After Maxwell told me about the so-called tradition I wasn't sure of how to react or what to do. I was glad I sat down if not I would have ended up on the ground.
Why did he have to force me here if he planned to get rid of me? I couldn't even fight a child not to mention the strongest female in the moonstone pack.
Maxwell promised to help me reach out to the pack doctor for some herbs to uplift and strengthen my wolf but I was too pissed to remain calm. I had promised myself to stand up for myself and I wanted to confront Richard.
I walked to his chambers, I kept my expression blank even though I was fuming inside.
I had a lot on my mind to tell him... no, to remind him how terrible he was even though I'm sure he already knew.
I sorted through my mind trying to remember everything I wondered about but came up short. I had so many things to say but couldn't recall any but one.
"You brought me here to have me killed?"
He looked at me with no trace of emotion on his face. "Go straight to the point or take your leave.
"You are aware of what I'm talking about. You only told me I was going to train to become strong not that I would fight Lisa."
He was mute. I sniffed trying to dry my teary eyes.
"I can't fight Lisa I'm not strong enough... I'm not even strong at all. I would be dead if I even tried to go up against her."
"You can't have it any other way... And what difference would it have made if I had told you? You're just being dramatic."
I stood there for a while looking at him and I wondered what turned him this way or if he was born like this so heartless and wicked. I didn't understand how he could bore such evil and wickedness in his heart.
I left the same way I came in, back straight and staring proudly ahead but on the inside hurt and devastated.
As I walked out of the room, I reminded myself that the reason I wanted a mate was to feel love again, the excitement, the pain with the pleasure.
I got to my room and shed tears. I have always known I was so unlucky but I didn't think... that I would die so soon in the hands of my mate.
I woke up the next day feeling hopeful and decided not to ruin my morning by going to the dining hall to see Richard and Lisa's faces.
I had an appointment with Maxwell that morning as well so I went straight to the field to collect the herbs he promised me.
"Hey. How are you doing?"He asked concerningly.
"I'm okay." I gave him a grateful smile.
"Oh good." he sounded relieved.
"Yeah, I'm cool. Did you get the stuff?"
"Yeah I did" he put his hand in his pocket and handed me the herb... it was in a round airtight container.
"It tastes as awful as it smells so whenever you want to take it cover your nose and close your eyes," he advised but when he saw the irritated look on my face he laughed.
"Thank you so much for helping, I owe you."
"It's okay... do you need any other thing?
"Actually yes, there is someone I haven't spoken to since I got here and I'm sure they are worried about me. I would like you to help me reach out to them since I can't leave until the ceremony is being concluded."
"Who is that? Your family?"
"Yeah, my friend Mira I came to the party with her and since then we haven't spoken. If you could please arrange for us to meet."
"ok. Fine."
"Thank you." I flashed a smile at him and left.
Later that night, I decided to go for a walk on the premises of the estate. The fresh clean air filled my lungs, and the mixed scent of dust and cornfield was a sweet slightly pungent smell.
I lay down facing the sky and looking at the stars. It reminded me of how my dad and I would come out at night to look up and count the stars. He would always say each represented all of us on earth and-
My thoughts were interrupted when I heard footsteps coming towards me. I looked up and oh it was Maxwell approaching me with a wide smile on his beautiful face.
"What are you doing outside by this time?" Maxwell asked.
"It's not late yet. The night is still young."
"Hm. I see."
We lay down on the grass and we faced up looking at the sky in silence.
The moonlight created a peaceful ambiance and the stars twinkled, the air felt crisp and cool. I always loved the night it was a time when the whole world slowed down.
All of a sudden we heard screams and the estate bell was rung 3 times. I saw the panic and ready-to-fight look on his face but he looked at me and asked. "What do I do with you now?"
"What's going on?" I was so confused.
"There is no time to explain much but the bell means there is danger and it's probably an attack from our rival pack."
He thought for a while and continued. "Follow me, so I can hide you and join our pack in fighting."
The once peaceful night became chaotic.
Maxwell left me in a small hut that looked like it was used for storage and left me. I could see people turn into their wolves, I was so scared and hoped not to be found by the enemy.
Still sitting with my thoughts and prayers not to be found and for Maxwell to be safe. I thought of Richard too… Urghh, I hate that I always think about him even when I don't want to. Having a mate is such a curse.
After a while of staying in hiding, I heard footsteps or noises of twigs breaking and I could smell the wolf coming but I could also hear footsteps of people I knew I had to take action.
I hid behind a big log I shut my eyes tight and unluckily for me the wolf found me, probably with my scent. I felt it breathing on me I was so scared it growled loudly.
I screamed so loud and the wolf went silent I could feel its gaze on me before I could open my eyes, someone from behind covered my face with a cloth which I guess had some substance in it because I got so weak. I couldn't talk or walk but I could see even though it was blurry.
A group of men dressed strangely, one of them took a closer look at me and said "Yes, she is the one." Then I was carried away.
