Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Rockoon

The night enveloped Gideon, its gentle, obsidian fingers brushing through the tall trees surrounding him, coaxing them into a dance. Above, the sky wore its cloak of inky darkness, devoid of stars and moonlight. Yet, in this eerie abyss, Gideon's vision remained unimpeded, courtesy of the formidable enhancement bestowed upon him by the enigmatic *Night Form*.

In the distance, the lifeless remains of the centipede that had crossed blades with Gideon lay forgotten. His attention was now fixated on a task of utmost importance—allocating his hard-earned stat points. With four points allocated to each attribute, he experienced an immediate surge in power, each stat point acting as a catalyst for his growing prowess.

Gideon inhaled deeply, taking in the haunting symphony of the night. It was a cacophony of diverse monsters' distant howls, the unnerving flaps of night birds' wings, and the rustling, ominous sway of the trees. However, fear was a sensation that eluded Gideon's heart; instead, he felt an electrifying rush of excitement and motivation to continue his relentless hunt.

He invoked his *Roll* ability, once more transforming into a spiky, formidable ball of destruction. Without hesitation, he propelled himself forward, careening through walls of grass, over beds of decaying leaves, and even deftly navigating the treacherous maze of protruding roots.

In the span of just a few minutes, his unstoppable rolling led him to a new quarry. From a shallow cliff, a creature emerged, its appearance simultaneously familiar and strange. Gideon unfurled, his eyes narrowing as they fixated on this enigmatic being.

"Hmm... That thing is peculiar," he mused, tilting his head to one side.

*Rockoon: Level 3.*

Before him stood a creature that bore a striking resemblance to a raccoon, but its body was carved from solid marble. Its azure skin contrasted starkly against the brown leaves it was nestled among. Piercing sapphire eyes met Gideon's gaze, and with his enhanced night vision, he couldn't help but be captivated by the creature's oddity.

"That's a raccoon with rock-like skin. A golem...that's also a raccoon. Even creatures borrowed from Earth come with their unique twists," Gideon muttered, his razor-sharp claws gleaming menacingly. "And here I am, just an ordinary hedgehog."

With a swift motion, Gideon activated *Roll* and hurtled toward the mysterious creature. He descended the cliffside with ferocious intensity. Meanwhile, the Rockoon emitted an ear-piercing shriek, showcasing its confidence in its formidable defenses, as it leaped toward Gideon. The inevitable collision between the two adversaries reverberated through the night, a thunderous clash of the Rockoon's marble-like defenses against Gideon's bristling spines, producing a deafening cacophony.

The competition of power reached its climax when two formidable adversaries rebounded from their previous clash. Gideon, with an unparalleled quickness, prepared his razor-sharp claws the moment his feet touched the ground. On the opposing side, the Rockoon groaned, its massive form enveloped in a swirling shroud of ebony smoke that insidiously devoured its stone-like exterior.

The inky plumes billowed forth from the Rockoon's chest, stomach, and hands, emanating from grievous puncture wounds inflicted by Gideon's spines. Despite the beast's seemingly impregnable defense, the gaping holes in its rocky hide bore testament to Gideon's unparalleled penetration prowess.

Gideon ran a claw across nearby leaves, their verdant vitality corroded upon contact. He grinned triumphantly and proclaimed, "So, this is the true meaning behind the Blessing's enigmatic promise – my attacks transcend all forms of resistance and defense. No bastion can halt the relentless march of my strikes. It's as though I possess an innate Penetration stat that brooks no counter!"

The Rockoon emitted a thunderous roar, its imposing, stony frame hurtling toward Gideon with terrifying force. Swift as a shadow, Gideon invoked *Dig* and plunged into the earth, attuning his senses to the subtle vibrations reverberating through the soil. This uncanny awareness allowed him to pinpoint the creature's location with unerring precision.

With a graceful leap, he emerged from beneath the Rockoon, his lithe form spinning perilously close to the creature's massive bulk. Had the Rockoon been a fraction slower, Gideon's claws would have effortlessly cleaved it in twain, despite its adamantine armor. However, the beast managed to evade the full brunt of the assault, leaping nimbly backward.

Even so, Gideon's attack landed a resounding blow, rending a cavernous fissure through the Rockoon's midriff, exposing its mysterious innards.

"So, you are stone through and through," Gideon mused as he propelled himself into the air. "Fascinating." His claw shimmered with malevolent intent as he invoked *Claw Attack*, vanishing from his prior location only to reappear behind his stony adversary.

The Rockoon had scant moments to react. With a fluid and practiced motion, Gideon's ebony claw arced through the air, slicing through the Rockoon's neck with a dreadful finality. The creature's head was severed cleanly from its body, and the pair plummeted to the forest floor. Oddly, no blood flowed – only fragments of fractured rock.

*You have leveled up.*

Gideon alighted upon a bed of dry leaves, his diminutive feet making nary a sound. He waved his claws in the air, fixating his gaze upon the fallen Rockoon. "A mere single Level?" he exclaimed, his tone a mixture of curiosity and disappointment. "This adversary stood one Level above me, yet the rewards are paltry. It appears that further advancement from this point may prove daunting."

With a contemplative air, he began to distance himself from the fallen Rockoon. "Perhaps it's time to reconsider my prey. Perhaps I should set my sights on mightier adversaries in order to accelerate my growth. I do, after all, possess a substantial statistical advantage."

As Gideon ventured deeper into the dense forest, the weight of his thoughts pressed upon him. The forest, once teeming with life and the echoes of myriad creatures, had fallen silent. It was a place where time and reality were malleable, where the pursuit of power led to a confluence of fates.

The Blessing had been both a boon and a burden, granting him extraordinary abilities while enmeshing him in the escalating contest for supremacy. He knew that his journey was far from over, and the forest held many more secrets, challenges, and adversaries yet to be faced.

Gideon's resolve was unshaken, his determination unyielding. He would carve his path through this enigmatic realm, mastering his newfound powers and conquering foes both known and unknown. For in the heart of the forest, where the competition of power knew no bounds, only the strongest would endure and thrive.
