Chapter 149 - Transformations

Nathan did not have much time to study the spider because it lowered its body slightly and threw a web thread. Nathan dodged without letting the thread hit him, unaware of its properties.

He quickly summoned Adam's black fang, which was his only weapon after Mary had destroyed his katana.

Nathan noticed a slight glint of intelligence in the spider's eyes as he realized that the spider quickly pointed at the dagger in his hand instead of aiming at him, with the intention of taking his only weapon.

'Does he know that Adam's fang is dangerous?' Nathan thought with concern, realizing that the spider was no ordinary calamity.

The spider threw several more threads that Nathan nimbly dodged, but these began to accumulate on the ground. They created an improvised spider's web, which slightly hindered Nathan's movements.

Suddenly there was a sharp pain in his neck, and he almost lost his balance again, which the spider took advantage of to launch itself at him, aggressively exposing its long fangs as long as Nathan's finger.

Nathan flowed more essence into his neck to further delay the effect of the poison while dodging to the side and counterattacking.

The spider's body passed by his side, but when he was about to stab it, it transformed in less than a second. Only this time it transformed into a snake, causing Nathan to smith his attack.

The calamity now transformed into a snake again began to transform and two pairs of legs formed from its body, turning into a black lizard with an exoskeleton that covered most of its body, and more importantly all of its vital organs.

Pushing itself against the wall, the lizard jumped towards Nathan and landed on his left arm. Nathan had slightly lost mobility in that part of his body because of the poison, so he could not prevent the calamity from clinging to his arm.

This one quickly transformed again into another, larger and more robust type of snake and wrapped itself around Nathan's arm with enough force to shatter the arm of a normal human.

"I already lost an arm today, I don't plan on repeating that!" Nathan twisted his grip on Adan's fang and tried to stab the snake. However, the snake's skin was tougher than his attack and Adan's fang bounced off.

Nathan could still flow more essence into the black fang, but that was not his goal. Instead, he continued to slash at the calamity. None of his attacks managed to penetrate the snake's skin, but with each strike Nathan felt the calamity's grip on his arm weaken.

Nathan smiled, but the sweat soaking his face revealed how bad he was having a hard time. The calamity as such was not very powerful, maybe first rank third category, second rank first category at best. The only problem was the poison that kept spreading through his body via his veins.

Nathan could not see his own neck, but Amelia could, and she could see that his skin was turning a greenish color.

But Nathan ignored the weakness that was beginning to take hold of him and continued to strike the calamity. The snake began to feel a sense of danger rising in his mind.

No matter how much intelligence it had, it could not comprehend what was happening to it. But its instincts warned it that its life was in danger, and it had to escape as soon as possible.

The snake opted to transform itself into a smaller snake. Less robust but faster. It quickly untangled itself from Nathan's arm and threw itself to the ground before it sped toward the door that led to the stairs.

Nathan did not think twice and threw the black Adan's fang, calculating where the calamity was going to pass. The snake's instinct caused it to move slightly to the side, avoiding Adan's fang. That second was enough for Nathan to summon Adan's white fang as his only available weapon and jump toward the snake.

The snake did not have time to transform again when Adan's white fang hit the ground right next to its head. Momentarily stunned as to why its life was not over, the calamity was caught in Nathan's bare hands.

Gasping from the poison, Nathan held the snake by the head and with the other hand by the tail. Preventing it from biting or striking him.

"I know you can understand me... or at least understand my intentions" Nathan gasped but did not loosen his grip. "You must have the cure for your poison, give it to me and I'll let you go"

The calamity hissed, somehow understanding Nathan. It could still transform, but he knew that the moment Nathan noticed he was transforming, he would break him in two.

"We both want to live, you just have to heal me... as easy as that" Nathan repeated, to which the calamity hissed again.

After a few seconds, Nathan noticed how the calamity's resistance diminished. This indicated to him that the calamity had understood him and was ready to accept the deal.

Nathan sighed silently. 'You can really understand me... it's not a normal calamity' He took a second to look around the room again and frowned. 'What were you keeping in here, old man?'
