Chapter 28 - Teaching Emily

As Aaron, the girls, and the survivors carefully made their way through the war-torn streets of Osun State, their eyes couldn't help but take in the heartbreaking sight of devastation all around. Crumbled buildings, nature reclaiming the land, and shattered roads painted a grim picture of their world's current state.

Amidst the somber backdrop, a brash voice pierced the air, drawing everyone's attention. Squacky the parrot, perched on a withered tree branch, was deep into his storytelling, spinning a wildly imaginative tale for an audience of survivors. His theatrical performance had everyone's eyes and ears locked onto him.

"And there I was," Squacky declared with grandiosity, his emerald feathers puffing up with exaggerated pride, "one wing injured, facing not one, but two mighty foes—a dragon and a phoenix, mind you! They quaked in fear at the sight of my unparalleled majesty! The dragon begged for mercy, while the phoenix wept, realizing it stood no chance against the indomitable Squacky!"

The survivors in the front couldn't contain their disbelief, and one of them stumbled and fell at the sheer absurdity of Squacky's tale. Laughter rippled through the group as they helped their fallen comrade back to their feet. Isabella, never one to enjoy a bit of mischief, couldn't resist chiming in. "Squacky, your tales get taller every time you tell them. I can hardly keep up with your legendary exploits."

Audrey, added her playful commentary. "Oh, come now, Squacky. Next, you'll be claiming you invented the internet."

Squacky, taking the jesting in stride, beamed with pride, his feathery chest puffed out. "Well, I did! But I can't let you all miss out on the incredible chronicles of Squacky!"

Aaron, unable to suppress his laughter, decided to play along with the parrot's imaginative storytelling. "Alright, Squacky, we're convinced. You are without a doubt the most heroic parrot in history."

Squacky, now feeling like he had successfully secured Aaron's recognition, wore an expression of mock dignity. "Finally, someone who appreciates my greatness!"

Emily, suspended on Aaron's shoulder, was the sole believer in Squacky's tall tales. She couldn't help but gasped in disbelief and awe, her eyes gleaming with Amazement "Squacky, you're too much! Please, teach me how to be as awesome as you are."

Squacky, reveling in the adoration, extended one wing in a pretentious gesture. "Ah, young Emily, you have a long way to go before you reach the heights of Squacky's magnificence. But don't worry, I'll be your mentor on this extraordinary journey to greatness!"

With Squacky's comical stories adding a touch of humor to their arduous journey, the group continued to navigate the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Survivors took the opportunity to engage with zombies, honing their skills and no longer relying solely on Aaron and the girls. Squacky, now basking in Emily's admiration, played the role of an eccentric mentor, promising to teach her the secrets of his legendary status, much to everyone's amusement.

Over the course of the week, the survivors continued their journey through the transformed world, making significant progress in leveling up and honing their skills. During the day, they faced off against zombies and beasts, growing stronger with each encounter. At night, they found refuge within the spacious confines of the space ring, enjoying the comfort it offered amidst the harsh reality of their surroundings.

Within the space ring, Aaron had a private floor to himself, which also served as the girls' quarters, though they had separate rooms. Emily's room was closest to Aaron's, a choice that would lead to some memorable moments.

One evening, as the group settled in, Aaron couldn't resist the urge to indulge in some playful antics. With Squacky perched on his shoulder, Aaron mimicked the voice of a popular cartoon character, a wise-cracking parrot known for its mischievous charm.

"Arr, mateys!" Aaron exclaimed, his voice adopting a comically exaggerated accent. "I reckon we're off on a grand adventure today, ye landlubbers!"

Squacky, always up for a laugh, joined in, adding his own theatrics. "Aye, Captain Aaron! Full speed ahead to the treasure!"

Amidst fits of laughter from both the survivors and Emily's delighted giggles, Aaron, Emily, and Squacky embarked on their own whimsical cartoon-like journey, complete with treasure maps, imaginary pirate ships, and ridiculous shenanigans.

Margaret, Emily's mother, couldn't help but join in on the fun. "I'll be the ship's cook, and I've got a pot of imaginary stew brewing!" she exclaimed, playing along with the zany adventure.

Sometime later Emily stood with Aaron in the small clearing outside a collapsed building. She clutched the skill tablet she had acquired earlier, eagerly awaiting his guidance. Aaron, adopting the role of an older brother, was ready to explain the new ability to her.

"Alright, Emily," Aaron began with a warm smile, "let's talk about this special ability you've got here. It's called Astral Energy Reflection, and it's all about keeping you safe."

Emily's eyes shimmered with a hint of admiration, but her innocence kept her feelings well hidden.

"Astral Projection," Aaron continued, "is the first part. It's like sending your spirit out of your body temporarily, making you invisible and untouchable. So, when you're in this state, you're completely safe from physical harm."

Emily nodded, hanging on to his every word.

"Now," Aaron said gently, "the second part is Energy Reflection. It's about absorbing energy attacks, like magic or fire, and then sending that energy back at whoever attacked you. So, they end up hurting themselves instead of you."

Emily watched in rapt attention, eager to grasp this new skill.

"And," Aaron added, "you can even create illusionary copies of yourself to confuse your enemies. These copies look so real that your foes won't know where to attack, providing you with even more protection."

Emily beamed, ready to put this newfound knowledge into practice. Her crush on Aaron was evident, but it remained innocent and sweet, something Aaron hadn't yet noticed.

"So, Emily," Aaron concluded, "With this power, you'll be able to defend yourself without even having to engage in direct combat. Just remember that it takes practice, but I'm confident that you'll get the hang of it."

With Aaron's guidance, Emily faced an injured level 5 zombie, ready to test her new ability. She looked up to him with admiration and a touch of a childish crush, all while focusing on mastering her newfound skill.

Emily stood a few feet away from the injured level 5 zombie. She took a deep breath, remembering Aaron's instructions. Astral Energy Reflection, she thought, determined to make her protector proud.

She closed her eyes and concentrated, projecting her astral form out of her physical body. As she did, the world around her seemed to blur. Emily's body became transparent and ethereal, invisible to the zombie.

The injured zombie, sensing her presence, stumbled forward with a menacing growl. Emily's heart raced, but she remembered Aaron's assurance that she was safe in this state.

"Focus, Emily," Aaron's voice echoed in her mind, as if he were right beside her. "Now, feel the energy. Let it flow."

Emily concentrated on the zombie's approaching energy, sensing its malevolent intent. She raised her spectral hand and intercepted the zombie's attack, absorbing its dark energy.

In an instant, she felt a surge of power coursing through her astral form. Aaron's guidance became her anchor as she redirected the absorbed energy back at the zombie. The creature let out a screech of pain as its own attack hit it square in the chest.

The injured zombie staggered backward, dazed and weakened by the unexpected counterattack. Emily's illusionary copies began to materialize around her, disorienting the creature further.

Confusion clouded the zombie's eyes as it flailed at the illusory figures, unable to distinguish the real Emily from the decoys. Emily knew that her astral form was still safe from harm.

"Great job, Emily!" Aaron's voice echoed in her thoughts. "Now, maintain your focus and keep the pressure on."

With Aaron's guidance and her newfound abilities, Emily continued to manipulate the energy around her, frustrating the zombie's attempts to strike her. She was, in essence, untouchable.

As the minutes passed, Emily's confidence grew. She realized that she had the power to protect herself and those she cared about. With every encounter, she honed her skills, thanks to Aaron's patient guidance.

In the end, the injured level 5 zombie lay defeated on the ground, unable to comprehend the mystifying force that had thwarted it. Emily returned to her physical body, feeling a sense of accomplishment and gratitude toward her mentor, Aaron.

She looked over at him, her admiration for him growing stronger with each passing day.
