When she was abroad, she rarely celebrated New Year's Day.
Overseas, Christmas was the preferred holiday.
Having grown up abroad, she followed local customs, and as she had no relatives from Chunark nearby, she only knew about the festivals back home through chats with Emma Tonkin and Iris Thompson.
But she didn't understand how New Year's Day was celebrated back home.
So, one night six years ago, as she lay in bed and looked at the man sleeping on a makeshift bed on the floor, she suddenly couldn't sleep.
She asked, "Is New Year's Day lively in our country?"
The man of few words replied with a single syllable, "Hmm."
Eve Thompson contemplated and asked, "What's there to do on New Year's Day?"
He answered succinctly, "Fireworks, good food, visiting relatives."
He actually disliked these elaborate customs, but unexpectedly, his words struck a chord with Eve Thompson.
Good food, visiting relatives... these were exactly what she had always wanted.
