Chapter 13 - 13 - Claws and Swords

Copper had to strain his eyes to make out the features of the young human girl whose hands shook as she held a sword forged for a man twice her size and strength. The girl's mother had fainted at the edge of the clearing Copper was summoned to. The two paced circles of the clearing, the girl was eyeing Copper up and down her eyes commonly returning to the scars at the bottom of his chest.

The girl pointed her long sword at Copper nodding in agreement to terms Copper had set.

The girl rushed at Copper. She dipped and weaved right as she was about to reach him and slashed downwards. The girl's skill caught Copper a bit off guard, it seemed he actually had to put up a strong fight. Copper parried the girl's blow with his claws and the blade clashed against the claws letting out a ring of metal on metal. Lenny was quick to try an uppercut slash at Copper attempting to catch him from stem all the way to stern.

Copper slid to the right just enough for Lenny's blade to pass his face by a hair's breath.

Not letting the girl's small size trick him again Copper quickly sheathed his claws, balling his fists, punching Lenny just below her chest, knocking the breath out of Lenny stunning her.

The fight had taken them both dangerously close to the edge of the clearing, Coppers back was nearly against a boulder.

Lenny, still slow and grasping for her breath back Copper took the opportunity for another attack. He swung his leg into Lenny's gut, doubling her over. Copper followed that up with a quick hit to Lenny's jaw.

Letting his adrenaline carry him Copper launched himself off the boulder behind him, sliding behind Lenny. Copper wrapped his arms around Lenny and tossed her across the small clearing.

Lenny skidded and tumbled across the clearing, she was stopped by the trunk of a tree. A groan escaped her lips, her adrenaline dwindling and the pain from the fight setting in.

Lenny looked up her eyes opened with surprise.

As Copper let go of Lenny, he had planted both hands on the ground. Copper sprang off his hands, throwing himself into a quick back spring, followed by another, another and another to build momentum. When Copper was almost to Lenny, he bounded off the ground and threw himself into a spin he knew even Algiz would have been jealous of.

Just as Copper's foot was about to collide with her head Lenny rolled to the side. Copper's leg slammed into the ground with his knee and shin in the dirt sending earth through the air.

Seeing Lenny doge, on a normal occasion he would have let his opponent stand up, that was the proper thing to do even in the most foul of pit fights. But he wasn't gonna let any Oakman get away from a fight with him again.

With his inhuman speed, while earth was still hanging mid air, Copper pulled Lenny's sword from her loose grip and glided to his feet.

Lenny looked up at him, their eyes met as Lenny's sword was plunged into her chest. A sharp pain shot through Copper's chest as his young opponent's life dropped from her eyes like a puppet whose strings were cut.

Copper walked over to unconscious Mary Oakman debating taking her life, but he decided to simply go on his way. Taking one life was bad enough for today.

Walking away from the clearing, sword dragging in the dirt Copper looked at his hands and noticed one of his claws bleeding.

"Dammit! I broke a claw, gotta get my gauntlets back." Copper exclaimed in frustration, as he headed off deeper into the woods, limping slightly.
