. As for capturing it, No, the containment systems of a Pokeball, Great Ball, or Ultra Ball are not big enough or powerful enough to contain such a large Pokemon.'

'What about a Master Ball? I remember seeing one in the shop.'

'A Master Ball would probably be able to handle it but you do not have enough SC. A Master Ball costs one million SC but you only have nine hundred thousand. I only told you the options you could afford.'

'Shit. I'll go and ask that scientist if he brought anything that could work'

Finished talking to Allister I VERY carefully made my way back to the group. A chill went up my spine as I made my way past the Sovereign, just the thought that it could wake up at any moment had me scared shit less. I saw James examining a body a short ways away, his back was to me so as I got closer I cleared my throat to get his attention and started talking even before he turned around.

"Ahem..Professor I just looked at the bodies in the cavern where I first saw the Sovereign and they all had foam around their mouths and blood coming out of their eyes but when I looked at the Sovereign's body there was no foam or blood. We need to examine the Sovereign right now to see if it's still alive and if it is I sure hope you have some sedatives strong enough to keep it asleep."

James turned to look at me and as he did his eyes looked past me and grew wide and a look of terror came over his face. At that same moment a chill went up and down my back and I knew, The Sovereign was awake.

I slowly turned around and made a serious mistake, I looked right into the Sovereign's eyes. I froze. Those eyes were, at first, filled with confusion, then sadness, then anger which rapidly turned into hate. Looking into those eyes I was stunned, in the blink of an eye the Sovereign's entire life flashed through my mind. Tears started to fall from my eyes as I kept saying the same thing over and over again.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

** Sovereign's POV **

I was always smaller than my egg mates, no matter how much time passed or how much I wanted to grow they were always bigger than me. They would always beat me up when play fighting and I always had pains and scratches on my small body. As time passed they all got stronger and better at hunting and I remained the same, small and weak.

It came time for all the males to compete for the attention of potential mates. First was always fighting to show the females we could protect them and their young and then came the mating dance where any interested female could make their interests known. As expected I couldn't defeat even a single other male and was set to dance last. All the others were focused mainly on one female. She was beautiful, her scales were pure white and here eyes were crimson I could only wish and watch because there was no way she would choose a weakling like me.

One after the other my egg mates performed their mating dances and attracted the attention of one or more mates. As it came to be my turn only the beautiful white female had yet to choose a mate. As I moved forward to begin dancing all the other males hissed in amusement, as if to say there was no way she would choose me.

I looked at her and she looked at me and I began to move. At first she remained still but as I continued to dance she began to move in sync with me. I was so shocked I almost stopped moving, almost. I poured everything into my movements and she came forward and began to move with me, twisting and turning so close together that if we were the same color you would think we were one.

We came to a stop eye to eye just looking at each other and I felt a bond with her that I had never felt with anyone else. It was at that moment the other males attacked. They couldn't accept that I, the weakest runt of the group, could attract the attention of the most beautiful and sought after female. I was able to dodge and weave away from most of the attacks as I had gotten used to them over the years. When I saw an opening I darted for it and was able to escape the crowd and there she was waiting for me.

We fled as fast as we could. We knew we could never go back so we didn't stop moving. We traveled for days, avoiding others until we found a small unclaimed piece of forest, we made a small nest for ourselves and for a time we were happy. Spring came and with it our first eggs, sixty-three of them, my mate would stay with the eggs and I would hunt and bring back the kill so she didn't have to move.

It was during one of my hunts that I heard my mate screech in pain. That sound hurt me more than any attack I had ever received, I darted through the grass and trees as fast as I could until I came to our nest. A strange creature was standing over my mate holding her head to the ground with one of it's limbs while making sounds I could not understand.

"My my my an albino Ekans. This will fetch a nice price if I stuff and mount it."

My mate was struggling to get free and the strange creature stumbled into our nest breaking many eggs. Seeing that broke me out of my surprised state and filled me with anger. Seeing my mate be abused and our eggs smashed I felt an energy rise inside me that I had never felt before. It grew stronger and stronger and I felt my body shift outside of my control and I grew taller and taller until I dwarfed the strange creature and my shadow fell across it.

It turned to face me giving my mate the chance to get free and when she was far enough away, I struck. I tore the creature to pieces and scattered it's body until my rage was appeased. My mate seemed to not recognize me, I lowered my head and gazed right into her eyes before rubbing my head against her. My gaze and touch showed her it was me and we turned towards our broken nest, of our sixty-three eggs only thirty remained whole. We grieved for a time and then moved on with our life, we still had eggs to take care of.

Soon it came time for the eggs to hatch and from them we counted seven males and twenty-three females. It was an uneven number which I'm sure would lead to conflicts when it came to mating season. For some reason our young ones were growing much faster than I remember my egg mates growing, especially the females who, for some reason, were always gathered around me.

Mating season came and all seven males left to find mates elsewhere because none of the twenty-three females chose any of them. When the males left my mate tried to chase the females out as well but they would not leave no matter how hard she struck them. Finally I nudged her with my head communicating with her to stop, they had made their choice in who they wanted as their mate.

Looking at my twenty-four mates I knew I needed to find a safe place for us, I would never allow something like what happened with that strange creature to happen again. I searched through other territories dodging attacks and attacking in turn as I searched. I checked every hole, every cave, everywhere I could until I found it. A hole, barely big enough for me to enter but when I went in deeper it opened up into an enormous cave system. I knew this was it, more than enough space for me, my mates, and many many offspring. I went back to my mates and brought them in to help me explore our new home.

As we went deeper the air changed, I could taste salt in the air. I followed the trail until I came to a large underground lake. I slid into the water and found a tunnel connected to the outside, this was perfect. A large space for living and water access for hunting, we would never need to leave our new underground home.

We made our first nests inside a large cave at the very bottom of the cave system not far from the lake. I spent lots of time with each of my mates until once more it was time for eggs to be laid. I was proud of my mates, we had been eating well and apparently that paid off as all twenty-four of them laid one hundred eggs each, and again my job was to provide food for my mates as they stayed curled up around their eggs.

My first mate, my beautiful white scaled queen had made her nest directly in the center of the cave to show the others that she was special and I agreed with her she was my soul mate she was the most special to me. When our eggs hatched there were thousands of young ones to take care of but I was happy to do that, they were my family and I would provide for and protect them always.

A few years passed and all of my mates and some of our young had become like me now, we had grown larger and stronger than any others of our kind and each generation was growing faster and stronger than the last. As I grew larger and stronger I was able to feel a connection with each of my mates and decendents, I could feel where they were in relation to myself.

More years passed and our nest grew so large that our young decided to venture out of the nest. I warned them but they wouldn't listen, so I gave a command, I didn't know how I did it but I knew that I could. I ordered all of our nest to remain hidden and not to leave, unfortunately I moved to late. The small hole I had first entered through had been made larger and some of the newly evolved young had left, I could only hope nothing would happen to them.

My hopes for those that left were dashed as I felt one connection after another dissipate and I knew they had died. Only one was left and I hoped that he would survive as I returned to the depths of my home to curl up around my mate and sleep.

I woke a few days later to the feeling of many connections being lost, I knew that the entrance to our home being opened would lead to conflicts. As the nest grew over the years I realized that the newest generations needed to be thinned or driven out to keep our nest manageable, so feeling the connections from the highest level of the nest being lost I was not concerned and quickly resumed sleeping.

I woke again to more connections being lost and somehow I knew we were in trouble. I uncurled my body from around my mate and looked around our cave, something was different, there was some sort of object in our cave. Suddenly the object made a sound and a white powder was flung into the air covering myself and my mates. Everywhere the powder landed burned and I heard my mates hissing in pain. Enraged I let out a sound I had never made before, it was so loud it shook the walls of the cave and made dust fall from the roof. I rushed towards the main cave but only made it half way before darkness took me.

As I came to I felt a deep feeling of loss deep inside myself. I raised my head and looked around, four of those strange creatures were close to me. I tried to understand the things I was feeling when I realized all of the connections were gone. No not all, there was still one but it felt far away, but it didn't matter everyone else was gone.

My gaze fell upon one of the creatures as I finally made sense of everything. My confusion of the missing connections turned to a deep sadness at the loss of my family which turned to anger at the fact I would never feel my mates curled around me again and finally my anger turned to hate. Hatred of these strange creatures that always seem to be the cause of death in my life.

A feeling welled up inside me almost the same as the first time my mate was attacked. A strange energy was filling me causing me to grow stronger and stronger but at the same time I also seemed to be growing smaller. I had become the same size that my mate had been and not only that but my scales had changed color from the purple color I shared with most of my family to a deep black that was unique to me.

The strange energy that was filling my body gave me strength and fueled my hatred. As I faced the four creatures around me I planned to make them suffer before I killed them. They would pay for the deaths of my family.
