Caleb groaned in pain as the nurse continued to fiddle with the IV lines, injecting him with yet another round of medication. The drug coursed through his veins like a cocktail of agony, making him feel like he was being slowly disintegrated from the inside out.
The nurse glanced up at him, her eyes glinting with a mix of sympathy and annoyance. "You're lucky we did this," she said sharply, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Otherwise, you'd be fucking miserable right now."
He winced as the nurse yanked on his IV line before tying it securely to the pole above his bed. She muttered under her breath about incompetent doctors and lackluster hospitals before turning her attention to the next patient.
He watched her go with resignation, feeling like nothing more than a collection of pain points on a list of necessary tasks for her day. He wasn't sure how much more he could handle - both physically and emotionally.
