Chapter 27 - CHAPTER 26. EPHIRIA

The Aves approached at an alarming speed. Their beaks suddenly looked sharper than before. They screeched as if rejoicing in the inevitable victory. It was about to begin. Aquil didn't slow down. His focus was on the ship. A plan barely ripened in my mind and before I knew it, I said, "I need you to get me close enough to one of those birds." Carter asked, "Close enough to do what." I said, "You'll find out." To be honest, even I wasn't sure. Aquil obliged. He waited until the bird swarmed us.

He froze, made an aerial flip, and dived down. I let go mid-flip and landed on one of the Aves. I hit the metal back with a big painful bang. The Aves screeched. It grabbed the attention of the rest. Great I had become the center of attention, a narcissistic girl's dream. The Aves I was on erupted into a crazy flight. It twisted and swirled but I refused to budge.

It changed its plans. It flew vertically at lightning speed. So you calling in favor of your friend Gravity. The other Aves joined the cause. They tried to peck multiple times. I had to hold on tight at the same time play deadly beak. The air got thinner. My breathing became uneven. Thus was its plan. To use my organic life against me.

I needed to think quickly. I activated my cube with one hand. I thrust my light into the khopesh blade. It glowed with fiery heat. One thing I liked about gold was it was a good conductor of heat. I struck the blade into its chest. It cried with a screech so ugly glass would crack. An Aves avenged. It swathed my leg. I groaned as drops of red flowed out.

I used the pain as my fuel to continue cutting through the chest. The Aves cried louder. My energy was depleting quickly. My vision blurred. For once, I appreciated trees. My body shivered in the cold breeze. My wound didn't make it any better. Almost there. Another bird swathed my other leg. Luckily both weren't deep. I wanted to scream. I felt my blade go through. I hit the sphere inside. It made a sparking sound like a computer dropped in water. The energy waves that surrounded it disappeared.

It exploded. The shock wave thrust into the air. The energy embraced me in a warm hug. Thanks to my luxis blood, it did me no damage. But the nuts took the chance to compensate. I descended quicker than a falcon. Had they lost me? Had they got confused about where I was? My body was too in shock to scream. Aquil grabbed me in his talons. Carter said, "That was crazy. Are you sure you don't need a suicidal psychiatrist?"

I brushed him off. Aquil released me onto the ship. Carter jumped down next to me. Aquil descended into the skies below. Magnus wrinkled his nose, "You killed my birds. I always give hybrids a quick painless death and never take joy in it but you, I will enjoy killing you." He widened his arms as if hugging the air. The waves emitted out of them. Gears, nuts, and screws gathered on his arms. They shifted into a pair of long metallic snakes and no, I didn't mean trains.

The snakes hissed as they attacked me. I could barely stand up without a winch let alone run. Carter could see that. He shoved me right before the snake gulped me. He took my place. The snake swallowed him whole.

I shouted, "CARTER" This is bad. I'm immobile. My partner has been captured. My body is still recovering from the fight with the Aves. I needed to act quickly but wisely. What can I use as leverage? The storm. What storm? It sounds familiar but… Magnus smiled, "Don't worry. You're next in line."

That smile sent a chill down my spine. Focus. A storm that even mostri fear. Obscurum. The storm of the abyss. I said in a voice I hope was confident, "You need help with the obscurum, don't you?" He said, "I already told you. I can manage on my own." I teased, "Metal against a petrifying storm. That sounds like a great idea. Sure, will conduct the lightning to give a faster death." He grumbled, "I will have you know that I have more than that." I said, "You need imperial light to get through the storm. Luckily for you, I have that." He said, "Already have that in my machine." I said, "Here I thought engineers were smart since they always carry around a backup. I guess stereotyping has always been a fatal flaw of mine."

He growled, "I'm not stupid. Maybe you're right. It is unwise of me to not carry a backup. Still, that doesn't make you that backup. Can't have a backup who is just waiting to kill once I close my eyes." I said, "I would never. Even if I dared, can't risk the death of my friend." I pointed at the snake that had Carter. He gave me a smug look after realizing his leverage, "I will need your weapon. Just in case."

I held my cube in my hand. I pushed light into it. I threw it at him. He caught it and laughed. He examined it to make sure I hadn't scammed him. He brought it close to his eye. Now. The cube exploded. It was a major explosion but I hoped it was effective. The sparking sound echoed. He looked furious, "You expected to kill me." I said, "Your sphere will."

He noticed his ticking brain bomb. The snakes broke down. Carter surfaced from the mechanical parts. He said, "Thanks" Magnus burst into maniacal laughter, "Fool, I will explode and kill us all." I said, "Sorry to say but that my friend is not part of my plan." I whistled as loudly as possible.

Aquil emerged. I pointed at Magnus and the Aquil knew what to do. Carter said, "Aquil won't die with him." I smirked, "Who said he has to?" Aquil raged on. He flew towards Magnus. The waves emitted out of him. They turned and swept Magnus off the ship with a deadly thrust.

Magnus exploded in midair. Once a villainous robot but now reduced to public fireworks. I grabbed a chicha vile from my pocket and drank some. The effects will soon come in. My attention turned toward a cage of unconscious people. Carter ordered Aquil to transport the cage back on land. I looked on with a sense of envy toward the rescued people. At least they would be safe from now on. Carter and I on the other hand were about to go on a suicide mission.

The storm was a place known as Doomsday's Hybrid Cemetery. Die one get two graves free. And yet that was our beautiful journey to salvation. A thought came into my mind but I quickly surpassed it. I pushed it deep down but it still resurfaced. We're going die.
