It was surprisingly quiet as I entered the abandoned clinic. Not like what I'd expect, considering the trashed state of it all. I held my spear tightly as I walked over to the door that led to the medicines. Yet no sign of zombies. I cautiously opened the door, and once again, it was empty. No sign of life, or undead life. I quietly got to the shelves, only to frown. Someone had obviously gotten here before me.
"I guess that explains why there isn't any zombies here." I muttered aloud to myself, glancing around for any left behind materials. Luckily for me, I had managed to find a few bandages, although a little worn down. Once I made sure that I got everything there was to get, I started heading out, accidentally leaving behind my only weapon and form of defense. Which I only realized when coming face to face with a hoard of zombies.
"Shit! Ah crap, Luki's gonna kill me." I exclaimed, quietly as to not draw attention to myself.
"I don't know who Luki is, but they might actually kill you if you get infected. I know a way out of here." A voice sighed from behind me. I looked at the said person in shock. It was another boy my age, but one I didn't recognize. I considered my options briefly, I could either try my luck with the hoard without my weapon, or I could go with the stranger who was offering to help me. I decided to go with the stranger.
"Alright fine, lead me out of here." I told him. He gestured for me to follow him, and led me to an attic space, which lead to a hole, which brought us to the deserted roof.
"We should be safe here, at least for a while. Oh, my name is Alastor." He introduced himself.
"You can call me Feral. Thanks for the help. I left my weapon in one of the rooms, and I'm afraid I couldn't quite go back for it." I sheepishly exclaimed, quite embarrassed at my mistake. He gave me a smile,
"Ah yes, it is quite a hassle when you don't have a weapon. I'm surprised you even survived this long if you made a silly mistake like that." He teased, before looking into the streets. "We should stay here for tonight, then we can move to a safer area." He concluded.
"I need to get back to my base..." I frowned. He gave me a sympathetic look,
"We can't go right now. Even if your base is still zombie-free by now." He explained, I somehow got the feeling he thought it was just me and Luki, trying to survive together.
"Unless there's another hole, the base should be safe still. Hopefully the others are alright." I sighed, getting ready for a long night. By the time the sun went down, I could see hoards of zombies in the streets, looking for some unsuspecting soul. I sighed once more and laid down, trying to get some sleep. What only felt like 5 minutes passed before Alastor shook me awake.
"Time to get up Feral. We got a long walk ahead of us." He yawned, as if he just woke up himself. I groaned but got up anyways, sore from the hard concrete of the roof. After I fully became aware, I noticed he was already packed, along with my previously forgotten spear laying innocently beside me. "I went back for your weapon as soon as the zombies left." Alastor explained when he noticed my curious look.
"Thanks." I replied before looking at the bushes on the ground, before shrugging and jumping off the roof into them. And like the respectable person I knew Alastor was, he freaked out.
"Feral! That was dangerous!" He hissed, understandably worried, before he climbed down himself. After he checked me over for injuries, he quickly glanced around, before deeming it safe enough to start leading me somewhere.
"Where are we going?" I asked, before being shushed.
"Don't be so loud. There might be zombies around, and I don't quite feel like protecting you against a hoard." He explained, which was quite honestly offending.
"I don't need your protection." I complained, but a little quieter than before. He rolled his eyes, not believing me for a second. After awhile, we finally reached our destination, a treehouse. After he made sure the coast was once again clear, he motioned for me to enter the treehouse, to which I did. Once we were finally situated, did he speak.
"Alright, we'll be safe here. There's lots of food and water, along with medical supplies. I'll help you find your way back to your base soon. But with the recent activity from zombies suddenly increasing, it's just not safe to be on the streets."
I sighed at his explanation. Because for all I missed the others, I too have seen the activity increasing within the last few weeks. No doubt because more and more people were starting to get more reckless.
"I doubt it's gonna go away soon. More people are getting reckless." I pointed out, "It's best if we start now, rather than later."
He gave me an amused look, which honestly confused me, as there was nothing amusing in this situation.
"Were you not also reckless this morning? Jumping off the roof of that clinic?" He teased, making me flush red with embarrassment.
"That's different, I know I can handle myself. The others out there, without a group, they don't have much luck surviving." I tried to explain, but before I could explain further, Alastor laughed.
"You certainly had it handled yesterday, without your weapon." He grinned. I rolled my eyes,
"That was an accident. I don't just leave my spear out for anyone to take." I muttered, clearly annoyed.
"We should head to the city." He said, surprising me, as it was off-topic, as well as a stupid idea.
