Further into the city, the streets were filled with tents to help citizens who had been injured. The hospitals were full and no longer had the capacity to help more people.
Everything was in chaos and with Khan's attack and the second wave of the cataclysm, the government was simply insufficient and incapable to help everyone.
Nathan walked through the makeshift camp in the middle of the city with a serious and somber look on his face.
'What good did it do them?'
Some people were kneeling in front of corpses of people who had succumbed to calamities, while others had wounds that would scar them for life.
Nathan was used to blood and death, but seeing such suffering accumulated in one place affected him.
'These people have nothing to do with the conflict between Khan and the government... yet they are the ones who are affected the most' Nathan thought with annoyance as he continued to explore the camp.
While he was lost in thought, suddenly a boy, no more than ten years old, ran in front of him, causing him to stop abruptly.
Nathan watched the boy continue running through the camp until he came to a woman who was sitting with a cast on her arm and a bandage stained with blood on her head.
The boy was worried about the woman who appeared to be his mother, but she was trying hard to smile to make the boy not feel worried.
Looking at the mother and son duo, he felt a knot in his heart.
'Everything... everything is wrong'
Nathan raised his head and looked up at the sky, then covered his face in annoyance.
'This shouldn't happen, not today, not ever'
Thinking that, Nathan sighed, lowered his hand, and continued walking through the camp.
'Did he remind you of you?' Amelia asked him a couple of minutes after his encounter with the boy and his mother.
Nathan scoffed slightly at Amelia's comment.
'Not really... what the boy is going through now might be a little traumatic for him, but at least he has someone's support'
Nathan shrugged.
'He's just about the same age as I was at the time'
No sooner had he thought that than two men walked past him speaking a strange language he couldn't understand.
Nathan looked at the men with a frown, sensing something strange, but seeing them wounded and with somewhat dark expressions, he ignored them, thinking of them as tourists who had been affected by the repeated wave of calamities.
'Capture...?' Amelia whispered a few words and Nathan stopped when he heard her.
'Is something wrong?'
'No... it's nothing, it's just that I thought I understood something they were saying'
Nathan remained silent and laughed with some amusement.
'When did you learn a new language?'
Amelia hesitated for a couple of seconds.
'...I didn't'
Nathan frowned slightly not understanding Amelia, then froze completely.
'Amelia... How many languages do you speak?'
Amelia didn't think more than a couple of seconds before speaking.
'Yours and my homeland's... wait, don't you think...'
'Yes, they must be from your world...'
Without hesitation, Nathan quickly turned and looked around.
'Shit, where did they go?'
The two men had suddenly disappeared into the crowd and Nathan couldn't see them anywhere, so he quickly started back the way he had come to look for them.
'What do you think they're doing here?' Amelia asked.
'I don't know, they looked really wounded but maybe they were just faking their injuries to infiltrate'
Nathan continued to search the camp for a couple of minutes but no matter how hard he looked or asked for these two men he couldn't find them.
Finally he stopped behind a tent and tapped on a lamp post in frustration.
'Where the fuck did they go?! they can't just disappear like that!'
'If you want I can materialize and watch from above' Amelia suggested, to which Nathan shook his head.
'No, you'd draw too much attention'
Knowing that looking for them wouldn't find them, Nathan began to think of other ways to find them, it was then that he heard a scream that startled him.
'Please don't let it be nothing...'
Quickly, he began to run in the direction of the scream, dodging the crowd, until he finally had to stop when he found that dozens of people were crowded in one place.
Nathan pushed his way through the crowd and tried to get to the front to see what was going on. When he finally reached the front, he frowned when he saw a man who had fallen into a crack that had suddenly formed in the ground.
Both of his legs were caught in the crack, and it looked like he was in a lot of pain from his facial expressions.
'Is it normal to have cracks like this in the streets?' Amelia asked.
'No... we are in a geographical area where earthquakes are not frequent, so it's rare to see a crack like that, I also didn't feel any tremors or anything'
Suddenly from the crowd appeared two policemen who approached the man to help him.
'I can only think that there's something underneath---'
"AAAHGGGGGG! MY LEGS!"
Not only Nathan but everyone gathered there was startled by the man's sudden cry.
"TAKE ME OUT! SOMETHING'S BITING ME!"
Nathan frowned at the man's words, at the same time, both policemen wasted no more time and started to pull the man holding him by the men.
A couple of seconds later, they managed to free the man, then the hysteria of the crowd began.
Screams of terror and dread began to echo through the place as everyone began to flee in terror while Nathan stood wide-eyed in shock at what he was seeing.
'What the hell?'
'W-what can that do?' Amelia said with some fear in her voice.
The man's legs were completely destroyed, as if something had chewed him to the bone.
The man had fainted as soon as he saw his legs and the policemen had soon called for reinforcements.
Nathan clicked his tongue and held his nose at the smell that suddenly spread through the camp.
'They came through the sewers!'
