As I slowly regained consciousness, I heard a loud voice. The voice seemed familiar, yet unfamiliar and terse. It naturally made my body quiver.
"How could you be so impertinent? I should've kept the unholy witch away from you. You've become just as Impervious as her." The tirade continued,
"If I ever see you with her again Daunt Tyrell, I will make sure you regret it."
My gaze turned towards him, all I could see were his scars, bleeding, even the ones that no one might have seen before; I could see them all. Tears rolled down my cheeks, as I lost control of my heavy eyelids and found myself flooded with memories of my past. The time I was Scarlett Wattson and not Esmeray Windsor.
I was a doctor by profession, one of the youngest surgeons in the hospital. I don't mean to boast, but I had the privilege of working at the most prestigious hospital in the capital city. Apart from that, I was very much into herbs. It has always piqued my curiosity how people in ancient times managed to treat illnesses using only herbs and without the aid of modern technology. How "wild" is that. Bad puns aside, I was a *qtuber, uploading educational videos and vlogs from time to time was a hobby. Since it was quite popular, it wasn't unpredictable that I had almost no privacy.
Suddenly, the memories of that day started to cloud my mind. I was working an extra shift for someone, when my gaze turned towards the news being played on the television regarding the earthquake measuring 6.7 on richter scale and its devastating aftermath that had occurred the day before. Since the epicentre was nearby, we had felt some tremors too, but there wasn't any noticeable damage. A few surgeons were called in from our hospital at the earthquake site and I had been assigned to take control back here. The number of patients had increased as flu had spread through the residences and the season was changing. While I was getting done with some paperwork, my archnemesis, Kara came rushing to me. She had quite a different expression than her usual resting face. She was visibly worried. But why? While it seemed like she was gathering her thoughts and some courage to talk, suddenly another nurse rushed in and spoke in a trembling voice, "your parents were admitted into our hospital branch, in the city." It all clicked; Kara's expressions and behaviour and the conversation I had with my mother the day before. My parents had left for business. "Were they in too? Where would they be right now . . ." My ears started ringing and my mind went blank. I didn't realize when I started crying and screaming and fell to the floor. I didn't remember losing consciousness.
When I woke up, Kara, the person I had least expected to be there was taking care of me. It only made me feel even more anxious and uneasy. She told me I had a panic attack and that I had fainted. Her face still had the same expression as it was when she had entered the room.
As soon as I regained consciousness, I asked her in a dull voice," Where are my parents?" Her expression turned even worse.
I couldn't stand the sight of her and yelled, "Tell me!" She asked me to calm down, her eyes wet. Like I could calm down right now; after all that had happened with my brother, my parents were my only family.
"I am their only daughter and they are my only family. Tell me, right now!", I said.
She replied, "They were found during a rescue mission. Their condition was bad. Coincidentally, they were admitted in the city branch of our hospital right away. Liz obviously recognized them. She told us that they were trying their best, 2 hours ago, but…..", after a moment of pause, she continued.
"They couldn't save them. They had several major injuries."
"Oh! Now I understand that expression of yours." She looked confused.
"You pity me, don't you?" I asked her to leave and covered my face.
"I couldn't save them" was the only thing flooding my mind, as the tears dried up and I felt the loneliness and emptiness gripping my heart.
"I have lost everything dear to me." I walked to the window and finally wanted to let myself get crushed under the weight of all the people that had left me, my self guilt, and hate.
Suddenly, someone flung opened the door and rushed in , "You still have something that no one can take from you!" I looked at him and he continued.
"Come down first, will you?" while extending his right hand towards me.
