Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - 2 Years Later

Two years have gone by and today is selection day. Just like all the Previous Selection days the Representatives came. But they didn't come to district 8 this time. They went to district 9.

A week before selection day a couple of other residents in district 8 and I traveled to district 9 in hopes of having another chance to be selected. Traveling there wasn't hard since district 9 was so close. We arrived there just in time, so we got to witness the representatives doing their routine walk around the district.

District 9 was just like district 8. The buildings were strong and sturdy. The outsides were smooth, none of the houses had doors and all the houses were windowless. The houses were like shiny metal boxes lined up in perfect rows all looking the same. The whole place was made with metal with sprinkles of plastic trees.

The streets, just like district 8, were dirty and filled with broken bones. The people were just as boney and just as ugly. I look at Deformis and its not as ugly as the people make it seem. Deformis itself isn't ugly, it's just unlivable.

I hope I get chosen but even if I don't, I have a plan B. After 2 years I have finally made a boat, it's not very big. Big enough to carry me and one other person. I saved up all my food that has been sent from the other districts by starving myself.

I hope its enough for the trip. The first year was spent researching and finding every bit of information I can find on how to make a boat. The people in district 8 mostly ignored me while I went sniffing around for books.

I didn't even bother asking them for help. These people aren't really living, they are just surviving, surviving until they get the chance the go to Pulchra. Other than selection day, on every other day the faces of the residents of district 8 are neutral, and their eyes are blank and soulless. I also spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I was going to make the boat out of. Figuring that part out was surprisingly easy.

I made the different parts of the boat out of anything I could find. Things like the plastic from those fake trees or some planks of synthetic wood that was just lying around. There is always some that comes with the supplies that get sent to our district. Nobody uses them though; they are just kind of there so nobody had a problem with me taking them.

Basically, anything I could find until I finished the boat. I was a masterpiece, I tested it out and I can proudly say she floats. And I tested how well the boat will do against the acidity of the water and she passed that test as well.

Everyone in district 9 and the group that came with me to district 8 gathered in the center. The people in district 9 looked at us with contempt, because they don't want us to get chosen.

I can understand their contempt. I would feel angry as well if someone from another district came to my district on selection day, and they got chosen instead of me. I would probably think that if only that person wasn't there, I would have got selected. It was finally time for the selection. The representatives came and chose the first person.

The first person that got selected was this young boy from district 9, he didn't look older than 12. He looked especially skinny and malnourished even compared to the other kids, but he was quite tall.

The second person to get chosen …. was me.
