Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 Tragedy Strikes

December 15th 2023, everything was going fine, I walked into my class expecting a normal day but I was sorely mistaken.

It was third period exactly half an hour away from lunch time, I started to doze of until my teacher called out my name "Mack what is the answer to question B", when I looked at the board I saw a math question I had no understanding of.

I've never liked this class, the kids are annoying and I especially hate the teacher. The only kid I somewhat like is this girl Jessie.

at that moment there was a rumble coming from below us. everyone looked around at each other with distressed faces. "Earthquake!" a blonde girl yelled out.

before anyone could react a large fish-like creature broke through the floor and consumed the girl. everyone just stood there in shock, besides for one boy who tried to kick the strange monster.

The monster looked absolutely disgusting it was a massive fish with 4 legs. The fish turned around and dismembered him with its teeth. Three girls immediately tried to run out of the class but the fish was even faster than them as they were consumed just like the others.

this was truly a disaster, the fish just stood still as people cried out for their friends. I had no idea what to do, i've never even won a fight before.

out of nowhere a thought appeared in my brain as if it had been implanted, I could suddenly understand the fact that I had the ability to roll a 20 sided dice to increase either my strength, agility, speed or durability. Where had this thought come from?

a blonde boy raised his hand and shot a stream of water at the monster. it retaliated by rushing at him, he tried to step back but it had cornered him. two students ran towards it, one punched it hard enough to knock it back and the other made a sword out of thin air and stabbed it.

That was when I realized everyone here had gained some sort of ability and we would have to use them to defeat this thing.

in my hand appeared a 20 sided die, I decided I would roll for strength to try to punch this thing. I threw the dice onto the floor and got a 15. Strength surged through me a I lunged at it. Punching it knocked off some of its scales.

from the info I have I know this strength will last for 5 minutes. Many other students started attacking the fish with their unique powers. It was starting to seem like we could actually overwhelm this thing

. That was until it grew extra arms on its sides, it grabbed some students at and them. Some of the people attacking started to move back including me. when I looked out the window I saw other monsters attacking the entire city of toronto, a dragon stood on top of the CN Tower as it blew fire at the streets.

Its official the world is over.

"come on we need to fight!" my classmate Jessie yelled, she has always been considered the class leader so everyone listened to her. Unfortunately fighting may not have been the best idea because 5 more students were killed as they tried to fend of the beast.

Things were starting to look bleak as everyone realized there were little of us left.

"Mack lets get out of here!" Jessie yelled as an ak-47 appeared in her hand. On her face was an aggressive expression I had never seen on her before. She shot at the fish as she ran out of the door.

I slid under the fish and headed straight for the door. I was getting so close, the fish reached for me with one of its many arms.

I felt it grab the back of my shirt, I was doomed, it had gotten me. A student I didn't even know the name of pushed me towards the door and took my place as the one being murdered. He was a hero

Tears rolled down my eyes as I escaped the blood filled classroom. In the hallway there were multiple people fighting off bug-like monsters.

"what's your ability" Jessie said as she pointed towards me. "I can roll a die to make myself stronger, what's yours?" I replied. "I can make any weapon I want!" she said as she made a pistol in one hand and a sword in to other.

She cut down the flys and shot others. "Let's get out of the school as fast as possible" she yelled to everyone in the hallway.

I started to roll the die for speed so I could run but before it could could get out of my hand a student covered in blood kicked me backwards. Clearly some people already saw this situation as a chance to gain power over others.

The dice fell out of my hand as I hit the ground, I was unable to see what it rolled but when I ran towards the man I was significantly faster. Before I could even reach him a bullet went straight through his head and standing behind him was Jessie with her gun. we both ran straight towards the exit as Jessie killed the many monsters.

Outside we collapsed, we were both exhausted mentally and physically and needed a small break. In the distance other monsters roamed the streets but it seemed like we had a few minutes to sit and relax.

"I'm going to call my brother, he's a cop and can get us shelter and food" Jessie said. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and put in a number. She proceeded to have a tense conversation with her brother.

After putting down the phone she turned to me and said "we need to find a way to get to the police station to meet up with my brother" "were all gonna die" I muttered "trust me, we will find a way especially now that we have these powers" she replied in an upbeat manner.

She truly is an optimist, that's what I have always loved about her since we were kids. Her curly hair blew in the wind as we sat on the ground. "If we try to fight a lot of monsters we will pass out before we make it so we need to try to avoid them" I suggested "good point, from here the alleyways seem clear so we should try to use those" she said with a smile on her face.

the fact she was smiling perplexed me even in a situation like this most optimist's wouldn't smile
