A couple of minutes passed since the police had freed the man whose legs were a mess, yet nothing came out of the cracks in the floor that connected directly to the sewers.
'Was I wrong?'
Nathan massaged his chin as he watched the crack in the floor from afar.
'I don't think so... What else could that do to the man's legs?' Amelia answered him.
Nathan nodded and looked around.
Rumors of what had happened to the man had spread like wildfire within minutes and now the whole camp was in complete disarray with people who simply weren't able to bear the thought that beneath them were who knows how many calamities.
More than the communal hysteria, Nathan was annoyed that he hadn't been able to find the two men.
'Did they have anything to do with it?'
Grunting with annoyance not knowing what was really going on, Nathan sighed and continued to watch the crack, then his gaze shifted to the man who was still passed out and the two policemen who had confused expressions on their faces.
Suddenly Nathan understood that something had happened.
'Where's the backup?'
There was no sign of any more police or government agents arriving to cordon off the area, which was odd, considering the camp was heavily guarded.
Suddenly, he heard something break and Nathan focus again on the crack, then watched as it began to collapse, making the hole that connected to the sewers larger.
'At that size a person can already get in...'
'You don't intend to go in or do you?' Amelia asked without understanding what he was planning.
Nathan snorted.
'Of course not, it would be suicide to go down there without knowing what calamities there are'
Feeling a sudden vibration in his pocket, Nathan momentarily stopped worrying about the hole in the floor and picked up his smartphone.
'Now what--?'
Nathan froze as he saw the notification that had arrived on his smartphone, then looked around paranoid to see if anyone was watching him.
Seeing that no one was noticing him, Nathan turned away from the main street and hid behind a tent.
'Shit, that was quicker than I thought. Now it looks like I'm in trouble'
A light chuckle came out of his mouth, to which Amelia didn't know how to react to seeing his indifference.
'Now you're might be considered a traitor and you're laughing?'
Nathan shook his head slightly.
'I already knew what I was in for the moment I saved my sister from dying at the hands of Lloyd's asshole... I guess it was a good time to leave Khan'
Nathan looked back at his phone screen and reread the message that had arrived from Khan.
'Any Khan member who goes against our ideals is considered a traitor'
Before he could finish reading, his phone suddenly turn off out of nowhere and without thinking Nathan broke it and threw it to the ground before stepping on it.
'Surely they know I'm here... we'd better get out of here fast'
Amelia nodded at his words and waited for Nathan to decide what to do.
Nathan walked back to the main street and peeked slightly behind the tent and noticed the large hole in the ground. Then he decided to go in the opposite direction.
'Aren't you going to look for the men?' Amelia asked to which Nathan then denied.
'It's like looking for a needle in a haystack... besides now I'm being searched too'
'...The message only mentions possible traitors, not you are specifically'
Nathan sighed knowing it was true what Amelia was saying, but at the same time he knew it was simply stupid to think that Lloyd had already not told what had happened.
'Impossible, Lloyd has too much influence inside Khan, surely he already told how I saved Faye... no, it doesn't matter Faye's identity as such, but that she's a government agent'
'But you are important too'
Nathan shrugged.
'In name only, having the founder of Khan behind me is certainly a good thing, or at least it was for a while'
Nathan thought of Boreas whom he hadn't seen in over a year.
'But even if that old man had been the founder of Khan, that was in the past, now he's just a retired man'
Nathan was about to make another point, but out of nowhere he saw dozens of Khan members at the end of the street.
Without thinking, Nathan slipped into the space between two tents and looked stealthily at the members who were walking around, terrorizing the citizens who did not understand what was going on.
'What happened to the security? There are supposed to be dozens of both government agents and police officers in this place' Amelia said.
'You can forget about the policemen, they are normal humans who couldn't become government agents because they are just normal humans... but I don't understand what happened to the agents stationed at the entrances'
Nathan tried to recognize some of the Khan members but could only see normal soldiers with a few stars stuck on their chests.
'They are all of low rank... yet most of them where first rank third category, three others I can't distinguish their level'
Amelia hesitated for a couple of seconds.
'You can't face them'
Nathan laughed with some anxiety.
'Thank you for the support... but it's true that I can't face them'
Clicking his tongue in annoyance, Nathan stepped out from between the tents avoiding the gaze of any of the Khan members and began to turn back.
A minute later Nathan found himself in front of the hole again and realized that it had become even bigger.
'At this rate the whole floor will collapse' Amelia said in a somewhat worried tone.
Nathan nodded and suddenly opened his eyes in surprise as he saw more Khan members coming from different directions.
'Fuck... I'm surrounded'
Several ideas ran through his head, but he quickly dismissed them, then his gaze shifted to the center of the street.
Amelia who was seeing everything from her eyes paled as she saw that Nathan was staring at the hole that led to the sewer.
'Didn't you say it was a suicide?!'
'Five minutes ago it was suicide, now it's my only means of escape'
Amelia fell silent and mentally sighed.
'Do what you consider'
Nathan smiled slightly and swallowed saliva seeing how Khan's members were approaching, then without thinking much, he came out from where he was hiding and under the astonished gaze of everyone around, he jumped towards the hole and disappeared in the darkness.
