Marissa
"What are you doing here?"
That chilling voice was enough to tell me who was behind me but I couldn't believe it. There's no way the king would be here.
I turned slowly and raised my head to meet the greatest shock of my life. Standing right before me was the King.
His face was void of emotion. His eyes were a mixture of two colours; purple and gold.
I gulped and immediately stepped away.
"What are you doing here?" He repeated in a voice harsher than the roar of a lion.
I have never heard anything like it before. How can someone's voice be soft and harsh at the same time?
I turned to see the demon, King Ilyas giving me a death stare. I almost wondered how fast he left his throne to appear here. He was out there a few minutes ago.
How did he suddenly appear here?
Fear engulfed the whole of my depressed mind l, I didn't know what to do or say. Slowly, I got on my knees.
"I'm… I'm just nothing but a slave," I stammered with my eyes down.
He held my chin with two of his fingers and pulled my face to look at him. When my eyes met with his cold but handsome face, my entire body shook.
"That wasn't the question," he repeated slowly.
I searched my brain as I tried to remind myself of what the question was. As if to answer my thoughts, he smirked and repeated,
"What are you doing here?"
His entire appearance got me in a fix. I couldn't tell what I was doing there. I had totally forgotten.
If asked what mine is at the moment, I'm sure that I wouldn't know because my mind is befuddled by the King's sudden appearance.
"I ..."
"Who are you?" he demanded, his voice now laced with irritation.
"I... I was on my way out," I managed to spout a lie.
"Out?" he frowned, seemingly confused.
I wonder why I was saying things in the opposite.
"Leaving the....bar.... banquet."
I immediately corrected myself before my anger came out in words.
"Not fun enough?" He took a few steps away from me as if to study me.
Is he trying to read my mind?
My mind went to the discussion I had with Maria earlier and I couldn't help but panic.
What if he sees how much I loathe him? Will he kill me?
If he kills me now, I won't be able to save the kingdom from this monster.
I tried as much as I could to mask my feelings and emotions, making sure that all I thought about were good things.
I moved every thought about the king or his outrageous party to the deepest part of my mind.
"No, I... I have to clean the other part of the palace." I lied.
I locked my fingers and clenched my fist as I silently prayed that the king wouldn't figure out my lies.
"Hmm," he mumbled, his eyes scanning Mr thoroughly.
"You're new here, aren't you?" He scrutinized me.
His continuous stare made me feel uncomfortable. The hair on my body stood in fear.
"Yes, Your Majesty," I replied, making sure that I did not bow to this tyrant.
He is no king of mine. I would never bow to him.
"Who is your mistress?"
I don't know what he meant by that but I just said whatever name that came to my lip.
"Yolanda... Madam Yolanda."
"Hmm," he circled me. "Yolanda, huh?"
I wonder why the king seems different from what he is known to be. Isn't he supposed to be monotonous?
He was rumoured to be a monosyllabic monster. His only language is blood, so Why is he talking so much right now?
"Yes, Your Majesty," I replied, trying as much as I could to make my voice sound normal.
I wouldn't want to show any sign of weakness. The king is rumoured to be able to play on one's weakness and I wouldn't want to become one of his victims.
"You aren't a ..."
"Majesty, the game is coming to an end." A guard appeared out of nowhere and knelt beside the king.
Ilyas hissed and growled at the same time. His eyes fluttered and glowed as he looked down at the guard as if he would kill him for interrupting whatever he was about to say.
The guard kowtowed immediately, chanting words in a language I couldn't understand.
King Ilyas turned away from the guard and settled his eyes on me for a while. I looked down immediately, making sure that our gazes didn't meet.
I didn't know how long it took for them to disperse, but before I could blink, the King was gone and so was the guard.
I couldn't find any of them.
Without further delay, I took to my heels, making sure that I didn't look back. I wanted to leave that place and the only thing that could do that was my leg.
I arrived at the Maid's and went straight to my room. I threw myself on the bed and covered myself to my head.
My whole body was covered in sweat and was panting like a dog. Meeting the king was like seeing the devil in the flesh.
I couldn't get over the sight.
So many things weren't right about him. I mean, how could he be so angelic, yet so devilish?
He is cruel yet so cool.
If I wasn't a witness to his cruelty, especially to what he did at the arena then I would have doubted the authenticity of the news.
However, after what I saw today, my hatred for him doubled.
I lay in bed and tried to get it all out of my head. I wanted to go back to the time when I hadn't met the King so closely but I couldn't do that.
Sleeping was becoming so hard that I had to squeeze my eyes tight yet nothing happened.
I didn't know when I finally fell asleep or how long I had been asleep until the door suddenly opened and Madam Yolanda's voice rang in my ears.
"Marissa!"
I jumped out of bed and sprang to my feet as I answered her call.
"Yes, Madam,"
She turned and walked out the door immediately.
"Come with me."
