Chapter 42 - CHAPTER 42: The Forbidden Challenge

Zhang Xin's heart quickened, his fingers instinctively curling around the hilt of his sword. The woman before him exuded an air of menace, an energy that rivaled even the strongest cultivators he had faced. Her eyes glowed with an unnatural intensity, a sharpness that seemed to pierce right through him, as though she were reading his very thoughts.

"I've been waiting for you," she repeated, her voice low and ominous. The words hung in the air, thick with an unsettling promise. "You are a threat, a threat to everything in this place, and I am the one sent to stop you."

Zhang Xin narrowed his eyes, his posture tense as he scanned the woman, trying to gauge her strength. He could feel a cold, suffocating aura emanating from her, a sign that she wasn't just some random cultivator. There was something ancient, something dark, in her presence.

"I didn't come here to fight you," Zhang Xin said, his voice steady, though his body was on high alert. "But if you insist, I'll defend myself."

The woman's lips curled into a smile, one that sent a chill down Zhang Xin's spine. "Oh, I insist. After all, you must prove yourself worthy of the treasures in this Pathway. But be warned, young warrior, my strength is not something you can overcome easily."

Before Zhang Xin could react, she flicked her wrist, and a dark energy surged toward him. It moved faster than he could react, a shadowy tendril that seemed to distort the air around it. Instinctively, Zhang Xin leaped backward, drawing his sword in a single fluid motion. He swung it with precision, cutting through the dark energy that aimed to entangle him, but the woman was already on the move.

She vanished into thin air, reappearing behind him in the blink of an eye. Zhang Xin barely had time to react as a wave of dark energy shot toward his back. He twisted around, narrowly dodging the attack, his sword clashing against her dark tendrils with a loud metallic ring.

The power of her strikes was immense, each one sending shockwaves through the air, shaking the very ground beneath them. But Zhang Xin wasn't one to back down. He focused his mind, drawing on the energy within him, and channeled it through his sword. The blade glowed brightly, an aura of golden light surrounding it as he prepared to counterattack.

"You have power, but it's not enough," the woman said, her voice cold as ice. She flicked her fingers again, summoning a swirling vortex of dark energy that surrounded Zhang Xin, trapping him in a cage of shadow.

Zhang Xin's breath quickened as the darkness closed in around him. It was suffocating, oppressive, like the very air was being drained from his lungs. But he wasn't one to give up so easily. He closed his eyes, reaching deep within himself, tapping into the reserves of energy he had cultivated over the years. His body hummed with power as he pushed against the darkness, his mind focused on one singular goal: breaking free.

With a primal roar, Zhang Xin unleashed a burst of energy from his core. His sword flashed brightly, cutting through the dark tendrils like they were made of paper. The cage of shadows shattered around him, the force of his strike sending the woman stumbling backward.

For the first time, the woman's expression shifted. There was a flicker of surprise in her eyes as she regained her composure, her dark energy swirling around her like a storm. "Impressive," she said, her voice laced with admiration. "You've managed to resist my power. But you're still far from ready for what's to come."

Zhang Xin didn't waste time. He pressed the attack, his sword flashing with lightning speed. The woman countered with equal ferocity, their blades clashing in a dazzling display of light and shadow. Each strike reverberated through the air, the power behind each blow making the ground tremble beneath their feet.

But despite the intensity of the battle, Zhang Xin could feel something shifting within him. His movements became more fluid, more instinctive, as if his very soul was aligning with the power within the Pathway. His sword, once heavy and difficult to wield, now felt light as air, as though it had become an extension of his will.

With a final, decisive swing, Zhang Xin forced the woman to step back, her dark tendrils recoiling as her feet slid across the ground. The moment of hesitation was all Zhang Xin needed.

He pressed forward, his sword aimed directly at her chest.

The woman's eyes widened in disbelief, but she didn't flinch. Instead, she raised her hand, dark energy swirling around it in a desperate attempt to defend herself. But Zhang Xin was faster. In a blur of motion, he struck, his sword cutting through the dark energy like it was nothing, and his blade landed squarely on the woman's chest.

For a moment, there was silence.

The woman stared at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of shock and grudging respect. Then, she collapsed to her knees, her dark energy dissipating into the air like smoke.

Zhang Xin stood over her, his chest rising and falling with exertion, his sword still glowing with the remnants of his strike. "You fought well," he said, his voice calm but filled with the weight of the battle. "But it seems I'm the one who'll walk away."

The woman remained silent for a moment before she looked up at him, her eyes flickering with something that wasn't quite resignation, but understanding. "You've won this time, young warrior. But remember, the Pathway of Treasures is not so easily conquered. The challenges ahead will be even greater, and you will face foes far more dangerous than me."

Zhang Xin nodded, sheathing his sword. "I understand. But I won't back down. I'll face whatever comes next."

With a final glance at the woman, Zhang Xin turned and walked toward the temple, his heart pounding with adrenaline. He knew the path ahead would be fraught with danger, but he was ready. The treasure, the power, and the answers he sought were all within reach. All he had to do was continue forward.

Outside the temple, the air grew still, the oppressive weight of the Pathway lifting slightly as Zhang Xin entered. His senses remained sharp, his mind focused on the next step of his journey. He had won the battle, but the real challenge was yet to come.

As he stepped deeper into the Pathway, he could feel the presence of other cultivators. They were watching him, studying him, waiting for the right moment to strike. Zhang Xin didn't let his guard down, knowing that each moment in this place could be his last.

But for now, he was ready to face whatever awaited him in the depths of the Pathway of Treasures.
