Mrs. Zahn was so furious that she also took off a ring and threw it to Scarlett Glenn, who Matilda Jenkins quickly picked up with delight.
The reason they didn't use a card to pay the debt was because, after all, they were the wives of rich people. If others found out that they had to use a card to settle their gambling debts from playing cards, wouldn't they feel ashamed?
