The wood sprite had a great affinity with the land and fell over immediately. It was as though the poor thing had been poisoned. I found that if I walked in a certain direction, the sprite regained health, but in the opposite direction it got worse.

Every step closer made the little sprite suffer more. It fell over dead just as I found the source of the blight. The magical link between the sprite and the land was fascinating to behold.

The infection all came from a single tree in the center of a small forest of rotted vegetation. It was obviously not natural, but it was also not readily apparent as to why this tree was spreading disease across the land.
It wasn't too difficult to find an axe, but I realized that I was in trouble the instant my axe struck the tree. The blade flew through the trunk with no resistance, causing the tree to splash into a green, viscous goo. The sickening slop got all over my hands and onto the ground. I became very sick and nauseous.
