Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38: The Challenge of Master Han Lingxiu

Zhang Xin arrived at the remote and secluded dwelling of Master Han Lingxiu, his mind racing with anticipation. Master Han, known for his powerful skills and his reputation as a legendary cultivator, was no ordinary teacher. Zhang Xin had heard countless tales of Han Lingxiu's strength, but none of them prepared him for the intensity that awaited.

The dwelling was situated high in the mountains, shrouded by a dense mist that seemed to swallow the world whole. As Zhang Xin stepped through the mist and toward the entrance, he could feel the air growing thicker, the pressure mounting with each step. This was not a place for the faint-hearted.

Master Han Lingxiu stood in the doorway, his eyes sharp and calculating as he regarded Zhang Xin. The old master's presence was imposing, his aura exuding a quiet yet overwhelming power that sent a shiver down Zhang Xin's spine.

"Welcome, Zhang Xin," Han Lingxiu greeted him with a curt nod, his voice gruff, yet carrying an undeniable authority. "I've been expecting you, but I hope you understand that you've come here to learn through struggle. This is not a place for weakness."

Zhang Xin swallowed the knot in his throat and nodded solemnly. "I am ready to learn, Master."

Han Lingxiu's eyes glinted with an unsettling sharpness. "Good. But first, let's see if you truly have the resolve to stand under my tutelage. If you can make me take one step back in combat, I'll teach you what you need to know. If you fail, you'll return to where you came from."

The challenge hung in the air like a dark cloud. Zhang Xin's heart raced, but his resolve only hardened. The words were clear—this was no mere test of strength. It was a battle of wills, one that could determine his entire future.

"I accept your challenge, Master," Zhang Xin said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins.

Without a word, Master Han Lingxiu immediately assumed a battle stance, his posture unshakable, as though he was a mountain. Zhang Xin, though taken aback by the suddenness of the challenge, quickly composed himself. His body tensed, his senses sharpening. He could feel the air itself thickening with the energy surrounding the old master.

The Fight

The fight began before Zhang Xin could even fully prepare. Han Lingxiu moved with startling speed, his body shifting like a shadow, and with a single step, he was upon Zhang Xin. The strike came like a thunderclap, a powerful palm aimed directly at Zhang Xin's chest.

Instinctively, Zhang Xin sidestepped, barely managing to evade the strike. The force of the attack left the air rippling around him, and he could feel the pressure build as his opponent prepared for the next move. Master Han Lingxiu's eyes never left him, his every movement deliberate, calculating, as though each step was part of a larger plan.

Zhang Xin's mind raced as he analyzed the situation. The master's attacks were unrelenting, each strike faster and fiercer than the last. Zhang Xin was being pushed back, his movements growing heavier with each passing second. The old master was testing his limits, forcing him to react, to think, and to move faster than ever before.

The battle raged on, a whirlwind of movements and counterattacks. Zhang Xin was quick, but Han Lingxiu's experience was undeniable. The master had anticipated every move Zhang Xin made, and every time Zhang Xin thought he saw an opening, Han Lingxiu was there, his palm or fist crashing down with terrifying precision.

Zhang Xin's chest burned with exertion, and his limbs ached from the constant evasion. He knew he couldn't afford to lose. His entire future depended on this fight, and he wasn't about to give up.

Then, in the split second he had been waiting for, Zhang Xin saw it—a slight misstep in Han Lingxiu's posture. The old master's left foot shifted just slightly to the side, his balance faltering for the briefest moment. It was all Zhang Xin needed. With a swift, powerful strike, he lunged forward, his fist connecting with the side of Han Lingxiu's chest.

For the first time, Han Lingxiu staggered back, his feet sliding across the ground. The force of Zhang Xin's attack had made the master take a single, unexpected step back. It was small, but it was enough.

Zhang Xin stood there, breathing heavily, his heart pounding in his chest. He had done it. He had won.

Master Han Lingxiu looked at him with a mixture of surprise and respect. The battle had been fierce, and the young warrior had proven his worth. Slowly, Han Lingxiu raised his hand in acknowledgment.

"You've done well, young warrior," Han Lingxiu said, his voice softening for the first time. "You've earned my respect. You may have won this round, but the real journey is just beginning."

Zhang Xin, still panting from the intensity of the fight, bowed deeply. "Thank you, Master."

The Request

Now that he had proven himself in battle, Zhang Xin seized the moment to ask about the map and how to rid himself of its aura. He had hoped that this would be the next step in his journey.

"Master, I have a map that I need to rid of its aura. Can you help me?" Zhang Xin asked, his voice full of quiet urgency.

Han Lingxiu studied him for a long moment, as though weighing the gravity of the request. Then, his eyes narrowed in thought. "I can help you, but it will not be easy. Removing the aura of the map requires a special pill, one that can cleanse the dark energy within it. It will take time, but I know what must be done."

Zhang Xin leaned forward eagerly. "What do you need to make this pill, Master?"

Han Lingxiu sighed, as if preparing himself for a difficult task. "There are three rare ingredients needed. First, I need Soulfire Essence, which can only be harvested from the heart of a fire phoenix. Second, Moonlight Dew, collected during the full moon in the Sacred Grove of the Silver Leaves. And finally, Dragonroot Herb, which grows only in the deepest part of the Pathway of Treasures."

Zhang Xin's mind whirled as he processed the information. The task was daunting, but not impossible. However, it was the last ingredient, the Dragonroot Herb, that made his heart race with a mix of excitement and fear. The Pathway of Treasures was a place of immense danger, a realm filled with cultivators of unimaginable power, all seeking treasures beyond their wildest dreams.

"Where can I find these items, Master?" Zhang Xin asked, his voice tinged with both determination and unease.

Master Han Lingxiu's gaze grew somber. "The Pathway of Treasures opens once every thousand years, and the gates are about to open again. The timing is critical. But remember this: you are not the only one seeking these treasures. Many cultivators will gather in the Pathway, all of them powerful, all of them dangerous. You will need to be careful."

Zhang Xin's heart thudded in his chest. "I will find these items. I'll go to the Pathway of Treasures and retrieve them."

Han Lingxiu nodded gravely. "Very well. But remember, Zhang Xin, this is not just a quest for treasure—it is a trial of survival. You must be prepared to face the worst of the worst. Do not underestimate the dangers that lie ahead."

The Pathway of Treasures

The next day, Zhang Xin set out toward the Pathway of Treasures, the weight of Master Han Lingxiu's warning heavy in his mind. As he approached the entrance, he could feel the air growing thicker, the pressure building with each step. The Pathway was a place where only the strongest survived, and Zhang Xin was determined to prove that he was one of them.

When he arrived, he was greeted by the sight of a massive stone gate, its surface etched with ancient runes that pulsed with an eerie light. The gates had not opened for a thousand years, and now, at last, they were about to.

Around the gate, Zhang Xin could see countless cultivators gathered—each one exuding a powerful aura. Some were meditating, others were sharpening their weapons, and a few exchanged whispered words. Every single one of them was a threat.

Zhang Xin felt a chill run down his spine as he stepped closer to the gate. The competition would be fierce, and survival was not guaranteed. He had to be careful. He had to stay focused. And above all, he had to trust in his own strength.

The moment the gate finally creaked open, Zhang Xin could feel the pull of the treasures that lay within. He stepped forward, his heart pounding in his chest. He was ready for the challenge, but as he moved deeper into the Pathway of Treasures, he knew that the greatest trial of all was just beginning.
