#Chapter Forty-One
"Not long now!" the reporter proclaimed. "We'll find out the results of the trial soon!" Kitty's heart thundered in her ears as she waited for the news. "We have it!" She was at the edge of her seat now.
Commercials appeared on the screen.
She flung the remote control at the screen and it struck with a loud crack. She shot to her feet, panicking at the stupid thing she just did but instantly relieved when she saw that the TV was alright.
Why the hell did her mother not want her to attend the trials anyway? She gave some stupid reason for why she wanted her to stay at home and if she was in court now, she would've already known the answer. Time dragged on as more and more commercials appeared on the screen, until finally the reporter showed up again.
"So we have the results of the trial!" the reporter said and paused.
"God, why!" Kitty yelled.
"James has been acquitted!"
Kitty's mouth fell open. What the fuck?! He was acquitted? He fucked a minor and was acquitted?! What's wrong with the world? She looked to her side for the remote control to hurl it towards the TV but realised she already did that.
After some time passed, her father eventually came home, and it took one look at him to know that he did not want to talk about Melanie with her, so she remained silent. The first time he left the house, however, he left it for Melanie.
It was then that Kitty slowly realised that she was getting nowhere with Melanie or her father, so she decided to make another stupid mistake. She broke into her father's office again.
She walked around, and studied the surroundings. There was nothing of interest to her and she knew that the police probably already took most of the stuff that shed light on the case. She was about to leave when a flash of light interrupted her vision.
She stepped back and stepped forward again. But there was no more flash. She adjusted her position and walked to and fro.
Another flash.
She froze where she was standing. The flash came from a portrait that was hanging on the only wall without a shelf against it. She walked over and ran her fingers along the edge. Then she pulled. The painting gave way and it puffed open, revealing a safe.
She hovered her fingers over it, and considered what her father would want for a password. She keyed in Melanie's birthday and it came back with an error. So she keyed in his birthday and another error message popped up. She put her birthday in and that was when the safe unlocked for her.
But what she found inside gave her the shock of her life.
