Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE

Aurora

I woke up feeling like a truck had run me over, and you know what? I'd rather get hit by a truck than go through what I did last night. It was all in the past now; today's a new day, and I have to go to work with no proposal shit! Collin is going to have a field trip chewing me out.

I hesitated for a few minutes and eventually got out of bed, ready to prepare for work.

When I first got to the office, I couldn't help but notice something different. I could see it—scattered files around, people gossiping amongst their peers. Did Collin perhaps not turn it in today?

"Have you heard?"

Someone blocked my path, and I looked up and saw my co-worker Marina. She was standing in that gossip pose with a funny expression on her face.

"I don't think anyone will be happier than you," she said.

I drew to her sneakily, dying to know what it was.

"The company has been sold to some rich man, and Collin's is no more."

It sounded like a joke, and I laughed so hard I couldn't believe my ears. It was too good to be true.

"You're joking, right?"

"Of course not. You should've arrived earlier to see him carry his things. He was grinning ear to ear. This rich man offered him triple of what this company is worth."

"Wow." I was so stunned by this new information that I couldn't process it all at once. Just last night I was played by some rich guy, and today my evil boss is no more. I knew there was a reason why I suffered last night's humiliation. After every misfortune comes a blessing.

Flashback

"Surprise!" A lady in red lingerie yelled enthusiastically. However, her happiness was short-lived as soon as she laid eyes on me.

She spat out her cigarette and advanced towards me like a predator would to his prey. I sought protection behind Mr. Stranger's back, but she was quick to yank me out and grace my cheek with her palm.

"Johanna!" Mr. Stranger yelled, seizing her hand mid-air as she prepared to dish out another slap.

"What about it, Pierce?" She screamed. "You can't tell me she'd

know you're engaged. Doesn't she watch the news?"

The words engaged resounded in my head like a fire alarm. I wanted to tell her I genuinely had no idea. I never would've approached him from the beginning if I knew he was someone's man. But why was he absolved of all the blame while I was left to carry the blame alone?

"It's high time I start teaching these leeches who are only after your money a lesson," she said.

I felt so insulted, I couldn't stand here and endure this anymore. My cheek stung, and tears pricked at the corner of my eyes. I knew he was too good to be true. Nothing good ever happens to me anyway.

Spinning around, I darted towards the exit, letting the tears fall freely.

End of flashback.

"Oh my god, I think he's here," said another of my co-workers, Rachel, getting everyone's attention. Before I knew it, Marina and the entire office were running over to the window where Rachel was standing trying to get a glimpse of this new boss.

I was curious, but I kept calm. He would be here in no time anyway.

"How do you know he's the one?" asked someone in the crowd.

She looked outside the window like a detective, adjusted her imaginary glasses, and said, "My instinct tells me he's the one."

As Rachel expected, footsteps soon followed. Everyone was filled with anticipation, wanting to know who this new boss was.

He walked in, and my jaw fell off the ground. I quickly raised it, but it fell open again. Strolling in like a runway model, covered in designers from head to toe, was the same man who smashed my heart to bits last night, Pierce.

"Good morning everyone," he greeted, coming to a stop just several inches in front of me. "I'm your new boss, Pierce Vargas. I look forward to working with you all."

Everybody swooned; just his stance alone oozed class. The whole room was soaking up his cologne. Maybe if he hadn't been exposed as a cheater last night, perhaps I would've been gone just like everyone else here. But he no longer had that effect on me.

They all clapped. I, of course, joined the crowd. I wasn't ready to kiss my job goodbye yet, although it seemed like the correct thing to do right now, seeing as I just moved from the frying pan to the fire.

Why do all my bosses always have a thing for me?

"Ms. Aurora."

The mention of my name caused my head to snap up. I locked eyes with Pierce.

"I would like to see you in my office, please," he said and left.

I trailed after him, refusing to face my co-workers. They surely had questions, and I'm afraid I was not willing to give them answers just yet.

"I'm sorry about last night."

Pierce's mean demeanor was swapped for a soft one the second it was just us two.

Anger surged through my veins. "I don't want to hear it."

"Let me explain-"

"Save your explanation. All you do is lie anyway." I looked away bitterly.

"I never lied to you." He defended. Come to think of it, he was right. He never lied; he just omitted some things.

"Can I please go back to work?" I was holding myself back from lashing out at him because he was now my boss, but I wasn't sure how long I could hold on.

"Aurora-"

"Don't you dare say my name like that?" I interjected, fed up.

"Don't you see how weird all this is? Fine, we had a one-night stand. The next day, you delivered flowers to my house without me telling you my address. Then you call me; I don't remember giving you my number either, but I skip that part because you're acting all sweet. You had me gone, I won't lie…"

"Then you take me to your house, and I see a woman who is half naked sitting on your couch. Like that isn't enough, she slaps me pretty hard, calls me a gold digger, then I find out she's your fiancee…"

"I can-"

"Shut up; I'm not done."

Clearing my throat, I continued my speech, "Next morning, you show up in my workplace, and boom, you're my new boss. Next thing I know, we're in your office, with you calling my name affectionately, trying to get me to forgive you when I never even told you my name. Don't you see how wild all this is?"

I felt stupid, like the main character in a silly romance novel. My words seemed to do the trick as he appeared speechless. Forget his approval; I spun on my heel and exited his office.

I wasn't prepared for the scene that faced me next. All my co-workers were gathered outside the office, looking at me shocked. I immediately went pale as a ghost. The look on their faces said it all.

The entire office now knew I had a one-night stand with my new boss who is engaged.

Tell me, how unlucky could my life get?
