Chapter 53 - Grinding for Affinity

After gradually beginning to realize the circumstances of Meita Village, Klein knew that what they had to offer was limited in terms of education.

He had been joking before, but he later found out that there were actually designated chamber pots inside of some outhouses on the far side of the village.

He was finding it more and more hopeless the more he learnt about the facilities of the village: a food/miscellaneous items storage building, a kitchen and dining area, a well, and a large farming space that took a large part of the village.

With all of these considered, the villagers mostly spent their time on patrol, hunting, training, or any other task such as being a caretaker or tending to the farm plots.

The tightknit community had almost no reason to worry about any other expenditure as they were most concerned about maintaining the status quo; as long as there was food and such, they could be at ease unless a ferocious meibeast attacked.

Klein had himself been spending his time training his control over the flow of the mofei and had made many a discover over the course of a few weeks.

Firstly, it should be noted that mofei was present in most— if not all— things around from the living plants to the soil underneath his feet.

While he had not had many opportunities to travel outside aside from an occasional visit to the school or a casual stroll with one of his parents, the things he did see he made sure to remember.

Secondly, it did not seem possible to manipulate the mofei unless in its detached ambient state, controlling the soil or drinking water remained a futile effort for Klein at least for now.

Thirdly, although they had yet to completely mature, Klein had managed to successfully merge the ambient mofei with the mei veins in his body after working out a miserable technique from a multitude of experiments.

Taking from the fact that it seemed that there was an innate difference between the amount of mofei each individual was able to utilize given their mastery over the particles, he deciphered that the reason for this lie in the growth period of the veins themselves.

Just like how there were apparent differences between malnourished and healthy muscles, if the mei veins a person possesses are supplied with enough mofei during their development, they would have a higher affinity towards their given element.

The higher the affinity, the greater ease a person would have when using the mofei, thus allowing them to cast faster and more precisely.

At first, when he tried absorbing the mofei, Klein had no idea what he was doing.

However, overtime, the more he interacted with it, the more he could understand the way the mofei existed naturally.

When he willed it, he could sense a connection between him and its intrinsic properties: the fire mofei radiated a faint heat, the water, a soft ripple, for the air it was more flowy than the others, and the earth was more rigid.

The better he got at controlling the mofei, the wilder his thoughts grew from trying to combine two or more elements to controlling multiple at the same time.

Once his manipulation reached a certain degree, Klein thought to himself, 'I wonder if I can't now absorb the mofei by channeling it directly into my body.'

He figured that since others like the caretaker could do it, there must be some way in which he could mimic the process. After all, she made it look easier than what he was doing.

Instead of fire mofei like she used, he chose to use air mofei due to the fact that it was relatively simple to use, and fire wasn't really his thing.

Despite how cool it looked, he knew the dangers of fire and the incredulous properties it possessed.

Just one spark could light a forest on fire in minutes depending on the

After allowing some air mofei to gracefully flow about until it neared his chest, a stream of silver gently brushed against Klein's bare chest.

He figured since the heart was what circulated everything around the body it was best to start around that area. Right he was, but what happened next, he could not have accounted for.

As the mofei seeped into his skin bit by bit, he was elated to find it working, but soon after, a piercing pain coursed throughout his body, primarily in the lungs.

It felt as if they were about to burst and the only thing keeping Klein from screaming in pain was the fact that there seemed to be no air in his lungs.

Desperately, he halted the process and allowed what little mofei there was inside of him to dissipate into who knows where, and so did the pain after a while.

He lay on the floor, writhing, before settling down and feeling light-headed.

He cursed himself for not leniently trying it out before pouring more of the silver air into his body, only to find that when he took a couple of weak breaths, the quality of the air seemed to be refined.

It was somewhat lighter than before and had a better taste to it?

'How could that happen,' he wondered, the pain in his lungs still lingering a bit.

He could tell that there was something inside him still transferring the mofei around in a systemized manner, unlike the brutish method he chose previously when he was still in a crib.

His mei veins were gradually changing to accommodate this new abundance and in turn, his affinity for air mofei grew stronger.

This was shown in the fact that when he now manipulated it, his hand waving in the air, a stronger wind blew around his room, picking up the dust with it.

There was no other explanation for it other than the fact that the mofei fueled his casting abilities in ways that could not be utilized until his mei veins were fully developed.

If he could use this to his advantage, he may have just discovered something never before seen on Planet Mamon.

Not wasting any time, Klein stopped wasting time and got back to it.

Needless to say, it hurt like hell...
