"I should go home in a bit," Kevin said softly and pressed a kiss against her hair before he leaned his head against hers again. Heather was sat against his chest in between his legs, with her legs pulled up. And they'd been sat like that for almost an hour already, talking softly now and again but mostly silently.
"No, don't," she told him as she held onto his arms tightly, which were wrapped around her waist.
"I have to."
"But why? Your parents won't be expecting you home until late tonight anyway," she whined now, turning sideways to look at him with a sweet smile. "Please?"
"Ohw," he sighed. "How can I say no to that?" he asked, chuckling when she kissed him happily. Heather sank back against him as he hugged her tighter. "If I can't go home, we should go to yours soon," he said now, getting a quizzical look from her. "I'm starting to feel hungry," Kevin answered honestly, his stomach rumbling softly.
"Mum won't have enough food for you too. Wait, I'll text her to say I'm eating out," she realised and grabbed her phone to start texting.
"Who are you gonna say you're with?" he asked curiously, trying not to read along over her shoulder.
"You. Why would I make someone up? I'll just say we ran into each other, which we did, and that we decided to go out for something to eat," Heather told him, almost with a duh-tone to her voice.
"Hm okay," he gave in, kissing her neck now.
"She won't be happy about it though," she warned. "Why didn't you let me know earlier?" she mimicked now, making him laugh.
"Surely, she won't once she knows we're back together, right?" Kevin said now, rocking her slowly. "I know my mum kept asking me why we'd broken up and why we weren't back together yet," he added, getting a small laugh.
"Yeah, mum did a lot of that too," she said softly, making him look at her curiously as he wondered how bad her mother's questions had gotten. "To be honest, it was one of the reasons I didn't bother coming home much. Every time I spoke to her she'd ask about you, and if I happened to mention someone else she'd lecture me. For the first year anyway," she explained, having felt him tense slightly. "She thought I was being so stupid…. Now I wish I'd listened to her," Heather added, trying to blink back the tears that had started suddenly, hoping he wouldn't notice.
But knowing her as well as he did, Kevin carefully turned her face towards him and wiped them away when she'd blinked them onto her cheek. "I never told you this, but after a few very hard long months I realised you may have done the right thing, especially now I've experienced it first hand with Stephanie. The distance would've been hell from Cardiff to Cambridge. We would've ended up fighting a lot I think," he told her, getting a small smile in response.
"Bittersweet victory," she said, making him laugh as she laughed herself. She moved slightly sideways, so she could nuzzle her face against his shoulder and neck. He hugged her again without saying anything.
A growl from his stomach after about ten minutes made them both remember what had brought up this serious part of the conversation and made them both laugh.
"We'd better go feed you," Heather chuckled as she disentangled herself and got up.
"Good idea. Prezzos?" Kevin asked as he held out his hand for her to pull him up.
"Yeah sounds good," she nodded, not able to resist reaching up to kiss him once he was back on his feet. He went through her hair again as he kissed back. "Let's go," she said a little breathless and started pulling him along.
"Wait," he stopped her when he saw she was covered in sand and started brushing it off her legs and bum. She gave him a reproachful look and, when he'd finished, stepped around him to do the same to him. She noticed his bum was still as tight as ever and couldn't help going back to it, even though she'd long gotten all the sand off it already. He bit back a chuckle as he let her, then pulled her into his arms as he started walking. "If you wanted to feel me up, all you had to do was ask," he told her teasingly, getting elbowed in the ribs in response.
"You started it," Heather accused him now, trying not to blush and to sound a bit more innocent.
He pulled her closer with a chuckle. "If I hadn't and you found out you'd walked into Prezzos covered in sand, you'd have yelled at me," Kevin defended himself, getting a glare from her when she realised that was only too true. And that she couldn't say it back, because he wouldn't have cared about being covered in sand.
"Yeah well…." she started, trying to think of a response. She ducked out of the way when he made to pull her in again. "You're mean," she just said eventually, making him laugh but let him pull her into his arms now.
"I know," he sighed teasingly, which she ignored.
"I'm still having trouble believing this is actually happening," Heather said softly as she looked at his hands holding hers on the table. He smiled, as his thumb rubbed the back of hers.
"I know," he nodded; if this had been happening to a friend, he would've told them to be careful about rushing back into another relationship. As it was, he was just incredibly grateful to have her back in his life and to call her his again. "Just out of curiosity, how many guys have you been with since we…?" he asked carefully, not sure if it was something they should or shouldn't talk about. "Except if you'd rather not tell me," he added quickly when he saw the look of hesitation on her face, trying not to read too much into that.
"No, it's okay. But when you say been with, do you mean just dating or… well you know?" she asked to clarify. If it was the former, there'd been quite a few but if it was the latter it wasn't so bad.
"The second one," he answered, not wanting to actually have to say the word sex and all its implications or images.
"Oh, in that case only three," Heather told him honestly now.
"Three?" Kevin checked. Technically, that was only one a year, which wasn't bad at all really. And even though she'd had more relationships, none of them had been as serious as his with Stephanie had been.
"Uh huh," she nodded, hoping it wasn't freaking him out.
"Okay… not as bad as my imagination was making it out to be," he said, managing a laugh.
She laughed as well, still cautiously taking him in. "And you? I take it that it was just Steph?" she asked now, getting a nod back.
"Yeah… there was no way really I could face it with anyone else that soon."
"Interesting how we both dealt with it completely differently," Heather said now with a thoughtful expression, getting another nod.
"I always was the more mature one," Kevin teased her, trying to lighten up the conversation he'd started.
She couldn't resist poking her tongue out at him. "You weren't so mature on Friday," she told him, getting a confused look back. "Are you telling me you weren't acting out of jealousy when you tried bragging about my alcohol intake and pulling me away from Josh and Neil?" she asked with a wink. It had been fairly obvious, even to her, at the time.
"Well… I… I… don't really remember," he said uncomfortably, fidgeting in his seat as he looked at her hand in his.
She chuckled merrily as she leaned in and kissed his hand. "That's okay honey," she told him, giving him a cheeky little smile when he looked up at her.
"Yeah, yeah," Kevin now took her teasing in his stride. "Do you want dessert, or would you rather go?" he asked when he noticed the waiter was coming their way.
"Go," she said without hesitation as she gave him a wink.
"Just the cheque please," he told the waiter before he could even ask.
"Okay," the waiter nodded as he got the hint and quickly walked back to the bar to get it for them.
