Thick smoke curled around the small, dirty room, stinging my nose and eyes with each breath. It was hard to keep track of where everything was happening. I blinked hard, forcing my eyes to focus on the two figures who were battling it out in the middle of the room, each with a different weapon.
One held a gun; Cavin had a katana, which he swung repeatedly toward his opponent, causing him to take many steps back until they collided against a table. The third was trying to make his way over to them from behind while holding up what looked like a metal pipe that kept catching on the edge of the table as he tried to move through the crowd. The fourth looked like he had pulled a knife from the waistband of his pants while trying to pull himself up from the piles of rubbish destroyed from the fight, which Cavin and I had started for over an hour now. A large red symbol hung off the man's neck, but I had no idea what that symbol meant.
"Cavin! Behind you!" I yelled at him as another blast of strong punch hit my face from my opponent, making me drop down into a roll for the very first time. I just barely got my sword to swing upwards to cut the man before I could get thrown across the room.
Cavin spun around and was able to block the metal pipe that the third man was about to hit him with a swift strike using his katana before turning around again and slicing his first opponent's hand holding the gun.
"Thanks! You should worry about yourself! If I could just take a snap photo of you taking a hit just to save my life, that would be the best photo ever!" Cavin messed with me as he continued fighting without a pause, blocking blows thrown in front of him.
"Shut up! I was just following the rules! But if this thing keeps annoying me, then I'll just accept my punishment!" I screamed back before pushing myself up and hitting my opponent in the face.
We could only kill the people on our kill list, or we would suffer punishment for disobeying it.
"Suit yourself, princess! We still need to get to the boss before the sun hits the horizon!"
Outside this small room, people were blasting out music in the biggest club in the town. Some people were doing drugs, others were dancing topless, and others were still trying to get laid in the main room of the club. It was crazy to say that such a huge club even existed in the first place. This job was so satisfying; it was like cleaning up a huge junkyard.
As soon as we knocked them all out of their senses, we hurried to the rooftop, where a helicopter was sitting on its landing pad, ready to take us up into the clouds so we wouldn't have to deal with the crowds. We'd already been here for more than an hour; we had to catch up with the main boss, who had escaped while his men fought for him to give him some time.
What a loser!
The wind blew as we flew through the sky, and Cavin sat next to the pilot, looking down at the ground below.
"Where is he, Cavin?" I asked, gasping and panting heavily.
"We got him, princess!" Cavin smiled as the red dot blinked harder as we approached the highest building in town.
It didn't take long when we glided down the top of the target building and silently sneaked inside following the red dot from Cavin's tracker.
Cavin had access to the floor plan of the building and we crawled in the large air ducts before we slid down to the adjacent room of the target's room.
"The middle-aged man, with a blue handkerchief in the left pocket," Cavin whispered as we positioned to take the shot. I lowered down, with my left knee on the floor, and aimed my gun with a high-end silencer, but I was too stunned to see Ferine through the small opening of the door. She was fighting with the target man.
"What is the name of the target?" I whispered to Cavin, who was standing behind me as a lookout.
"What? Just kill him!"
Then loud knocks came from the main door, and I saw Ferine and the man turn to see as it burst open.
"Nick?" I gasped.
"Come on, Heureu! Finish fast!" Cavin gritted his teeth, dodging me a little bit.
But I was too occupied to see Nick looking so desperate as he struggled against some men in black suits, stopping him from entering the room.
My gaze returned to Ferine, who was hiding behind the man and looking terrified as if Nick might attack her.
"DAD! Get rid of him!" Ferine wailed like a crazy child.
So our target is Ferine's father! What an interesting turn of events!
"Ferine, please! Talk to me!" Nick pleaded.
"SHUT UP, Nick!" Ferine cried again, stomping hard with her left foot against the floor.
Our target stood up and fixed his coat before walking towards Nick.
"How can a Montes be this shameful? Get him out of here, dead or alive!" The man struck a punch on Nick's abdomen, knocking the wind right out of him before kicking him harshly with his shoe.
Nick fell to the ground with a thud, unable to move.
"Oh, God!" Ferine shouted as she rushed out of the room.
I felt infuriated for a moment. I didn't understand why, but something inside me was curling in rage.
"Hold this!" I handed my gun to Cavin and started stripping my protective gear off.
"What are you doing?" Cavin asked in confusion, but I ignored him as I removed the straps keeping me in my armor. My skin prickled, feeling the cool breeze against it when I took it off my shoulders.
"I am getting bored and impatient! There are too many unwanted people on the scene; I should finish this up!" I said as I fixed my hair up in a tied bun.
I was left with a loose shirt and jagged pants without all the armor before pushing open the other door out to the corridor.
I walked next door to the main office and immediately approached those men holding Nick.
"Who are you?" one man asked.
I smirked. "Do you really have to know? I am not interested in who you are, so let's just get straight to business! Only me can lay a hand on Nick!"
They were too shocked to struggle. I grasped the two guns off their hands and used the handles to hit them both over their heads and kick them to the side.
Nick fell to the floor, and I walked to the other man and grabbed him by the collar to give him a good punch. Another one tried to launch an attack but I was too quick to give a back-stroke kick. It was quick, though I am not surprised.
They were immediately knocked out of their senses. As I lifted my gaze, I saw the terror in Ferine's father. He was too lost in all that was happening.
"Who are you?" the man trembled.
I smirked and walked to Nick. "I am his nurse!"
Nick was shocked to recognize my presence. "How..."
"Your tracking device!" I said, and I launched him another punch in irritation that he looked so weak and desperate for Ferine.
How is Ferine so wanted? It pisses me off!
"I have to take my leave now. Sorry for his behavior. This won't happen again!" I gave my plea before helping Nick out of the room and leaving the man, who was too shocked to even utter a single word and was trembling while holding the phone in his hand.
"Leave the target for now, Cavin! I have some things to clarify about the organization!" I hissed on my earphones.
"But this will not be good! I can finish him now!" Cavin insisted.
"No! Tell them it was my fault! Leave now! Before you get caught!" I struggled with my voice while I carried Nick out of the building.
I hailed a taxi and took Nick to the hospital.
I called William on our way to prepare a room.
It was past midnight, and I couldn't help but notice Nick's wounds and bruises everywhere.
The taxi stopped at the front of the hospital, and the driver helped me carry Nick inside.
As soon as we entered the premises of the hospital, William grabbed Nick's other arm from me and helped him straight to the room. I stayed out for a while to pay for the taxi and ran back to the room, but I stopped outside the room when I saw Mr. Ben slap Nick hard on the face.
"Don't ever put my name to shame again!" Mr. Ben was infuriated.
Nick wickedly grinned and sighed, "I was not your son four years ago! Right?"
Every word was full of pain.
"I have no choice!" Mr. Ben turned around and saw me.
He walked away from Nick and slammed the door shut behind him before pulling out a small folder from his coat.
"I need you to help Nick get into a university, or people will know about your father's organization!"
A cold rush traveled throughout my body; I felt the soles of my feet freezing.
He knew?
