Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

BEAUMONT, Jaslynn (Jas-leen)

My gaze wandered across the bunch of enthusiastic teens who were all eager to practise the new spells they had learned on the dolls.

My responsibility as the leader of the biggest Coven in the nation was to ensure that these budding witches and wizards were familiar with all of the spells in the book and when to employ them.

"You shouldn't use Mortemous Averarda when you unexpectedly come across an enemy!" I exclaimed loudly as I paced in front of the kids.

A chorus of groans and a few puzzled looks followed, which made me giggle at their disappointment.

I slowed my pace and asked, "Does anyone want to guess why?" with my eyebrows arched.

"Since the enemy caught us off guard, we won't have enough concentration to perform the death spell correctly in the short time frame before they attack," a hand shot up, drawing my attention to the short brunette lad with a wide smile.

I grinned, which made Theodore's beam shine brighter. "Exactly, very good, Theodore."

Anyone familiar with the tale of the magician Ernest who transformed into a frog?

A few heads shook and there were a few nods.

I started to move down the line once more, "Ernest was a classmate of mine who disregarded this caution. He attempted to cast the death spell when he was attacked by a creature in the woods but was sidetracked by his pet frog, Ro, who hopped out of his bag. When he yelled Rortemous rather than Mortemous, the spell ended up working against him. Since then, no one has seen him, but according to folklore, he still lives with Ro the frog.

"We're not that stupid!" someone shouted among the laughing.

I half-smiled and said, "Ernest shared that opinion. He stood where you did, chuckling at the absurdity of the apparent warning. See where he is right now. With his pet, he is producing tadpoles.

As soon as the hilarity stopped, I secretly laughed at their grave expressions.

The younger teenagers believed they were in charge and understood everything. It was time for them to start learning how to be taken down a notch.

We emphasise this policy for a reason. You should wait until you are totally engaged and immersed in the fght before using the harder spells. Older wizards find it simpler because they have used these spells frequently. Start small and progress as you gain experience so that you can match their level of proficiency. Understood?"

"Yes," you said.

I approached the wooden dummies from the sidelines and waved my wand. A number of them twirled around before raising their wooden swords in the air.

We will begin by practising a few basic spells, such as disarming and freezing. If you decide to cast the freezing spell, though, kindly avoid freezing one another. I laughed and glanced at the two sheepish witches who had been the unfortunate ice cubes the previous time. "The hospital wasn't pleased with how many of you got frostbite last time," I added.

"Begin!"

I stepped aside to give them some space, only to bump into a panting Meredith.

"Mer? Why are you in this place? I scowled and patted her back as she began to cough. I need to talk to you, she said after clearing her throat and shaking her red hair away from her face. like right now."

"Do you think you could supervise for a while?" I asked Anton, my helper.

"Of course," he said with a nod. "Ms. Jaslynn."

Meredith grabbed my hand and carried me into the Coven building before I could say "thank you." I yanked my hand away from her so that I could keep up with her as she almost ran down the corridor.

We finally entered my office, and I locked the door before saying, "You know, I'm always ready to hang out, but what is it that couldn't wait till after my training session?" with an eyebrow lifted.

"You got a call from the Minister," she said as she rolled her eyes and sat down next to my workstation on the loveseat.

My stomach sank to the floor as my heart dropped.

You suggest that the Minister himself called? Or his helper?" He dialled. I truly made a complete fool of myself.

I must have stuttering like an idiot.

"What did he say?" I bit my lip anxiously.

The annual meeting will now take place tomorrow because of "some matters that needed to be attended to right away," he wanted to let you know. She stated, enclosing the final phrase in quotation marks.

Anxiety caused my stomach to turn. He must have had some type of emergency or anything unforeseen come up if he postponed the meeting till tomorrow.

something that resembles him.

What if it's about him? I thought as my hands clinched into fists and I glanced at the grey carpet. What if he had returned?

I doubt it, Meredith shook her head. You would have been the first to be aware. Because the Minister said that Alpha Alrik Kuznetsov will also be attending the meeting, I believe it has to do with werewolves.

"So Alpha Alrik has finally decided to pull his head out of his ass to attend the meeting?" I scoffed at the mention of the infamous Alpha.

"I suppose so. Do you dislike him? Curious, Meredith questioned. Although I have never met him, I am aware of the things he has done and the fear that all werewolves have for him. Despite being referred to as the

unofcial Alpha King."

Does that imply you'll be afraid of him? You know, since you've got werewolf blood in you, right, Meredith smirked?

I threw my coat in her direction and said, "Very funny, Mer. The last person who should be afraid of him is myself. He is merely an Alpha who became arrogant due to power. I don't intend to become a trembling bundle of nerves if I run into him during the conference.

Meredith's gasp as she stumbled ungainly to the floor cut me off.

The phrase "what the f-"

She said, shakily pointing at the glass, "F-fairies.

That way. I observed them. They resembled toothpicks in size.

One had no hair and-"

Fairies? Did she have me on?

"Mer, I believe the discussion of Alpha Alrik is making you feel confused. I chuckled as I turned around and unlocked the door once more.

I wasn't hallucinating, she said as she stared at me and tossed a cushion at my back. Outside your window, there were two fairies in reality.

Did they arrive to take my teeth?

"Jaslynn!"

I laughed as I shook my head and said, "I'll see you later, Mer." I bid Meredith farewell and left her in the care of her fairies.

She made her way outside once more to keep an eye on the witches and wizards.

The last thing I could think about was the annual meeting with Alpha Alrik.

What are your initial impressions about Jaslynn, sweethearts? You will meet Alpha Alrik in the following chapter and see his horrible deeds.
