Chapter 19 - A Big Fish

Saidra's dead body fell over with a loud thud, his eyes wide in shock, his face frozen with an unchanging expression of disbelief.

The other officials stared at this scene in surprise, in disbelief, in unhidden perplexity. Saidra had just died because of his refusal to drink a human's blood. It was just too... unreal.

"Does anyone still have anything to say? She is after all, just a human." General Zord said in an evil voice hinted with coldness. He looked at them all, his stare carrying invisible knives and daggers.

"Hachar." He called. "Drink."

The major general pushed the bowl towards Hachar. Hachar stared at the bowl. He, just like Saidra felt unwilling to drink the human's blood. Besides, noone liked to be used as a test subject. But he looked at Saidra's unmoving body in fear. If he refused, his fate would be no different. They were just a small unit at the corner of the outlands. Noone would hear of his death, and noone would care about his dead body that would be dumped in who knows where.

He had to gamble it. He could refuse and instantly die. Or he could accept it and probably not still die. Arianna was just a human. The incompatibility of her blood with his was negligent and insignificant. It may not necessarily lead to his death. So what if she had a few capabilities? She was still just a human. Besides, if the outcome came out good, he might be able to gain her healing capability.

With that, he took a deep breath and lifted the bowl. His eyes on it were complicated. His head was muddled with countless thoughts. He brought the bowl to his lips and took a sip.

"Nothing. I feel nothing." He said.

"Drink. Drink more." General Zord said unable to hide the uneasiness in his face.

Hachar looked at him with squinted eyes. This old fox, what was he planning? Hachar suddenly started thinking of the possibility that Arianna might be alot more bigger than he thought. He needed to test Zord. He deliberately took another small sip.

"I still don't feel anything." He said in a slightly coy voice.

"Then take a bigger gulp. There's a whole bowl of it." General Zord exaggerated in a cold voice trying to seem calm, but he didn't realize that his voice yet again trembled in unease.

Hachar was sure now. This blood might be beneficial. If he was the one who gained for being a test subject wouldn't that be good? With that in mind, he greedily took a long swig of the liquid almost downing the entire bowl.

He sat still and waited. After a second, he started feeling different. The blood felt oddly satisfying and rejuvenating. It seemed the outcome was good. He had to pretend. He had just found a good power source. If everyone here new about it, he would have to share his cake.

'Zord mustn't know. I risked my life, so I get the human.' Hachar thought shamelessly. It must be noted that just a while ago, Arianna was still just a human in his sight. Now, she was something that he got because he risked his life.

Not minding at all, Hachar kept a straight face and deliberately gave a fleeting look of confusion in his eyes.

"I still feel nothing." He said.

"It seems the human's blood is irrelevant." Someone said.

Then a quiet chatter began. General Zord raised his hand in the air.

"Wait." He gave one simple order which caused silence.

Hachar sat still. Everyone glued their eyes on him. He kept the most natural expression he could until something happened.

At the base of his abdomen, Hachar started to feel discomfort. It was like a beast had awoken inside him and was chewing away at his internal flesh. Cold sweat broke on his back.

Inside Hachar's body, his red blood cells were shrinking and crinkling at a rate too fast to be seen by the naked eye. They were all becoming dehydrated.

The water being drain out the cell was experiencing an anomaly. They were expanding quickly.

As Arianna's blood flowed through his veins, it brought with it an unprecedented pressure. In an instant Hachar's blood pressure rose to its highest.

When the blood flowed from his pulmonary vein into his heart, as every other heartbeat formation, his two auricles made to contract. But the blood was too powerful and in a bid to contract and continue the process, both auricles burst open. One could basically just imagine it as the top half of the heart bursting.

On the outside, since the entire circulation of his blood had gone awry because of his damaged auricles, Hachar was bleeding from all seven of his orifices.

The reason the blood had initially been satisfying was because it had only been to his stomach. When it got the chance to flow round his veins, it wrecked havoc.

Since the water in his body had experienced an expansion, his veins were swollen. His shrunken blood cells made his color terrifyingly pale. And in no more than ten seconds, Hachar dropped to the floor, dead. His eyes wide in fear, his face frozen with an unchanging expression of unwillingness.

The other officials saw this. This was the second dead official today and it was all because of a human. They bore deep hatred towards her.

General Zord's lips couldn't help but hook up slightly in contempt. Hachar had tried to cheat him but his outcome wasn't good.

Although many officials here thought Hachar had died because of the incompatibility of his blood with Arianna's, Zord knew why. Arianna wasn't just a human.

He smiled in his heart. He had just caught a big fish and it belonged to himself alone.
