Chapter 4 - Chapter One - part 4

He was doing this, standing the middle of the road all alone waiting for a Vampire to come at him, all with a pocket knife doused with a Vampire tranquilizer to protect him should they 'fail' to get to him on time. He hated this plan and hated the one behind this plan, but what could he do because in the end, she was right.

He was the only Hunter unknown to the Vampire World at the moment, courtesy of recently graduating from the Academy which meant that the Vampire that came out of the woods first wouldn't think him to be a Hunter, but simply a lost boy in Nsukka. The logic was sound, and only the logic had been able to convince him to do this.

"You look a little lost buddy, sure you know where you're going?" He heard a voice ask as they came out of the forest. The man looked a little too elegant to be human, the normal human distinctions of imperfections were no where to be seen, no pimple on his face, no hair overgrown, no drop of sweat and the normal human smell was vacant, he instead smelt of whatever perfume he was wearing, and had a skin so smooth he could be in a commercial for one of those beauty creams.

"Actually I have no idea what I am doing here, I was supposed to meet a girl here a couple of hours ago, but it seems like she couldn't make it." He said as he took slow calm breaths while looking at him and fishing out his phone to pretend to check for messages or the time.

Vampires were well known within the Hunting Community as living breathing lie detectors that can detect even the smallest unit of a lie, however he had found a way around the lying thing by telling the truth as best as he could while adding his own version of the truth that he so ingrained into his mind that he almost believed it to be true as well. It had gotten him out of many troubles all his life and he knew it would help him in the future as well.

"But here in no place to take a girl to." The Vampire said as he slowly approached him.

"She suggested this place, but it seems like something came up at the last moment so she can't make it." He said as he groaned in frustration and put his phone in his pocket. "Maybe she pranked me."

"Girls can be so cruel sometimes right?" The Vampire asked as he walked ever closer to him filling his nose with the nice smell of his cologne.

"Right." He replied as he looked the Vampire in the eye. "And so can boys." He finished as a rain of bullets flew out the forest and into the Vampire's back.

The Vampire let out a loud shriek of shock and pain as it tried to moved its body to attack whatever was in the forest, but it didn't take long for the tranquilizers to kick in and make him fall on the floor unconscious.

"Nice job keeping him distracted. Maybe your calling is in Vampire Bait and not Vampire Hunter." Davina said with a chuckle as they carried the body of the Vampire into the forest while he went to get his equipment from the car they had hidden in the forest.

Moments later the Vampire they had captured was tied to a tree despite being unable to be conscious for at least a couple of hours, by then he would have been done and the creature would have been dead. Kneeling before the Vampire, he connected the tubes into the inner elbows and connected them to the machine before he began the procedure of extracting the blood, separating virus from blood before mixing it intimately with a heart protector.

He had to continuously check that the machine separating the virus from blood was not mixing even a little drop of blood with the Virus, even a little trace could ruin the entire batch they were doing and would thus render the lengths they had just gone through moot. He was not just being overly cautious, he was being cautious from experience, he after all hadn't just stumbled upon great success in the procedure on his first try, on the contrary, he had had a lot of ups and downs before he had finally achieved a breakthrough and become a Vampire for a night.

Suddenly, one of the Hunters stationed on the truck turned to look at Caleb with a grim look that even Alexander didn't need a prophet to know exactly what the message was. Everyone was immediately alert at the brief exchange of looks between Caleb and Davina before the rest of them. Words barely were shared amongst them before they all released their weapons and stealthily moved out of the clearing they were in, leaving only Davina behind as protection perhaps.

"Is everything alright?" He asked despite knowing the answer to the question as he filled the 21st pint with the Serum.

"Just do what you are here for genius, Caleb will handle the Legion and be back here in no time." She replied.

Well, he had been worried before but now he most definitely was not. A Legion was not one or two Vampires that could be effortlessly dispatched thanks to the suits they wore which enhanced their speed and strength to nearly match those of a Vampire. A Legion were at least 20 strong and only 11 out of a Vampire Hunting Squad of 12 had gone; if his cynical side of him had done the calculations right, he knew the odds were not in Caleb's favour regardless of how good he was. He could win of course, but he doubted it, he highly doubted the Legion were only 20 from the way Davina's body language screamed of fear. A Legion made each other twice more powerful than normal, and that did not bode well for either of them who were still working on his procedure.

"How did they know we were here?" He asked.

"Don't be ridiculous genius, they are Vampires they can smell humans from a pretty far distance, also they could be patrols looking for this one." She finished as she looked at the Vampire and then him.

Alexander ignored her looks and instead continued working on the serum, he had a job to do and he would be damned if he didn't finish it before Caleb hopefully returned from his side mission. Just as he filled the 31st pint, Davina stabbed the Vampire in the heart with her silver blade. Outraged, he stood up to glare at the Hunter. "What the hell was that for? We needed about 62 more for a three month long mission not just 31."

"Life has thrown a wrench in our Plan A, so now we go for Plan B." She said as she picked up the machines and wrapped them in a bag before tossing them as far as she could into the woods.

"What is Plan B?"

"Caleb has gone to handle the Vampire threat but if he had been successful he would have been back by now, but he isn't which means only one thing… Caleb is dead." She said as she looked at him with the face of someone about to give a grave news. "The Hunter Princess must still be rescued from the Vampire Fortress, seeing as you are the most experienced when it comes to being a Vampire for a night, you are going to go to Fort Crag and rescue the Princess before the world as we know it goes to shit." She said as she gave him a syringe for him to inject himself with. "Now here's what we are going to do."

"Woah, woah, woah, it was never part of the plan for me to go in there! I am just the guy that does this, why don't you go in there?" He asked her in confusion and panic as he watched her completely ignore him in favour of taking one of the pint and extracting the serum into a syringe.

"I am quite infamous amongst the Vampire Community, my face is more common than even Caleb's but yours… no Vampire knows your face." She said as she gave him the syringe while keeping the bag that had the remaining 30 pints in it by the side of the now dead Vampire.

"No, I am not doing this, I am not prepared for this mentally or otherwise." He said as he backed away from the syringe that he handed to him.

"Listen to me genius, we don't have time to convince you that you have to do this, so you have to do it." She said as she gave him to the syringe.

Alexander took the syringe and looked at her with a look of trepidation and nervousness. "I don't want to do this." He said as he looked at the syringe and began to think about the multitude of things that could go wrong if he took the serum and went into Fort Crag. He was not prepared for this, he had thought something could go wrong but had not thought that he was the one to enter Fort Crag should things go wrong.

"You have exactly five seconds to inject yourself with that and punch the daylight out of me." She said as she shook him out of his thoughts, physically.

Feeling the urgency in her voice, he did as he was told. This was no time to think about himself, the fate of the world rested on him going into Fort Crag and rescuing the Princess; it gave no space for him to think about the safety of his person.

The moment the seum went into his veins, his eyes immediately went sharper and his nose began to pick more scents. His ears picked up more sounds and he felt far stronger than normal. Before he could fully get his bearings, Davina attacked him with a punch.

Due to her suit which enhanced her abilities to near Vampire Like strength and speed, the punch was quite hard that it threw him down on the ground. Recovering on time, he was able to catch her next punch and throw her to the tree before giving her a punch as she rose to attack him again. She fell on the flow, rolled and stood up throwing multiple darts at him, darts he was able to avoid only for her to tackle him to the ground and deliver two quick punches before he threw her off him.

Was this the plan B, he becomes a Vampire, fights her so that they could get caught by the Vampires and then they trust him and bring him into Fort Crag and then he rescues the Princess? What about her person, what was her plan should they get caught? Was she expecting to be dead if plan A failed?

Before he could further think through the situation they were in she launched herself at him, but this time he was able to catch her from the air, throw her down on the ground and pin her down. Moments later, a group of bloodied Vampires walked into the clearing
