Chereads / Aurelius and his Cranian curse / Chapter 7 - Surprise

Chapter 7 - Surprise

The morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle glow upon the room where Aurelius had spent the night. He blinked awake, his head throbbing with a dull ache. As he stretched and rose from his slumber, he felt a strange emptiness, as if something crucial had been removed from the canvas of his memories.

He dismissed it as a mere quirk of his subconscious, attributing the dull ache in his head to exhaustion. However, as he stepped into the bathroom and the cold water washed over him, the strange sense of emptiness remained.

Before he could dwell too much on his discomfort, a knock at the door disrupted his thoughts. A Saken family worker stood outside, informing him that he was to report to the camp office immediately.

Aurelius complied, still feeling somewhat disoriented. As he entered the camp office, he found himself surrounded by familiar faces. Evelyn, Egnatius, and Cordelia stood together, their expressions a mix of anticipation and curiosity. Before them, Principal Ria greeted him with a warm smile and gestured for him to join the group of rookies.

"Aurelius," she began, her voice carrying an air of authority, "these other rookies are your family now. The Saken Clan has existed for centuries, and within our family, we possess all kinds of magic."

Aurelius listened intently; his curiosity piqued. He observed Egnatius, who stood with an air of confidence, and Cordelia, whose strength seemed beyond ordinary. Each of them possessed unique abilities that set them apart.

Principal Ria pointed to Egnatius and explained, "Egnatius uses the Precognition technique. He can slow down opponents by manipulating time, allowing him to see one second ahead and predict the enemy's moves."

Aurelius was impressed by Egnatius's abilities, realizing the tactical advantage it could offer in combat. His mind raced with possibilities, and he couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of learning such extraordinary skills.

Principal Ria then turned her attention to Cordelia. "Cordelia," she continued, "uses the Emotional Empathy Technique. She can manipulate and play with an enemy's emotions. Coupled with her superhuman strength, she has the power to crush her enemies. In the heart of the Saken Campaign Center, Principal Ria stood before the gathered rookies, her voice laden with authority as she explained the intricacies of magic techniques. Her words hung in the air, a promise of untapped potential and a world of power yet to be harnessed.

But as she delved deeper into her explanations, her senses suddenly jolted with a surge of dread and foreboding. An aura of darkness and cursed magic, unlike anything she had ever encountered before, washed over her like an oppressive tide. Fear and terror coursed through her veins, and she knew that something was terribly wrong.

In an instant, Principal Ria's gaze scanned the room, searching for the source of this malevolent energy. Her eyes widened as she spotted a figure lurking ominously behind Evelyn, who remained oblivious to the imminent danger.

Before Ria could react, the sinister presence made its move. With horrifying swiftness, it unleashed an unimaginable power, crushing Evelyn into lifeless pieces. The room erupted in shock and horror as the impossible unfolded before their eyes.

Aurelius, standing frozen in disbelief, let out a heart-wrenching scream as he witnessed Evelyn's gruesome demise. The room seemed to spin, and his world shattered in that single, horrifying moment.

Principal Ria, her senses aflame with anger and vengeance, moved to confront the malevolent figure. She was ready to strike, to exact retribution for the heinous act committed against one of their own. But before she could make a move, the figure vanished, as if melting into thin air.

In the blink of an eye, he reappeared behind Ria, delivering a devastating punch to her back that sent her hurtling through the air, crashing into a nearby building. Her formidable strength had been no match for the dark power that now loomed over them.

Egnatius and Cordelia, their faces etched with terror, attempted to confront the assailant as well. But their efforts were feeble in the face of an adversary who wielded powers beyond comprehension.

With a single word, "kaihou," the malevolent figure conjured a strange red magic orb, releasing it upon Egnatius and Cordelia. The orb bathed them in a sinister light, and as its radiance dimmed, the horrifying truth was revealed.

Egnatius and Cordelia lay on the floor, their bodies drenched in blood, their powers extinguished. Their forms, once brimming with life and potential, were now broken and shattered, victims of a power that defied understanding.

In the aftermath of the horrifying act that had left Evelyn shattered and their world in chaos, the malevolent figure known as "Surprise" fixated his eerie gaze on Aurelius. His laughter, a chilling symphony of madness, filled the air as he reveled in the terror he had sown.

Aurelius, his eyes locked onto Surprise, trembled with a potent mix of grief, anger, and fear. His voice quivered as he demanded answers amidst his tears, "Why did you kill Evelyn? Why... Why are you doing this?"

His cries echoed through the room, each word laced with the agony of witnessing the gruesome death of someone he had grown to care for. The walls seemed to close in around him, and his heart pounded with a relentless rhythm that mirrored the terror and darkness that emanated from Surprise.

Unable to contain the overwhelming surge of emotions, Aurelius lashed out, striking the floor with his fists in a futile attempt to release the anguish within him. His knuckles cracked and bled, a testament to the torment that consumed him.

Surprise, seemingly amused by Aurelius's suffering, drew closer, his laughter persisting like a haunting refrain. With an eerie grin, he introduced himself, revealing his name to be "Surprise." His voice dripped with malevolence as he addressed Aurelius's anguish, "Not gonna kill you, don't worry. I will come back. Till then, awaken your curse, Aurelius."

Aurelius's heart constricted at the mention of a curse, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and despair. The stranger's words continued to claw at his already shattered psyche. "These filthiest are lying," Surprise taunted. "You are not some Saken trash member. You belong to Cranians. I killed your whole family, haha."

With a vicious grip, Surprise seized Aurelius's hand, his fingers snapping like brittle twigs under the malevolent force. As suddenly as he had appeared, Surprise vanished, leaving behind a room filled with devastation and a young man broken in body and spirit.

With trembling limbs, Aurelius stumbled towards Evelyn's lifeless remains, his vision blurred by tears. He knelt beside her, his heartache echoing through the shattered room. But he couldn't cradle her in his arms; she lay in pieces, a cruel testament to the brutality that had befallen her.

In that heart-wrenching moment, a flood of memories surged through Aurelius's mind, from the coffee shop encounters to the stolen kisses they had shared. Amidst the pain and sorrow, a blazing fire of determination ignited within him.

Through gritted teeth, he vowed, "I will kill you, Surprise. I will make you pay."

Aurelius, now burdened with the weight of vengeance, had been thrust into a relentless pursuit, determined to uncover the truth about his past, the curse that lurked within him, and the malevolent force that had shattered his world. The path ahead was shrouded in darkness, but Aurelius was prepared to confront the shadows and unearth the secrets that would lead him to his ultimate nemesis: "Surprise."
