Chapter 111 - The cost is your essence

The fresh air hit Nathan in the face as he looked wearily up at the blue sky above him.

It had only been a few seconds since he had landed on the rooftop and he didn't know the fate of the pterodactyl, even so, Nathan lay on the ground with his eyes threatening to close.

'Don't fall asleep!' Amelia shouted at him trying to keep Nathan from giving up.

Nathan swallowed hard and took a deep breath trying to steady his breathing.

'I know...'

Resting for a couple more seconds, Nathan lifted his torso and leaned back on his arms before looking down at his legs.

The entire floor was covered in blood and there were several holes in his thighs, among them one was responsible for his bleeding.

Tearing off his pants, Nathan tied a temporary tourniquet just above his wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding. When he finished the tourniquet, he grunted at the pressure he felt in his leg but ignored it and took his cell phone out of his pocket.

Trying to call someone, Nathan clicked his tongue when he realized there was no signal, then lay back down, leaving the cell phone beside his leather.

'Amelia, tell me what you see down the street?'

Amelia nodded and an orb of light began to form right in front of him.

'I'll be right back'

Turning away from Nathan, Amelia floated to the edge of the building and stood for almost half a minute looking around before returning to him.

Realizing Amelia was back, Nathan turned his head slightly and looked at the orb of light.

'What did you see?'

Amelia was silent for a couple of seconds thinking what to start with.

'The calamity you fought seems to be dead... but otherwise, everything is a mess'

Nathan frowned slightly despite the good news of the pterodactyl's death.

'Those calamities you faced on the rooftop with the other mercenaries were not the only calamities to leave the castle... right now there are hundreds of calamities roaming the streets and slaughtering everything that crosses them'

Nathan closed his eyes and sighed.

'I figured...'

Seeing the calamities leaving the castle, Nathan knew that the cataclysm had begun.

He still had some faith that things wouldn't go the way he thought they would, but he was wrong, and that meant the chances of anyone coming to help him were almost nil.

Right now the calamities mostly filled the outskirts, but Nathan was sure that little by little they would begin to enter the city, then everything would turn into a great massacre.

Just as Nathan was beginning to resign himself as he pondered what to do, the rooftop door opened to the surprise of both him and Amelia.

'Who?'

Stepping through the door, Enarys peeked out with a calm face and elegant bearing.

"What are you doing here?" Nathan couldn't help but ask when he saw her.

Enarys held up her hand preventing her guards from passing the door and then closed it behind her being left alone with Nathan on the rooftop.

"It was mere coincidence"

"Pure bullshit"

What were the chances that just Enarys would walk up a building on a whim of her own and find a dying Nathan? Simple, they were zero.

"Are you following me?" Nathan couldn't help but doubt Enarys as he scowled at her.

Enarys approached him slowly before crouching down beside him.

"I'm telling you seriously... it was mere coincidence"

Before even letting him speak, Enarys closed her eyes and placed her hand on his body.

"Lux"

Suddenly her hand began to glow, and Nathan felt his mind calm slightly.

'What is she doing to me?'

Sensing no ill intent from Enarys, Nathan kept quiet and watched her as she kept her eyes closed and concentrated.

Slowly, the wounds on his leg began to close until minutes later they disappeared without scarring.

Nathan lifted his leg and moved it nimbly, realizing that he had recovered completely.

Nathan looked back at Enarys, who was looking at him again.

'Apart from being a source of money it's also a portable hospital'

'I wonder how much I can corrupt him'

They both had different and at the same time unhealthy thoughts, still neither expressed anything outwardly and they were silent for a couple of seconds before Nathan grabbed his head sleepily.

Enarys smiled at this and simply remained kneeling with her hands on her knees as she watched him.

"You know, healing really tires" Enarys held up her index finger. "I always found it annoying that when I healed someone I would fall asleep from wasting my own essence"

Nathan had to lean on the ground to keep from collapsing, then he looked at Enarys with a frown.

"Then one day I thought what would happen if instead of my essence I used the person's own essence?"

Nathan's mind was already about to collapse from sleep, then he heard Enarys' last words.

"I tried to put my theory into practice... and I succeeded. Not only did I succeed, but I went further"

Enarys looked at the sky and smiled broadly.

"By forcing the regeneration of someone's body using their own essence, I managed that even if the person ran out of essence, their body would continue to regenerate by expending their life force instead... they would then begin to rapidly age to death"

Nathan couldn't take it anymore and his body fell to the ground right in front of Enarys, who stopped smiling and returned to her usual natural and calm expression.

"And now we wait"
