Chapter 15 - Accident's Happen (1)

"Are you not tired yet?" Crane asked as he realize how deep in the night it currently is.

I didn't show any signs of responding, whether it be a nod or blink.

It still made me curious why I was still here, someone should be at home now trying to find where I am.

And since everyone at home knows that Morgana is the only one who frequently visit's me, I'm sure they know already that I'm at Zero's place.

So as I thought about it more, no one must be at home yet.

But the real question was, 'Where are they?'

"Are you worried?"

Crane's voice instantly pulled me back to reality.

"It's clear on how you look, though you're still a baby you must be worrying for them...it's normal, they're your family after all."

Crane glanced down towards the dark road below. "I'm sure they're on their way here by- hmm?"

Thought I have no idea what he saw, for a moment, his eyebrows twitched and a hint of irritation showed in his face.

He squinted, then after a few seconds, left me and the unconscious Morgana by ourselves.

But before he disappeared as he descent the stairs, for a moment I caught sight of a faint light and heard a short inaudible chant.

'That...That was magic...I'm sure it is....but why did he use magic here? And what kind is it?'

Without the necessary knowledge about this new found power, I was left with a sense of curiosity.

'Should I check it out?'

Rubbing my baby chin, I started heading towards the stairs without a second thought and a moment to waste.

Crawling.

Making my way downtown, crawling fast, stairs I pass, I almost fell down.

'Tototototot....I need you.'

I slapped my baby cheeks as I was distracted by a song in my past life.

It took quite a bit of time, and strength just to descend the stairs.

Unlike the stairs in my house, these one's go down a long time. It even occured to me how it was probably made to prevent the elderly from going to the balcony.

I arrived at the second floor. Darken by the night, the only light source that existed was the small flickering lights of white colored gems.

It hung on the walls, doors and even the railing of the stairs that led to the first floor.

I never got to see what kind of magic Crane used, but since I didn't passed anything in particular, I continued without a care in the world.

All the doors of each room were closed.

Then a realization waved upon me.

Everyone was now asleep, and nobody would find out if I were to do something here.

As I felt a grin appearing on my face, I glanced back and forth towards the stairs and the end of the hallway. 'Time to explore!!!'

My baby arms crawled as fast as I can, trying to open the closed doors as much as I can.

Not a single one opened. I'm probably too weak or the door was just locked tight, well, not that I care now.

'How about downstairs?'

Descending once again, for some reason, the first floor was darker than the second floor. There was nothing to light up the area even a little bit.

Still, a little darkness won't stop me from exploring.

One step at a time, and eventually, I reached the floorboard of the first floor.

'It really is dark here....how can anyone see in this kind of establishment....' I crawled forward, hoping to find something in return.

I wasn't familiar about the buildings structure, but according to my memory, if I continued going straight, I should end up in a room where kids read on their free time,

One thing I forgot often is that, not only is this place a hospital, it is also an orphanage. So there's bound to be a room used for studying here, right?

Going forward, after atleast a minute in the dark, my eyes began to adapt to my surroundings.

I could now see a room just a few more feet away with a faint flickering red light in the distance.

For a baby's eyes it was far enough that I thought I looking at the edge of a baseball field.

One, two....

One, two....

One, two...

Eventually, I reached the room lighted by a candle. It remained burning, unswayed by the wind that entered the near window.

Though it was only faint, there laid stacks of different kinds of books at the edge of the room. Lying on the floor as if it was a normal place for books to be placed on.

Without hesitating, I crawled the fastest I could. It was night and hard to read probably, but after month's of boredom, I grew tired of it and just tried my best to reach the stacks before someone stops me again.

'Books.....Books....BOO-'

Before I could scream that last word inside my head, I stopped crawling as I felt a tingle pain on both my hands.

I couldn't see it but based on how I felt the blood oozing out of my palms, I was sure I made contact on something sharp.

'They say that a baby's constitution is vulnerable to the point where the slightest injury can be deadly.'

Remembering these set of words, my attention was instantly moved from the books towards the burning candle on top of the table.

Inching my way, using my elbow to move forward, I reached the point where the light could slightly show what kind of sharp thing I was contacted to.

After all, I can't just remove it from my palms, the blood vessels might get ripped and in a worst case scenario, It could lead to scars or the wound might get infected.

I squinted my eyes as I open my palms.

'Spikes?'

Ball spikes to be accurate, one's you see that ninja's use for traps.

But that's not the important part.

'Why are there spikes here? Did someone placed them knowing someone was about to go here in the middle of the night?'

Was someone playing a prank on me? Or maybe the ball spikes were just something that was left behind by accident? But kids don't usually play with metal spikes, right?

As the questions overflowed my head, checking every single possibility, the window rattled and sent a chilling breeze inside the room. The lit candle was extinguished in an instant, removing all light on the room.

The room instantly turned colder than normal.

'I can't see again, great...now I can't read at all...'

Well, not that I can in my state. First, I should find some help to safely remove this spikes on my hands.

'Ouch....did it dug deeper than I thought?'

Without a clear look on my injury, I wasn't sure whether it just punctured my palms or pierced through them.

I just hope it's the first one.

'I should head back no-'

-BOOM!

The sound of explosion instantly disrupted my thoughts.

The next thing I knew, I woke up with my arms smudged in ash, burn marks showed all over as I opened my eyes.

The cold wind from earlier were instantly replaced with hot and drying smoke. Though the explosion came from next door, the aftershock was too powerful that my body came tumbling away to the next room.

I found myself at the corner of the stairs.

If it weren't for the wall, I would've probably flown quite a distance.

Flames erupted from the room of books, and almost half the part was destroyed in the process.

Dazed and startled.

Eyes blurring and shallow raspy breaths.

'Urghh...What....happened.'

I was about to pass out, screams can be heard all over the place as the area became covered with rubble of wood and stone.

Exhausted, there was no chance I could probably get back up.

Now that I see it, the spikes on my palms were not looking good as well. Almost each of my fingers were pierced and it stuck out of my skin on the other end.

Yet, I forced myself to crawl.

'Argh.....haa.'

My arms instantly gave out as my face made contact on the wood once again.

'Arghh....why....why is everything blurry....'

Though I already knew the answer, I asked myself just to remain conscious.

'How ironic...I died because of a fire in my last life...and now I'm about to receive the same fate.....how....funny....'

The last thread of my consciousness started to disappear.

'Can't.....go...on.'

My vision began to darken as the same feeling I hoped to never feel once again returned.

The feeling of dying.

It was silent, but for some reason, voices began to enter my ears.

"Oyy! I SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT NO ONE SHOULD GET HURT! WHAT DID I TELL YOU?!" A woman's voice, yet it sounded raspy and deep,

"I...I apologize, mistress. I didn't know there was a child near the area...."

My body was elevated in a second.

"Well....what are you waiting for, get him out of here!"

"Y-Yes. Ma'am!"

As my eyes slowly closes, a symbol entered my eyes.

A symbol of the Crescent Moon inside a rising sun.
