Chapter 4 - Billie

As the truck rumbles to a stop in front of the school, I cringe at the building. My old self would have probably liked the victorian style with dead trees scattered around, but I am so over this.

I just want to be back at my old school in Chicago, hanging out with cool people. Not here.

Mom kills the engine, turning around to face us. " Okay, I love you guys, but get out! Time for school. "

Emma does as she is told, walking towards the school building without a word - that girl's got guts. Trevor and I reluctantly drop down from the car, watching as mom waves us goodbye, heading for work.

So, turns out that workers- pay-no-tuition-fee was right and mom forced us to write the exams. Since we're all so brilliant, we actually got in.

" Good luck Trevor. "

" You need more luck than I do. " He walks away, his huge bag sagging his shoulders.

I grip the hem of my blazer, following after my brother. The moment they mailed me my uniform was the same moment I wanted to mail it back. Mine was way too big and the skirt? It was shapeless and dangled around my knees.

Just to add class, I wore a black leggings this morning. Atleast it gives it some style.

After meeting with the administrator, she gives me my locker key, and a school guidance book, which happens to have a map. All I have to do, is look for class 11-B.

I breath out in relief when I find a classroom door with the word 11-B. I peek through the binder, seeing a bunch of kids chat around with each other.

It feels too intimate for me, this people have practically been together since they were little and I'll just be the weird new girl from Chicago, whose uniform is apparently too big for her.

I can't do this.

Swirling around, I run smack into someone's chest and he stumbles back, catching himself at the last moment. Unfortunately, his school bag drops, a designer one at that.

I drop down quickly to grab it, getting back up and he snatches it from my grip, dusting away imaginary dirt.

" I'm so sorry. "

" No worries. I wasn't looking either, " he says with a New York accent. He looks up from his bag and my eyes bulges at his appearance.

Damn,he is hot. If I dated him back in Chicago, I'd definitely be popular in school. He blinks at me confusedly, behind dark strands of hair that flops over his eyes.

" Bye. " And he sidesteps me, walking into the classroom.

I follow closely behind, hoping his presence will distract the rest from mine, even if it's just for today. Apparently, it's a waste of time.

People aren't even looking at us, they're either looking at their phones, or seriously discussing with one another.

I have to admit, my pride is hurt. Am I not interesting enough to grab attention? Well, aren't they just rude.

I take an empty seat beside Lizzie Todd, who's just seating on her chair like a robot, staring into space.

The boy I bumped into earlier meets a chubby girl at the front and collects a file, leaving the class abruptly. No one still notices me.

The door bursts open and a lanky man in brown suit enters, following him is a not-so-lanky man in a uniform. He must be a sheriff. Everyone runs to their respective seats and luckily for me, no one claims my seat.

" Sorry for barging here unannounced kids, but I'd like to borrow one of your classmate. Lizzie? Can you please follow me to the station? You are hereby declared a suspect in Miss Nicole's death. "

The whole class gasps, Lizzie looks at the sheriff in shock and folks, that's when I decided I just might like it here in La Salle County afterall.
