Maya had short brown hair that sat just above her shoulders. She wore a white long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. She looked disheveled and dirty with bags under her eyes like she's been working for hours even though it is early in the morning.
Alannah looked back at Emrys and waved for him to come closer. "Maya, meet my new friend Emrys."
Maya looked over Alannah's shoulder to see a large man wearing a pure black cloak that covered up all discerning features. To Maya, he looked like a very sketchy person and gave her a bad feeling.
She whispered to Alannah. "Hey, who is this guy? He looks like trouble."
"Alannah waved her hands in the air. "No no no, He's a really good guy trust me. He saved my life from a band of assassins. I would be dead right now if it wasn't for him." She explained.
Maya's eyes went wide in surprise. "What!? Assassins? Are you serious?
"Its a long story, I'll tell you later I promise." Alannah said.
Trying her best to recover from the shock Maya said, "Well then, what brings you to my humble shop this early in the day?"
"I know you sell a lot of different things here so we were just going to look around and see if we could find something useful and sell a few things." Alannah turned away from Maya and began looking at the various items that were placed carefully on display cases and shelves.
Emrys decided to take a look as well. He had no idea what kinds of things humans traded and became curious.
He walked up to the first shelf on his right where he saw a small pouch with straps made of leather. The few humans he had seen throughout his life always had something similar to this for carrying things around.
He had no use for such an item for he could just store things inside his body like he did with his pouch of rare seeds among other things. Moving on, the next thing he saw was a clean metal sword and shield.
It looked fresh, like it had never been used before. He couldn't tell what was so special about those items but he was able to feel a small amount of magic radiating from them.
While he was looking through different items, he felt a tap on his shoulder. "Hey, take a look at this." Alannah held out her hand that was holding a small intricate drinking glass.
Emrys took the cup from her and looked it over. Seeing that he was unable to figure it out she explained her thinking. "You see this?" She pointed to the sigil inscribed on the bottom of the cup. "This is a magic sigil that all magic items have.
"If you channel some of your magic through this sigil on the bottom then it will create water and fill the cup." After saying that she pointed her palm towards the sigil and transferred her magic into it.
Just like she said the cup filled up to the brim with clean water. Seeing this Emrys was shocked such an item existed. With this he would never need to drink from a stream or river ever again. He could just use some mana to get as much water as he wanted.
Unfortunately, he had no money and wasn't even familiar with the concept. So the first thing he did was think about what he could trade for the cup.
Of course he had various seeds and fruits stored inside his body but he doubted it would be enough. Using his telepathy he asked Alannah, "What would she want to trade for this item?"
She looked up at him. "You want to trade for it? I guess that makes sense since you probably have no money. Don't worry about it. I'll buy it for you for saving my life."
Emrys felt a warmness in his heart that seemed to push away all of the negative feelings and pain inside him.
Maya, who had been standing behind the counter this whole time, saw the two just staring at each other without saying a word and became confused.
Emrys didn't find anything else to his liking so they both went up to the counter to buy the magic cup. Alannah placed the cup on the counter.
"This? Don't you have maids for things like water and food, Alannah?" Maya said thinking she was getting this for herself.
"I do. That's why I'm buying this for him." She pointed at Emrys who was standing just behind her.
No matter how hard she tried, Maya could not see through the darkness hiding Emrys's face. She still didn't trust this guy and vowed to keep a close eye on him. She cared a lot about her close friend Alannah and would do anything to protect her.
"Very well, that'll run you three gold pieces. Items like that are hard to make you know." An annoyed look flashed across her face when she saw Alannah pull out the gold while the guy wearing dark robes did nothing.
Alannah handed over the gold and then gave the cup to Emrys with a smile.
Emrys was quite happy with this purchase. Then he wandered if had anything he could sell to get some of this gold that humans use. Communicating through Alannah would get very tiresome so he decided to reveal his telepathy to Maya since they seemed to be close friends.
Using his telepathy he asked Maya, "Do you also buy things? I may have something of value that I can part with."
Suddenly hearing this deep voice in her head stunned her for a moment before she could speak. "Was that you?" She said looking at Emrys.
"Yes, unfortunately I have to speak to you this way."
Maya was holding her head in her hands. "Wow. Just wow. I was not expecting that. Um yeah, what do you have?" She said still trying to recover from the shock.
Emrys pulled something from inside his body but to the others it looked like it was hidden inside his robe. He remembered from his little knowledge of humans that they like to make things from the parts of dead monsters and animals. Thinking about this, Emrys pulled out a small piece of rough looking wood and placed it on the counter.
Maya picked it up for a closer look. "Is this wood? One second, let me go grab something." She hurried to the back of her shop and returned a few moments later with a thick disk shaped object.
"What is that?" Alannah asked curiously.
Maya sat the object on the counter. "Its an old device I traded for a long time ago. If you place an item on top of it like this, then it will light up depending on how much magical energy it has." Then she placed the small piece of wood on the device and watched as a bright blue aura began emanating.
For a moment it became so bright that it was hard to look at. Maya quickly removed the wood so the light would disappear. "What the hell?! Just where did you get this?" She asked with her eyes wide open in surprise.
"What do you mean? Was that supposed to happen?" Asked curiously.
"I don't know how or where you got this but the magical power in this piece of wood is enough to power multiple magic items for years. Are you sure you want to sell something like this?" She explained while in deep thought.
Emrys didn't think that a piece of his own body would be so valuable. Even though he could produce a lot more he decided to keep that a secret for now. "I got this off a monster I killed while travelling."
Maya held her chin in her hand while looking closely at the wood. "I'm sorry to say I wont be able to give you the full amount for this until I get it appraised."
Emrys looked at Alannah with a question mark over his head. She noticed his confusion and nodded in return.
"That will be fine."
"Alright, this will take me just a second." With that she swept up the wood and disappeared into the back of the shop. After a few moments she returned with a small pouch of human currency.
Emrys received the pouch and opened it to see a few pieces of metal shaped into circles. Some were dirt colored, some were silver, and there was a single yellow one. Sadly he had no idea what they were worth so he had to rely on Alannah for such things for now.
He slid the pouch into his robe and stored it inside his body for safe keeping.
Having finished their business both Emrys and Alannah said their goodbyes and left the shop.
"Come back soon!" Maya called out to them.
