She did not answer Carlos Charlie's question, and the scene was one of prolonged silence.
Anthony Charlie stood behind Eve Thompson. He reached out and patted her shoulder without saying a word.
After a while, it was Carlos Charlie who broke the silence.
"Mommy," it said slowly, "I've never told you that although I have feelings, I actually don't have the sense of pain. So, even if you format me, it won't hurt."
Very obediently, it spoke, "Mommy, go ahead, don't hesitate."
Eve's eyes became even redder.
She touched Carlos Charlie's head.
But Carlos Charlie hesitated for a long time before asking again that question hidden deep in its heart, the one it never understood, "Mommy, why do humans hate me so much?"
This perplexing question clenched Eve's heart.
She gazed at Carlos Charlie and spoke again, "Because they don't understand you well enough."
She reached out, wiping the tears from the corner of her eyes.
