Chapter 13 - Chapter 13

Five years ago, the first time I heard a gunshot, it was like my soul leaving my body. It was a nightmare, and since then, I have never had a single peaceful night. I had to wear myself out and overdose on sleeping medication to fall asleep.

But last night, I did not take any medicine; it was just Nick's arms around me that made me feel peaceful. I had a good sleep after years. The irony of it all was killing me.

"Don't you dare go to him! We don't know what despicable things he could do!" William threatened me.

"I'm sorry, William! But I have to hear myself say that Nick did such a thing! If he does, I will be the one to surrender him! Trust me," I said in an earnest tone. But my voice was so weak and quiet.

William's face turned stupefied, as this was the first time I disobeyed him.

I left him and ran to the exit in a rush to check on Nick, and I gasped deeply as I caught his pleading eyes. Both of his arms were raised in surrender.

My eyes scanned for something to cause a distraction, and gladly, I caught a glimpse of the fire alarm just around the corner, which caused the system to be in a slight mess. I had just enough time to get to my motorcycle and quickly get dressed in my assassin attire.

I jumped on my motorcycle and was about to speed away from Nick when Cavin suddenly came to a halt beside me, riding a new motorcycle.

"What are you doing? Get out of my way!" I roared in irritation.

"I knew you would be like this! So I thought, I'd be your distraction while you fetch your princess! Use this motorcycle instead; you cannot be exposed, remember? Your motorcycle is registered. You might be forgetting a lot these days, so I decided to stop by and remind you that you have a very different life!" Cavin sneered.

"Fine!" I said coldly and hurriedly pushed him off the motorcycle before hopping on it and revving the engine.

I sped away at maximum speed while Cavin's laughter echoed behind me.

As I took a sharp turn outside the backyard field of the hospital, my heart raced at a frantic speed. I tried so hard to stay calm, but the anxiety was overwhelming me. Though I wanted to kill Nick with my own hands, at this moment, my heart wanted to keep him alive, and I could not think straight of causing mayhem if I lost Nick.

My hands clenched on the handlebars tightly, and my breath was ragged and heavy from the adrenaline rush, making it harder for my chest to function normally. The pain in my lungs seemed endless, but my thoughts kept racing toward saving Nick. I did not care about anything; even when the rain started pouring. I looked up and saw a thick black thundercloud looming above, and I couldn't help but grin.

The rain created a misty haze over the entire field that was almost blocking out my vision, but I didn't bother looking up and just sped up on my motorcycle, taking advantage of it to cover my tracks while I approached Nick as several armed men chased after him.

An immense anger rushed over me as I thought about how Nick ended up in this situation again. He hadn't recovered yet from last time, and now this? Thinking of him being in this situation again makes it hard to breathe. And it was annoying.

"Grab my hand!" I yelled inside my black helmet as I offered my hand to Nick. Finally,  I caught up to him, slightly slowing down so he could catch up to me.

"I DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG!" Nick pleaded at the top of his lungs, almost losing his balance in shock to see that he was caught.

"Grab my hand! I'm not one of them!" I yelled to him again, sounding hard to convince him but my voice might sound slurred and scary with my helmet on.

But knowing Nick, he rerouted and ran towards the forest, and I couldn't help but find him so stupid, that I was thinking of changing my mind and just getting over it.

I sped up to catch up once again with him, but he wouldn't stop running, so I decided to stay behind to cover up for him, taking my gun and shooting the armed men for distraction, just enough time for Nick to get to the forest.

"WOOHOO!" I heard a familiar voice, and as the rain continued to pour.

Cavin rode on a rugged motorcycle, dressed in a hospital gown, confusing all the armed men by riding like crazy around.

That shithead! He could get shot!

But I needed to keep Nick safe first.

I roared the engine of the motorcycle speeding to the forest, but the ride was taking all my time as the ground to the forest was already covered in mud.

"What a perfect timing!" I gritted my teeth in fury and decided to jump off the motorcycle. I rolled over the muddy grounds and leaped through the forest as the motorcycle crashed into the tree.

Just my luck, the rain poured more and made it harder for me to walk through the forest. And the terrain was so treacherous that I barely managed to make my way without heaving so much in exhaustion.

I grabbed my small kit inside my jacket and lit up a small flashlight, positioning it under a gun, and gladly a foot track caught my eyes, giving me hope that it could be Nick's.

With my gun in my hand, I slowly trudged forward, carefully moving along the path of the tracks. My heart was beating fast, and my head was filled with worries and fears for Nick's safety.

My breathing was rapid and shaky, but it immediately came to a halt when I saw two men dressed in patient gowns slowly trekking behind Nick. They wore masks, and they kept their guns trained on Nick's back.

Without hesitation, I turned off the flashlight and aimed my gun at the masked men, but the rain soaked my weapon and I lost control of the gun, so I had to lower it to aim properly. My heart began to beat faster, and panic started to overwhelm me. I couldn't shoot them with such poor visibility, and I was going to get killed if they somehow noticed me.

Fuck!

"I'd kill them from a closer distance if I were you!" Cavin sneaked from behind, grabbing the gun from me before rushing to the two men.

I followed and grabbed the other man while Cavin had already managed to put the other one down.

"Weak!" Cavin mocked me using sign language, infuriating me.

"You wish!" I hissed silently, almost twisting the man's neck in anger, but instead, I punched him in the stomach, kicked him down to the muddy ground, and launched another punch until he passed out. As I had disobeyed so many rules, I might as well take things lighter.

I was about to leave the body when I got a glimpse once again of the necklace from Nick's last attack.

"Go get him now! I just hope you will end things if you have proven he's guilty. I'll clean up the bodies, so go!" Cavin said, snapping my mind back to reality as I lifted my gaze to him. We were drenched in so much rain.

"I'll make it up to you!" I said before running to catch Nick.

The forest was dark and full of shadows; it was all a nightmare, with the rain making things worse. But all that mattered was getting to Nick safely and ending this bullshit.

I was running as fast as I could, trying desperately not to trip or bump into any hidden obstacles, until I made a full stop, gasping for air when I heard Nick screaming in pain.

I took a deep breath and calmed down to focus on where the scream was coming from I broke into the small clearing, and three men were surrounding him, trying to take hold of his arms and legs, but Nick kicked both of them off with such force that he sent them to the sides and fell to his knees.

I rushed to help him, grabbing one man and another then punching them, throwing them in the other direction. But the third man tackled Nick, knocking him down on the ground and punching him repeatedly on his cheeks.

"How weak can this man be? Nevertheless, everything that is happening is just making me more curious about why Nick's being a target of a mysterious group!" I said between my rapid breaths and I quickly launched a kick to stop the third man from throwing another punch on Nick.

The men whom I had thrown to the side were struggling to sit up, clutching their jaws where blood was oozing. Then they charged towards me, but I was quick to pull out my small Swiss knife and stab them to certain points in the body to disable them from moving.

I panted for air as I could not take my helmet off to protect my identity. I knelt beside Nick and picked him up off the ground, but my heart sank in despair as I saw blood gushing out from behind him.

My mind went blank in dismay and rage. I put down Nick and walked towards the three men, lost in fury. I wanted to finish them!

But I stopped when I saw men from a distance rushing in our direction. I immediately helped Nick up and pulled him behind a tree just a meter away.

"Stay silent!" I hissed in front of Nick, covering his mouth to avoid making any noise as I watched the men pick up the bodies I almost killed and rush them inside the forest.

My eyebrows furrowed with curiosity. Where are they taking them? What's in the forest?

I stood up and was about to follow when someone injected me with something in my neck, and everything went dark.

"NICK!" I gasped before going down to the ground with a muffled thud.
