Chapter 18 - 17. Save yourself first

Zena walked back to the conference room and saw the person she was looking for sitting at the large table.

"You came back, I wasn't sure you were going to," the woman said with a straight face.

"Who are you and why did you help me?"

"So I guess you really do not remember who I am then?" She asked. "You really lost your memories?"

Zena tilted her head as she watched the woman. "Yes, or more like I am not the woman you know to be Xian."

She nodded again. "I thought as much, people lose their memories, not their personalities. I don't know how anyone with two eyes couldn't tell, but you act and talk nothing like Xian. What's your name?"

Zena's eyes widened. "You believe me?"

She let out a soft sigh and picked up her folder. "I do not know what I believe. But I am being open-minded here. What do you believe your name is?"

Zena shook her head. "Never mind if you don't really think that I am not her, you can just call me Xian."

"Very well then. My name is Susan, Susan Ting."

"And how are you related to me?"

"I am your spy, the one you planted within the Ming and co, law firm to keep an eye on the Zhen family legal business."

Zena's brow rose in surprise. "I hired a spy?"

"No, you found a hardworking lawyer in a bad situation and put her in a worse situation by blackmailing my family unless I help you. So now I got a job there by your connections, of course, and I am spying on the family for you without compensation."

Zena's lips parted and for a moment she did not know what to say. "If I am that nasty, then why did you help me today? You should have revelled in my destruction, proven your theory that I am mad and had them take me to an asylum. Why save me?"

Susan walked to Zena and stopped a few steps away from her. Both women look at each other in the empty silent room. "Because I have empathy. And because you are just that good at manipulating people, so it's on me."

"I don't understand what you are talking about."

"Well, you shouldn't be having this conversation with me," Susan said stepping forward and Zena sprung into action by intercepting her.

"Who am I supposed to be having it with then? No one will tell me anything."

"Talk to Molly, she is the reason I helped you in the first place."

Zena shook her head. "Molly, my nurse?"

"Yes, Molly, your nurse, except she isn't really a nurse and also, I will take this opportunity to quit. I have come to love my job at Ming and Co so I refuse to continue to jeopardize it. Even though you got it for me I have done enough, this should be enough to set me free right?"

Zena nodded. "Of course."

Susan hummed softly as she pulled a sheet of paper out of her purse. "I am sorry to have to do this but I am going to need you to sign on that."

"What?"

"It's just that I don't know how long you are going to be a different person and I would like this conversation to hold water even after you go back to full evil witch mode."

Zena took the pen and shook her head as she signed. "Was I really that bad?"

"Yes, you were."

"Well, I do know in detail as I am apologizing for but please believe that it is honest and I am sorry."

"Thank you for doing that," she said as she walked out of the room. Pausing by the door she turned around. "You should know if you are going to pretend to still be Xian, the last thing she would ever do is apologize."

"So what do I do to the people she has hurt?"

"You save yourself first, after all, you didn't hurt them."

"Will I be seeing you again?"

Susan shrugged. " I would like to say hopefully not but as far as I work where I work we will probably see again but it would be for the best that this be our last interaction. Can I count on you for that?"

Zena swallowed. "Fine, you deserve to save yourself as well."

"Goodbye, Mrs. Zhen."

***

Zena's mind was abuzz with thoughts as she walked to her room. She shouldn't have allowed Susan just walk away, but she didn't have the heart to demand more from her after what Xian had done.

"But really, why am I feeling bad? She was right, I am not the one that did all of those horrible things. Why do I have to feel so remorseful?"

"I just need to get Xian out of this body for good since she doesn't want to help. I can start a new life after that. Or go back?" She deliberated. "But how do I do that? Do I even have a life to go back to?"

"Miss Xian! We have been waiting for you."

Zena's head snapped up at the sudden call. She saw an incredibly attractive man with hair that even women would envy, giving her a sly smirk.

"We?"

"Me and your assistant Molly." He added as another woman came into view. He had his hand around her shoulders, and from Molly's expression, it was clear they were not close enough for such.

He extended his hands to her immediately after she reached the room.

"Hello, I'm your new psychiatrist, you can call me Logan." He said with a wide smile.

Zena was a heavy introvert. She didn't like to be anywhere but her house and she considered this current situation hell because she had to keep interacting with people she didn't even know to save herself.

So she knew why she immediately disliked this Doctor, despite his good looks, mischievous grin and boyish charm. He had extrovert plastered all over his forehead and it was obvious he was going to be incredibly chatty.

'Damn it.' She cursed in her head. She wasn't too distracted by him, however, that she didn't notice her sudden assistant. An assistant that pretended to be someone else.

"Xian, nice to meet you." She said, returning his handshake. Her head tilted to the right to get a better view of this assistant. "Molly."

She stated bluntly, waiting to gauge her response and try to figure out what their relationship was like.

"Hello, Mrs Zhen." It's an official one then. "How are you doing?"

Zena's eyes narrowed. She had to immediately catch herself before she said something mean.

"I'm better I guess."

Molly glanced behind her, swallowed and spoke again. "How was the meeting? Did you finalize the divorce?"

'She's either scared or anxious about Xian. But she is not so uncomfortable that she can't ask me personal questions. Is she like a manager? Or...'

Logan's ears perked at the question and he stared holes into her, waiting for her response.

"No, we decided to work on our differences and try to save the marriage for the sake of our sons."

Molly's expression was definitely entertaining for Zena.

"Seriously?" she gasped. "But all you've ever wanted was to divorce President Zhen."

Zena shrugged. "I changed my mind."

"But-" Molly began when Zena interrupted her to face Logan.

"Do I have an appointment right now or is it just..." she trailed off and Logan cleared his throat.

"Unless you are not too tired, I would like to have a session. Chairman Zhen is very interested in your second diagnosis." He stated, unable to tell how she felt about it because she lowered her head.

Zena was wondering if she should have the session before talking to Molly, but she decided it would be best if she spoke to someone that knew Xian closely before she went to try and deceive a professional.

"Actually, that meeting wiped me out. Can we have it later?" She asked. "I just get really tired these days. What do you say?"

"Anything for you, Miss Xian." He grinned and Zena's brows furrowed. She didn't know what it was about this guy that just made her feel annoyed. Was it in her head or was he purposely trying to flirt?

"It's Mrs Zhen to you sir, if you would excuse me." She said bluntly as she walked into her room.
