Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Octavia

Veleria, the heart of the Eternal Empire, beamed with regal splendor. Its obsidian roads were frequently trodden upon by imperial soldiers, their armor intricately designed with deep blacks and silvers, blending both functionality and majesty. The notable red crystal embedded in each armor caught the fading sunlight, emanating a fiery hue. As the sun dipped beneath the horizon, the city was illuminated by floating magic lamps. Their ethereal glow gave the markets an otherworldly ambiance, where traders showcased the empire's boundless treasures. High above, the black banners adorned with the emblematic red phoenix fluttered—signifying the empire's indomitable spirit.

Inside the sprawling chambers of the Imperial Palace, Lucius found Octavia meticulously setting the table. Her posture, though flawless, revealed an undercurrent of loathing.

He observed her for a moment, a smirk playing on his lips. "Quite the sight! A former princess reduced to laying out dishes. Did you ever envision this for yourself?"

Without missing a beat, Octavia shot back, "Did you ever envision a world where you weren't the most hated creature? Oh, wait. That would be your dream."

Lucius chuckled, circling her like a predator sizing up its prey. "Tsk tsk. Such fiery words from someone who's seen the might of the Eternal Empire up close."

She spun around, her eyes flashing with anger, "Oh, you mean when you so 'bravely' stormed my kingdom, killed my father, and—," she took a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure, "—forced yourself upon me?"

He came closer, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "Ah, precious memories. Tell me, Octavia, do you remember the color of the sky that day? Or were you too busy cursing my name?"

Octavia clenched her fist, "Every day with you is a reminder of what I lost. I see it when I look at these walls, when I hear the laughter of your soldiers, and when I lie down every night."

Lucius, clearly amused, leaned in, his lips near her ear, "Every night, you say?" Without warning, his hand darted out, giving her rear a sharp slap.

She jumped, her cheeks turning a shade of crimson, "Demon!"

His laughter filled the room. "You flatter me. And here I was thinking of offering you a special position in my empire."

"You mean other than your plaything?"

"Oh, far more prestigious than that," he teased. "Ever thought of governing? Maybe, I don't know, your old city of Belum? It's in need of... management."

Her eyes widened momentarily before narrowing into slits, "You want me to govern the ashes of my past? You really are twisted."

Lucius merely shrugged, his voice dripping with mockery. "Just a thought. After all, who better to manage the ruins than its former princess?"

Octavia took a moment, inhaling deeply before finally saying, "Keep your offer. I'd rather endure your torment than play puppet to your whims in Belum."
