In an area far away from where the great whale had landed, destroying part of the outskirts, there was an area of warehouses that had been mostly abandoned for years.
Somehow, seeing the various warehouses illuminated by the moonlight, Nathan felt a sense of nostalgia, remembering the old factory where he had lived with the children. But all that had been many years ago and it was a time he preferred not to remember.
A couple of days had passed since the calamities had escaped from the castle, heralding the beginning of the cataclysm.
In that time many things had happened all over the city.
Most of the outskirts was a killing and death zone, where the calamities had already claimed thousands of lives and with each passing minute, more lives were being lost.
The group that ruled the outskirts had mostly disappeared, with all its members having died against the calamities or having fled the place.
On the other hand, the government had not been standing still and was actively hunting all possible calamities, knowing that at some point the calamities would leave the outskirts and follow the city of Radford.
Besides, only one wave had occurred... and they didn't know when the second would happen.
On the Khan side, with communications cut off, Nathan lost all communication with them, so he decided to act on his own.
He had recovered from his wounds with the help of Enarys, with whom he had agreed to work after hearing her proposal, although he did not fully understand it at the time.
However, days after that conversation, Nathan finally understood his duty.
Sitting on the roof of a warehouse, hidden by the darkness of the night, Nathan watched a group of people talking inside one of the warehouses.
He had been watching them stealthily for a couple of days, studying them.
According to Enarys, these men were the ones who had made the attempt on her life back at the hotel. So she put him in charge of taking care of them.
Enarys did not give him a deadline, so Nathan began to understand the group's plans.
First, remembering the couple of men who had posed as cleaning staff back at the hotel, Nathan assumed that the general strength of the majority in the group would not be as strong. However, the part that worried him was the relics they might possess.
That black orb with which they had tried to kill Enarys was a powerful and above all dangerous, whose destructive power was enough to kill hundreds of people within a certain radius of where it exploded.
It was for this reason that Nathan was slow to act, and in the end he was right.
The calamities had spread to all the outbuildings over the course of the days, and the warehouse area was no exception.
Dozens of calamities roamed the place trying to find prey, but for some reason, the calamities seemed to ignore the warehouse where the group was located.
After seeing the same thing for a few days, Nathan noticed that the calamities seemed to avoid a certain perimeter around the warehouse, which made him assume that the group had a relic that somehow prevented the calamities from attacking them.
Resting his head on his hand, Nathan sighed boredly without taking his eyes off the warehouse.
'How do you plan to get in?' Amelia asked him boredly as she spent several days doing the same thing.
Nathan grunted slightly in annoyance and grimaced.
'How do I plan to get in...? I don't know'
Amelia sighed internally.
'Didn't you come up with anything these days?'
Nathan remained silent, then raised his head and folded his arms.
'Well, actually I do have a plan... I just don't know if it will work or not'
Saying that, before Amelia could say anything else, Nathan reached into his coat and pulled out a wooden flute.
After returning from the swamp, Nathan had never used the flute. It was not until he returned from the upper realm that he became interested in it, then one day he took it and studied it.
The effects of the flute were not great, the frequencies produced by the flute could slightly alter the subconscious of the beings who listened to its melody. However, it had too many limitations.
The first limitation was the essence and the difference in power between the one who used it and the one who listened to the melody.
If someone of third rank used it, its effect would be greater against calamities or people of lower rank. But Nathan was still in the first rank, second category, so he did not know if the calamities around the warehouse would be affected.
The second limitation was probably the worst, because Nathan had no idea how to play the flute.
Each melody was supposed to have a certain effect on the listener, but Nathan only knew how to blow and let the flute do its work.
For that reason Nathan didn't know if using it would do any good, but he had nothing to lose.
'The flute?'
Nathan nodded at Amelia's question.
'It's no good infiltrating the warehouse with so many calamities outside... plus I still don't know how many people are inside, so going in blindly would be suicide'
Holding the flute in his hand, Nathan swung his legs in the air.
'What are the odds that everything will go wrong, and the calamities will be focused on me?'
Amelia wanted to slap her face, but she didn't have a body to do so.
'You really are crazy.'
Nathan smiled amusedly.
'It's not madness, it's called being creative'
Saying that, Nathan took a deep breath, put the flute to his mouth and released the air in his lungs.
He didn't even try to make an attempt to play the flute, he just let the air flow into it, which produced a dull and uninteresting sound.
All around him, the calamities that were the closest stopped and looked around in confusion, not understanding where the melody was coming from.
Nathan frowned as he realized that the calamities' interest in the melody was almost nil, so much so that they ignored him and continued to wander around.
'You have talent' Amelia teased Nathan as she saw him stop playing the flute.
'Shut up' Nathan replied somewhat embarrassed.
Taking a deep breath again, Nathan brought the flute back to his mouth and this time circulated essence into the flute.
Blowing again, the sound was almost the same as before, but this time the area where the calamities were distracted by the melody increased.
Nathan smiled slightly when he saw that it was working and continued blowing. Then little by little the calamities began to stop, and they looked around for the source of the melody.
He did not stop when he saw the reaction of the calamities, and continued blowing, then suddenly as if they were a hive mind, all the calamities looked in unison in his direction.
An awkward sound came out of the flute as Nathan almost choked at the sight of all the calamities.
'Well... shit. That didn't go as I expected'
