Chapter 3 - Magic emperor and fire magic

They began their first lesson the next day. "The first mage harnessed mana through an accident about a thousand years ago. He was said to have been fetching water from a ground well and was about to trip on his way back when he used mana instinctually to stop his fall."

"After realising that he had something special, he started trying to understand mana. Through his several experiments, he finally got a feel for mana. After this, he told his father who tried it as well just to make his son realise without breaking his hopes."

"Unexpectedly after following his son's steps, he felt it too, This spread to the rest of the village and finally all over the country."

"Humanity progressed as it always did and found a stable way to control and replicate the power."

"That way being spells, which finally started the new era for the civilisation. Lots of talented mages formed a lot of spells to use mana."

"Affinities were understood and divided into fire, earth, air, shadow, water, light, divine, frost and some abstract ones that are known very little about."

"Did you get all that?", Mother stopped speaking and looked at him with a smile.

"Yes, I did."

'Oh so the way magic was discovered is almost the same as in my previous world, let's see where the divergence occurs.'

"Just tell me when you miss something, and I'll repeat it for you."Mother reminded him and continued.

"As magic developed several organisations developed that hid their spells and seldom had fights with other organisations. Public unrest had been growing due to the mage fights breaking all over and the king used this to execute the mages he feared. Soon a mage with the rare affinity of gravity magic appeared, who went ahead and crushed all of the organisations and made a new one under his reign called 'Serath'."

"After stabilising the population that suffered from the 'frost phase', he became the mage emperor and replaced the monarch of the time."

"The royals and the nobles resisted but it just required a single visit from the mage emperor to quell all resistance."

"He made policies to make sure that people didn't starve during the 'frost phase'. He reduced the taxes and used a portion to employ mages for the construction of facilities that coordinated several rare spells to increase grain production by normal seeds which were then stored and released during the frost phase to feed the populace."

"I presume you must be getting bored of the history by now but don't worry, the only other thing I'll be telling you about before we move on to teaching you about magic is the purpose of the magic towers and the rest will be taken care of by your father."

"The magic towers house a lot of great mages but their main purpose is maintaining contact with the rest of the world."

"Still awake? That's good, The first time I was taught I almost slept before the lesson on magic history ended, haha, You seem to be quite interested in it, all the kids usually start asking for some 'actual magic' by now."

"I guess I'm quite a good teacher."

Noah pondered on the story he just heard,' It appears that the mage emperor had a personality like mine, although I wasn't as upfront when I took over the kingdom, he also didn't get betrayed unlike me.'

"I just liked the mage emperor's story, Mother.", Noah replied with a smile.

"I have a question though, What was the Mage emperor's name?"

Mother replied with a smile," I didn't expect you to ask that, to answer your question let me repeat what the Mage emperor said,' The title that I have been granted is far too great to be attached to my name and become hereditary and that's how this title will always remain, attached to no one, but belonging to the one that works the hardest for the stability that me and my followers have established.' His words were later made into a law that every mage emperor must follow."

Noah felt respect for the first Mage emperor.

'He hated incompetence that much, huh? Not like I ever had any plans to have children anyway. Thinking about I never cared much about the empire I made did I? Although I achieved peace by conquering, I never cared enough to make sure that the peace lasted even after my death.'

'Ah, didn't I take out half the empire when I went down? Not my fault that they cornered me to such an extent though. Although I do feel a little bad for the people who died just for my revenge. I'll pray for them sometime soon, I guess.'

Mother continued, "Now about magic, as you already know, spells cause the mana in our body to work in a programmed way after reading our intent for which you must maintain concentration on your task."

"Affinities are the type of mana that are bodies store the most, Although an accomplished mage like me can convert mana to some extent and cast spells of other elements, the wastage in the conversion is too much and the spells that can be produced are also simple ones."

"Mana stored in the body can be increased by spell usage but it also depends on the affinity, the greater the affinity, the more the mana stored and faster the spells released, Don't worry though, you have a great affinity for fire."

"That brings us to the first spell you'll be practising, 'the song of the fire wisp'. I chose this one because you can be hurt while playing with fire spells, A fire wisp only gives off a slight heat, which makes it perfect for you to practice with."

"You still aren't permitted to use it without my observation."

She then proceeds to chant a small spell, which summons an ethereal fire-like light. It started moving around after a while and passed through Noah leaving his clothes a little warmth and dissipated after a while

"Pretty cool right? Now why don't you try reciting the spell while imagining the fire wisp you just saw."

Noah decided to give it a try and started chanting.

'Where do these summons come from? Let's ask Mother later.'
