They had been flying for some time when he first saw from the horizon a tiny dot, It didn't look grand at all. That's when they started descending and it became apparent just how large a tower it was.
It was the grandest structure Rowan had seen in both of his lives. It still felt lacklustre to Rowan somehow.
'These mages and their large fancy towers.'
That's when he saw a large ray leave the top of the tower.'What was that? It looks way more intriguing than what those old crooks came up with.'
They softly landed in front of the tower, and that's when Mother decided to give him a little pat to calm him down.
They walked through a grandiose door that had heavily armoured guards surrounding the perimeter, a few cloaked mages also formed the inner part of the perimeter. A guard smiled at the staring child to which he replied by turning his head.
After they were verified smoothly, they entered a reception-like space where several young adults were sitting anxiously.
He thought they'd have to wait for a while but the receptionist just pointed them to a room after having a few casual words with his mother.
The room wasn't as large as the hall, only about as large as the living quarters of two soldiers, with a table and two chairs in the middle. On one of the tables sat an old man with a well-maintained beard who gestured to them to sit on the opposing chair.
Then he pointed towards Rowan, who slowly started floating towards him, his mother didn't intervene so it was probably harmless. Rowan saw him chant another spell after which he saw a red light being emitted from himself.
Years of war allowed him to not get startled by the sudden occurrence.
His mother and the old mage had an exchange which Rowan pieced together with his broken vocabulary.
' Child.....fire...magic.....yes? Does that mean I have an affinity with fire magic? Can I be a mage in this life?'
He was pondering these questions when his mother happily picked him up and went back to the reception where she wrote something in a large book.
'I can't read what she's writing, I didn't expect that there would be a day when I wouldn't be able to spy because of being illiterate.'
After some time in the air, he was once again left in the crib. He went back to practising morphing.
At two years of age, he had a good vocabulary, which earned him praise from his mother, Kyra, he knew her name now along with that of his father, Ergon and his sister, Sabrina.
Also, he had a new name now, Noah.
He could morph his hands into wolf claws now, but he still couldn't turn them into steel yet.
He could walk now without morphing his legs.'I shouldn't let my abilities be discovered without a good reason.'
He walked around the house mainly, he still wasn't allowed to be outside by himself.
'I could go out but I'd rather not get kidnapped, their blood would surely stain my clothes if I killed them with claws and I don't plan on explaining myself. Let's just enjoy a carefree life for now.'
His sister stayed at home during the evening and was responsible for feeding him, he had once seen her cook using magic.
'I never saw such novel application of magic in my previous world, those guys just made weapons of war. What could be the reason for this period of peace?'
At three years old he had been given books to read by his mother with instructions to not damage them. They were mainly fables that had several depictions of mages and their magic, probably to develop an interest in kids learning magic.
'I might as well learn magic in this life now that I can use it.'
He had grown tall enough to see himself in the mirror at four years of age.
He discovered that he also had purple hair like his mother and sister.
'So does affinity depend upon hair colour or is it hereditary, but what about the ability to use magic, mages seem to all have coloured hair?'
'I can form a basic steel armour but 1 minute is as far as I can take it before forgetting how my body looked like before, undoing the armour also causes a drain me.'He examined his growth in morphing abilities.
'It was fine when I didn't have people observing me all the time but now I can't just walk around the house with a slightly longer arm.'
'I think I'll be enrolled in an academy soon where I can learn more about the current state of affairs of this world.'
"Noah, over here", his mother called from the shop. She closed the shutter of the shop after which she crouched down to look at him, "Noah, did I ever tell you about the 'frost phase'?"
He gave it a thought and replied, "Are you talking about the winter?"
His mother laughed heartily at the question.
"No, it looks like I haven't told you yet, Every fifteen or so years a winter far colder and as long as two years arrives. Trade is slow during this time and I get very few adventurers willing to shop."
"Usually people enrol their children at 5 years of age but now that you can't begin until you're 6, I was thinking about teaching you a little about magic as you're already good enough at reading and writing for your age."
She took some time before adding, "That is only if you want to learn early, So what do you think?"
"I want to learn from you, Mother."He added cheerfully.
'This is a godsend, I believe that it is time to increase my repertoire with magic.'
"Great, let's start your classes from tomorrow."
"Your father could also teach you the history of the empire now that he will also be staying at home."
He didn't let it show on his face but he was equally excited about finally gathering some information about this new world.
