Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Empusa

I was wide eyed as I saw that hood come off. This was certainly not something I had ever anticipated in my lifetime. El was a girl, and not just any girl, a pretty one. It was like looking at a goddess. And trust me when I say that her beauty was overwhelming, because I would naturally not even look the way of any girl, not to talk of giving a compliment to any one of them.

I don't know how long I stood there gawking, but I got to remember where I was the hard way. I stood hypnotized by this beauty in front of me for a while until I felt something pierce me from side to side. I looked down at my stomach and saw The Sword of The Nether inserted inside. The horror I felt when I recalled what the sword did to those it killed caused me to immediately pull it out, even when I was aware that pulling it out would kill me faster. My passive skill Dauntless that was supposed to help me think much clearer when facing opponents was nowhere to be found. Everything in my mind was spinning, I couldn't get ahold of a single thought. That's when it happened.

My hands began to move without me controlling them. They placed themselves a little above my wound and a dim light shone from them, causing me to feel a soothing relief that calmed my mind. I was soon able to think clearly again once my injury was healed, but the same couldn't be said for all those who were watching the match. Even El had her mouth opened in shock, and I was a bit stunned as well, but not for the reason everyone thought.

After my wound was healed, a voice sounded in my head. It was a familiar voice that I had revered and at the same time feared to hear.

Jason, if I have to aave your life every single time, I dont know what would become of you. You must get stronger. Stronger so you can protect yourself, that is why I granted you access to the system. Do not let my efforts go to waste. Do not fail me.

I knew this voice clearly. Even hearing it in my sleep, I would still be able to recognize it. This was because the voice was the same person who had saved me that last time, and as I had guessed before it was just confirmed right now, the same person who had granted me the system. It was that same person I had made a deal with to give my soul, who had saved my life and brought me back in time twelve years.

'Thank you.' I silently prayed, unknowing that he could hear such prayers.

To thank me yet, you must become a truly strong person. To do that, first you must defeat this Empusa.

'Empusa? What is that?'

That is a story for another day. Now, show me I am not wasting my time.

And so a spark ignited in me. I lurched at El with the sword embedded in my enclosed fist, tightened around the hilt. My speed exploded this time around. It seemed as I was getting better used to my stats., I would also be better equipped to deal with any obstacles that came in front of me.

I swung that beautiful blade at the neck of this so called Empusa. Perhaps that mysterious helper of mine would prefer to explain what that meant later on. But right now, I had a deathmatch to win.

The sword was blocked directly with her hand. No, not her hand. There was a slim layer of ice covering the surface of her hand. It may have been slim, but I could tell it's power was frightening for it to be able to block such a hit from me. This transaction was still going on in midair when I suddenly released my grip on the sword, forcing her to lose her balance and tilt towards her left side.

Meanwhile, as I was in the air, I spun a bit and let my legs come down to touch the ground as I unleashed all the power I could muster into a single punch. The ground cracked under El as my punch landed, a clean hit. Dust sprayed everywhere as well, preventing me from monitoring her current state. I actually felt bad punching her, the prettiest I had ever seen and here I was, attempting to kill her.

I quickly withdrew and grabbed the sword as I did, acting cautious to prevent any more harm befalling to me.

Sherby immediately ran into the clearing, shouting at me. "Not so hard, Jace! You shouldn't get her killed. You know the rules."

"Relax. I'm fine." El said. My heart sighed in relief upon hearing this." I can still fight, so go back and stay back." My heart leaped this time. If she was still capable of fighting even after that, then this fight would not be anything considered easy.

I gripped my sword forcefully and stared at the dust, waiting for it to calm. I already promised she would have whatever she asked if I was defeated. What if she wanted my life? I would actually die, was that it? No way I would accept that. I would fight with my last breath.

I took a look at the sword in my hand and recalled something interesting. I smiled at this and held the hilt of the sword with both hands, closing my eyes as I did so. I felt the energy inside my body begin to circulate as I called on it from within.

Before I had come back in time, I had learned the use of Light magic, practiced it in combat even. The last time, I never even had a blade. I had to create one by coagulating the magic essence in my body to form the shape of a sword.

This time I figured I could do the same, except with a blade already there. Same concept, different practice. I had my eyes closed for a few seconds before I opened them. The Sword of The Nether was currently brimming with Light. And this time, I would not lose this fight.
