Chapter 16 - Hot Chocolate Cookies

A ding~ sound of an oven made the previously day dreaming Neva to gain back consciousness—informing her about the time that elapsed.

She abruptly placed down the novel she had been engrossed in and climbed off the white marble kitchen counter.

Hastily wearing the oven mitts, she clicked a button to turn off the cooking cycle.

Swiftly taking the tray out, the smell of freshly baked chocolate cookies floated in her nose, tingling her senses tingle.

Neva smiled, satisfied.

"I'm back~" Out of nowhere, a loud manly sing-songing voice resonated throughout the apartment.

She waited for him inside the kitchen, placing the hot cookies on a steel cooling rack.

Laying it on the dining table to let it cool.

"Angel I'm back!" Rhett happily strolled inside the kitchen, grinning seeing his beloved's face.

"I see, I see," Neva responded, nodding casually.

Rhett's gaze landed on the fiery hot chocolate cookies.

"Is it done?" Rhett glanced back at her. Neva nodded in response. Rashly throwing the groceries on the ground, he shuffled towards her.

Neva squinted her eyes at his behaviour.

Rhett lowered his body, hovering the cookies, inhaling the sweetness deeply. "Hmm, smells so good.

Just when he curled his fingers to devour the appetizing cookies, Neva's slapped his hand.

"Oww! Why?" He exclaimed, rubbing his right dorsal hands with the left palmer side.

"It's hot," Neva warned.

Rhett made a noiseless oh with his mouth, nodding in realization.

"How long will it take to cool down?" He pouted. "It will soon." Saying, Neva sauntered towards the abandoned grocery bags, dispositioned on the floor messily.

"Have you brought everything I asked?" Neva probed, walking towards the dining table with the grocery bags in her grip.

"Yes." He replied, nodding.

"Angel, I can't wait. I want to munch on them now." Rhett complained like a little boy.

"Have patience," she took the groceries out, one after another—arranging the goods.

With her peripheral vision, she saw him drooling over the cookies. Hardly controlling himself from going all out and gobbling them whole.

She sighed, such a restless, foodie guy. Worrying he would burn his mouth she picked up a piece—all the while Rhett's sharp gaze trailed her moves.

It was still really heated. But nothing she couldn't handle. She blew on it. Several seconds later... She brought the cookie near Rhett's mouth.

A reward for him.

Who obediently hadn't touched any of them yet.

"Try it," Neva apprised.

His surprised eyes brightened up, melting slow her heart. Like an ice–cream.

Closening, Rhett bit the whole thing in.

His lips grazing her slender fingers. And Neva felt shivers running down her spine.

He dramatically closed his eyes in delight, moaning in pleasure, the warm chocolate's wet moisture melting in his mouth.

"Is it good?" Neva bit her lips nervously.

Rhett nodded, appearing to be in daze."Took me to heaven!" He licked his lips.

Neva chuckled, continuing arranging the groceries.

"Rhett where's the packet of rice?" She crossed her arms over her chest, glaring at him.

"Rice? It must be there." He shrugged.

"It isn't here. I've checked thrice! You!" Neva raged.

"What are we gonna have for dinner?"

"Did I forget?" He looke up at the ceiling, appearing to focus on the flashback.

"Maybe I did. Well then, chocolate cookies for dinner." Rhett suggested, grinning happily.

Neva fumed, her cheeks puffing, glaring at him. "Go back to the store or else no dinner for you!"

Rhett's eyes widened alike a disc. "No! You're cruel! I'm worn out. Why don't we just eat cookies?"

The space between her brows crumpled deep in anger.

For a long unknown while, the unnamed couple kept bickering like an old husband and wife...

"You get nothing!" Neva concluded, preparing a jar.

"I'm sorry," Rhett falsely cried out.

---

After a lot of trouble and quarelling over who would go to fetch tonight's dinner.

Neva finally made a choice that she would go.

"Why are you tailing me now?" Neva inquired, while fixing her pink scarf.

"What would I do if some bad guys kidnapped you? Young lady, don't you fear?" Rhett reasoned squinting at her.

Well he just didn't want to be away from her.

Neva glanced at him and huffed, exhausted to squabble for today.

At the convenience store, Neva was busy inspecting the variety of packed rice, while Rhett walked beside her close, pushing the cart with now added groceries.

Although, this evening, Rhett was unusually guarded.

"Rhett do you need anything else?" Neva asked.

"No. Are you finished?"

She nodded. Looking at him she frowned. He looked a bit restless. "Is something wrong?"

Rhett smiled and shook his head. "If you're done, let's leave."

---

After a ten minutes walk from the convenience store, Neva and Rhett reached their apartment building. The whole way from the store to here, he knew someone was following them.

"You head back in first. I've got to make a call." He said, opening the door for her.

"Alright, don't take too long—or else the cookies will be gone." She giggled, sauntering inside.

"No fair!" Rhett exclaimed, deception is what he felt.

After making sure she was inside safe, he closed the door.

His expression turning grim.

He walked down the stairs and headed towards a secluded area within the corner of the compound with bush and trees.

He then took our a pistol tucked behind his jeans.

"Come out." He threatened.

From starting at the grocery store, untill all the way here, he knew someone was creeping in on them.

A tall shadowy figure, concealed in the dark of trees by the wall—slyly crawled out into the dim light.

He was covered in black—head to toe.

His lowered head, and masked face hidden behind the hood.

"What do you want?" He urged, the pistol aimed at him.

The tall, slenderly built man pulled down his hood and removed the mask, revealing himself.

Rhett forrowed his eyebrows. Lowering the weapon he sighed agitated.

"Explain Ace." Rhett demanded coldly, tucking in back the gun in his jeans.

"Damn! Boss, did you get a girlfriend? Your girl's a real hotty!" He smirked at him, his blue eyes glinting.

And with a smooth glide to fetch the dagger strapped in his ankle—Rhett flung the blade at the blabbering guy.

The dagger flew towards Ace, but he made shifted his body and leisurely ceased it, the blunt handle in his grip, right before it could stab his eye.

"Whoa!" He exclaimed, heart racing.

"Don't you dare," he glared at him, warning him—aware of his playboy nature.

Hinting his anger, he raised both his arms in defense.

"Just kidding Boss. I don't dare steal a lover from Leader Czar." He shrugged his shoulders, grinning with strain, showing off his straight pearly whites.

"Why are you even here?" Rhett spit out.

"Elk send me here." Ace returned.

"I'm on leave." He remarked, turning to leave.

"It's another team job. Boss have some pity on us." Ace exulted, begging, almost tearing up.

He was always miserably squeezed between Elk and Czar.

"Elk won't let us be if you don't relent. He warned that he'll fire you, and all of us too." Ace reacted, beseeching faced with a nonchalant Rhett's broad back. Well he lied the last part.

Rhett seized his steps and glanced at him over his shoulder. "Inform the pawky old man to kindly fuck off!"

A dumbfounded Ace was left behind as Rhett took off towards the apartment. Sighing, he shook his head—pulling the hood over his head.

Glancing one last time at the apartment Rhett dissapeared within, he smacked his lips and turned around to leave the compound.

It was bewildering his aloof leader could even bag a woman, and even such a ravishing one. And it seemed more than just a fling.

He made a face.

He had a lot more to unravel about Czar.

But right now, his mind was a battlefield—mentally he prepared to defend himself with with the bigger Boss's oncoming rage.
